“Good Boutique Base for Easter Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

The best features of the hotel are the open lounge areas with sweeping seascapes. This is where you can relax and it is also the area where the hotel serves breakfast and dinner, so you are assured some happy memories and good views! The pool is small, could be larger given the size of the grounds. It was really nice to have a pool to come back to after a day out exploring. Staff are friendly and given the very relaxed vibe (this is Polynesia after all) service is friendly and efficient. The rooms are in individual cabins. We were quite far up the hill to ensure our own sea view (room 16). There is a sense of space and tasteful minimalist design inside the cabins and the extra day bed was a nice touch.

As outlined in some other reviews, the main drawback of the hotel is that rooms are not designed for the climate. They are too hot. Heat builds up during the day and you have to choose between open windows and stray bugs at night or a very hot room. We stayed for 6 nights. With some experimentation, we found that if we ensured that all fans were turned off after the room was cleaned in the morning (staff left them whirring all day) and we left all windows open during the day, then closed up at dusk, the room was cooler.

Food at the restaurant was well prepared, especially the local seafood. It was very expensive, same price as eating in an excellent restaurant in Santiago. The hotel is remote enough to make getting into Hanga Roa a little difficult (after dark). It's a good 40 minute walk one way.

Overall though, I think most visitors to Rapa Nui will want to spend a lot of time outdoors, exploring the statues and the other archaeological sites and maybe even diving, surfing or horse
riding. The Altiplanico serves as a good base for these activities. The best comparison would probably be with French Polynesia, rather than South America and there hotels usually offer poorer value for money and more erratic service. Given the remote location I was pleasantly surprised.

Room Tip: Rooms 14, 15 and 16 had distant sea views. Ask when booking for a sea view (no extra cost) as some c...

Cabin style accommodations have a separate bathroom with a large shower. The rooms do not have screens, but in October flying insects are not a problem. Crawling insects are able to enter however, so watch where you step. Rooms are large, but rustic without carpeting telephones, or TV. WIFI is available in the hotel lobby area. The hotel staff is very friendly and is fluent in English. Food at the hotel is very good and priced at Easter Island levels. It is a quiet hotel about 1.5 miles out of town. Cab rides can be arranged for about $5USD each way. We arranged a four day private guided tour through iChileTravel.com. The English speaking guide picked us up daily and provided an excellent tour. The tour package was about ½ the cost of a similar A&K arranged trip.

The location and sunset are beautiful as are the Pisco Sour cocktails. Unfortunately the hotel is let down badly by the quality of the accommodation - no aircon, damaged floors, no in room facilities or even mosquito screens. The restaurant is expensive with limited choices and poor quality on all but local dishes. Breakfast is also very hit or miss.
This could be a lovely experience if only they would choose to address the various issues that have been mentioned here for the last few years...

I knew ahead of time that there was no AC, but I didn't expect a screenless patio door; I could not leave the sliding door open to get some air at night. Not much sleep, even with the fans.

However, I didn't go there for the room, so I have to compliment the hotel on the good food, pleasant people, and helpfulness when our return flight was delayed seven hours. Sitting in the lovely lobby certainly beat the airport, and we were even offered a day room, but the lobby was open air, so we preferred that.

Roads on the island are not very good, and due to recent rains, getting to the hotel was rather difficult. It also meant that we decided not to walk to town through all of the mud. However, taxis were plentiful and fairly cheap, since most everything else on the island is very expensive.

Buy or bring your own bottled water if you need it, and also bring snacks if you want those. We are gluten free and had planned to buy some rice cakes at the local store, but after visiting at least four, we found out that they had sold out, and none would be available until the next shipment arrived.

Keep in mind that this is an isolated island and enjoy the positives that the gracious people offer.

We arrived here before dawn and were a little worried about where we were. The property was described as being a 15 minute walk to town. Did not really feel that way, and it's really not that close. However, it turned out to be just the kind of location we were looking for - removed, tranquil, lovely grounds and great views of the sea. We really enjoyed staying here. It was far from full, so that added some nice extra peacefulness. Our "cabana" had plenty of room, a patio with a view (great place to read) and the bathroom was roomy, with a good shower. The grounds are very well kept. This is not luxury, but very good basic accomadations - pretty much what we expected. The open-air lounge area is very nice, as is the small dining area. The dinner menu is very limited and expensive, but the food was well prepared. They try with breakfast choices on the open buffet and will fix eggs to order, but again not luxe and buffet choices dwindled as the stay went on. Birds also landed on the buffet table and were helping themselves to the tarts. Yikes! The walk along the shore from the hotel to town is fabulous. Pretty easy terrain, historic sites along the way and the ocean at your side. It's about 30-40 minutes, depending on the pace you choose. Overall, I think this is a good place to call base, if you do not want right in the middle of the "action" in town. Also, I want to say that we had a big delay on LAN Chile with our departing flight, which meant another overnight. The hotel manager was very understanding and helped by calling the airling several times and no hassle about charging us for our dinner or room (fortunately they were not booked solid!) Nice to know there's help, if needed.

When I paid $350 USD for a room it never occurred to me that it didn't have air conditioning. Certainly my bad for not verifying.... BUT REALLY??? The room design did not allow for air flow, which made the room about 20 degrees warmer than it was outside in the evening. The only possible option is to open the doors, but when doing so you are completely exposed. After the first completely sleepless night, I took this option for my remaining nights.

Nice qualities of the room
-The bed was comfortable
-The shower is quite special with an outdoor shower feel
-Design was appealing
-Room was very clean and spacious

Other Rants on the room.
-No refrigerator
-No bottled water
-Ceiling fan did not seem to move the air
-Portable fan was very noisy

Internet was free but not available in the room
The staff were quite nice.
Breakfast was quite good. It wasn't clear to me you could order eggs cooked to order until my last morning, but the choices were satisfying.
The lunches and dinners were hit and miss. Warning, do not order the pizza! Stick with the dishes you would expect them to do well on. Fish, ceviche, etc...

Yes, there are no TV, no refrigerator, no phone, no...all what some want in an standard hotel room like Hyatt, Sheraton,...
But are you in Easter Island to stay in the room regarding TV ???...
Rooms are huge, and in ours we had 2 showers, one classic and one with sky for ceiling and taking a shower under the stars or at sunrise is incredible.
There is no A/C, but if you think to down the stores, to open the windows in both room and bathroom, so the room is relatively fresh when you come back after visit...
Service was of top quality : maracuja juice of welcome, find the proragmm of the festival, find us a local guide speaking french...All was done quickly and perfectly...
Breakfast are excellent with 3 choices of pies, some cakes, fresh fruits and fresh fruit salad,
cereals, ham, cheese,...
The only point to discuss is the breakfast dining room without charm...
Open it on the garden like the dining room and it will be perfect(We ask to eat in this dining room on morning and it has not been a problem...)
Finally, no wifi in room : you have better options to do than navigate on internet in your room in this tropical atmosphere : a drink in your private terrasse with tropical plants is one...

Room Tip: All seem perfect...
