“Fascinating!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Our family of four stayed in the 3 bedroom house for 4 nights in April 2012. We knew we would enjoy seeing the Moai, but had no idea how fascinating the rest of the island and it's history would be! Paul was an incredible guide and brought both the ancient and more recent history to life by sharing his personal stories. He could make a talk about plant life interesting to an 8-year-old boy! Our house, attached to the hotel, was quiet and comfortable, with a well-stocked kitchen. We used Paul's truck one day and rented a car another. Overall, a fantastic stay!

We stayed at Tekarera Inn for 4 nights. We had a nice stay - the place was comfortable, clean, had everything we needed. What made it all worthwhile though were Paul's very informative tours (as others have mentioned). Paul worked as a part of an archaeological team with William Mulloy when he was only 16 years old, and I believe he moved back to the island in 1998. His passion for Easter Island is evident in his detailed knowledge of all the sites. Paul has lived an adventure filled life, and has fascinating stories to share as well. We also appreciated that Paul treated us like family. He was warm, genuine and made sure we got the most out of our visit.

PROS
- Paul's tours! you probably won't find a better guide elsewhere
- Plenty of hot water and good water pressure
- Spacious room
- Nice clean bathroom
- A 5-10 minute stroll to the Tahai site, which is nice for sunset (if you are lucky enough for clear skies)
- There is a mini fridge in the room
- Breakfast is decent... bread, cheese, fruit, jam, cereal
- Nice views off the deck area
- Paul asked us throughout our stay if we needed anything else in our room

CONS
- Tekarera Inn (by the museum) is a little far from the town area. We probably made the walk once or twice (felt like at least 20 minutes). The rest of the time we took a taxi ($4). Your legs may be tired from walking around sites the rest of the day, so keep that in mind.
- Can get a little chilly in the night (no heater in the room)

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
- Email communication with Paul was up and down. There were some times when he'd reply quickly and other times where I'd send 2 or 3 emails with no response and I'd have to call him to check in with him. Not a huge issue, but just took a bit more time and effort.
- Property is still being worked on and seems like there are 1 or 2 more rooms to finish.
- We rented his automatic truck for a day (I don't know how to drive manual cars). It is gas guzzler! We used about a 1/4 tank and when we filled it up it cost about $50. Paul had made 1 or 2 airport runs that same day and was nice enough to give us back $10 gas money for those. The truck is also a little large, while other rental vehicles seemed to be smaller, newer jeeps. It was a convenient option, but if I had a chance to re-plan things I would probably opt to see what automatic vehicles the rental companies had (which i know is limited).

Staying with you on Easter Island was a great experience. Your guided tours
helped us to understand what we were seeing and were a good way to start our
visit because then we knew what we were looking at on the following days.
We really enjoyed staying in the house and the breakfasts kept us going all
day. It was really nice having dinner with you that one night. You are a
great host!

It took us a long time to finally get to Easter Island but was so worth the
effort!

My girlfriend and I had stayed only one night at Paul's place. We had only two days to see the island so we decided to book a tour with him to get the most out of our time.

Pauls knowledge is exceptional. I think you would have a hard time finding another guide with his knowledge. He took us to different spots by car and we walked a little bit at each site. He even showed us around town and recommended us good restaurants.

As our flight was 8 hours late we could stay an additional night at his place (LAN Airlines paid for it). To get everything organized Paul drove me twice to the airport that evening and than he had to get up in the middle of the night to drive us to the airport again to catch the flight.

All in all I agree with most of the other recommendations and you can do much wrong if you book with Paul.

Just finished a three night stay with Paul at Tekarera and would highly recommend both his lovely hotel, and the excellent and fascinating tours he provides. The hotel, which is really more of a large house, is extremely comfortable offering clean, sumptuous rooms and a fantastic view from the terrace out over the ocean. What makes the stay special however is the warm hospitality Paul extends to the guests, starting from the early morning greeting at the airport all the way through to your departure; he really went out of his way to make our stay as good as possible. As well as being a great host, Paul, with an encyclopaedia like knowledge of the island, makes a fantastic guide, and really helped us get to know what is without doubt one of the most beautiful and interesting places we have visited to date. We had a fantasic time - for a really special and individual experience, Paul and Tekarera come highly recommended.

It was our first travel to Easter Island and an amazing surprise: a wonderful and cozy house at Tekarera to stay with my family and a terrific guide to help us to discover the hidden mysteries of this unique place on earth. Paul was more than just a guide for me and my wife and kids. He was the perfect host to show each detail of the island, starting on Hanga Roa village, then on Orongo site and Rano Kau volcano, and more. Each location presented by Paul is a part of his personal history on this place where he helped to restore several archaeological sites. The moais were the main piece of the whole story of Rapa Nui people, a very important message to anyone who might know what happened with them on a past not so far .

I strongly recommend anyone who wishes to know the Easter Island in a first travel to stay on Tekarera with Paul and have the unique experience of his guidance along all the historical sites.

We'd been looking forward to a trip to Easter Island but staying here was the best thing we did. Paul provided superb accommodation. Even better, if possible, were the tours he gave us of the island. His knowledge of the archaeology was fantastic and, coming from personal experience, it made everything much more real for us. We'd been anticipating seeing and finding out a bit about the Moai, but weren't expecting to learn much about other aspects of the island. What Paul told us about the flora and fauna and the more recent history was as fascinating as everything else. Friends back in the UK are being constantly told another story from our visit here. If you are going to Easter Island, do try and stay here - I can't imagine a better place or person to be with. There's a choice of hotel and self catering accommodation (self catering includes a big breakfast).
