“Nice accomodation and very good tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

My girlfriend and I had stayed only one night at Paul's place. We had only two days to see the island so we decided to book a tour with him to get the most out of our time.

Pauls knowledge is exceptional. I think you would have a hard time finding another guide with his knowledge. He took us to different spots by car and we walked a little bit at each site. He even showed us around town and recommended us good restaurants.

As our flight was 8 hours late we could stay an additional night at his place (LAN Airlines paid for it). To get everything organized Paul drove me twice to the airport that evening and than he had to get up in the middle of the night to drive us to the airport again to catch the flight.

All in all I agree with most of the other recommendations and you can do much wrong if you book with Paul.

Just finished a three night stay with Paul at Tekarera and would highly recommend both his lovely hotel, and the excellent and fascinating tours he provides. The hotel, which is really more of a large house, is extremely comfortable offering clean, sumptuous rooms and a fantastic view from the terrace out over the ocean. What makes the stay special however is the warm hospitality Paul extends to the guests, starting from the early morning greeting at the airport all the way through to your departure; he really went out of his way to make our stay as good as possible. As well as being a great host, Paul, with an encyclopaedia like knowledge of the island, makes a fantastic guide, and really helped us get to know what is without doubt one of the most beautiful and interesting places we have visited to date. We had a fantasic time - for a really special and individual experience, Paul and Tekarera come highly recommended.

It was our first travel to Easter Island and an amazing surprise: a wonderful and cozy house at Tekarera to stay with my family and a terrific guide to help us to discover the hidden mysteries of this unique place on earth. Paul was more than just a guide for me and my wife and kids. He was the perfect host to show each detail of the island, starting on Hanga Roa village, then on Orongo site and Rano Kau volcano, and more. Each location presented by Paul is a part of his personal history on this place where he helped to restore several archaeological sites. The moais were the main piece of the whole story of Rapa Nui people, a very important message to anyone who might know what happened with them on a past not so far .

I strongly recommend anyone who wishes to know the Easter Island in a first travel to stay on Tekarera with Paul and have the unique experience of his guidance along all the historical sites.

We'd been looking forward to a trip to Easter Island but staying here was the best thing we did. Paul provided superb accommodation. Even better, if possible, were the tours he gave us of the island. His knowledge of the archaeology was fantastic and, coming from personal experience, it made everything much more real for us. We'd been anticipating seeing and finding out a bit about the Moai, but weren't expecting to learn much about other aspects of the island. What Paul told us about the flora and fauna and the more recent history was as fascinating as everything else. Friends back in the UK are being constantly told another story from our visit here. If you are going to Easter Island, do try and stay here - I can't imagine a better place or person to be with. There's a choice of hotel and self catering accommodation (self catering includes a big breakfast).

I spent 5 days/4 nights on the island at Tekarera with one of the packages offered (room, tour and car rental). Paul was quick to respond to emails and queries and I liked his history with the island, feeling that I would be in good hands. The location is a bit out of the center of town (15-20) minute walk or quick (cheap) cab ride. It is situated on the same road as the museum and 10 mins to the Moai and the sunset (i could have stayed here every night watching the sun set with the Moai). Paul met me at the airport and once at the property where his two dogs welcomed us - i was given the room at the end of the hall - the inside is brand new furniture, fixtures and bathroom. As Paul runs the place with little help as others have said, he is very attentive to your needs especially as i have a dairy allergy and he was kind to work around this as daily breakfast is yogurt, cereal, milk, cheese, meats, bread, juice, coffee. He also sells bottled water much cheaper than town so this was great since i drink a few bottles a day.

The tours were two 1/2 days that i joined a couple on and they were so informative and you can see how much Paul cares about the island, its history and its future.

The car rental was a manual car that was easy to use and the dirt roads on the islands were definitely challenging on the tours -be prepared for bumps, bring good hiking/sneakers and water.
There are seating areas outside of the rooms which were nice to read a book and relax and surprisingly there was free wi-fi (it is pretty good and available about 80% of the time -given that i can't often get internet signal in my big city, getting one on this remote island was ironic).

Bring a flashlight with you (to walk at night or climb in caves) - paul lent me his as I had forgotten mine. He provides adapters in the room as well.

One night, our spanish didn't quite get us a taxi at the house, we called Paul to order for us and he showed up instead to take us to town to dinner (he was off property with a friend at the time on his only night off!) - it was this type of attention that made this a special visit.

Paul has his own history that makes the visit even more interesting.

During my stay, the only thing missing was a clock in the room (he may have these now) as the time seemed to be a problem for me in Santiago and Easter Island as both my blackberry and Ipod were wrong - ask Paul when you get there what time it is so you can fix your devices and not miss the sunrise like I did!

A group of us spent an incredible four days on Easter Island in April and i must honestly say it ranks among one of the best trips i've had! And a large part of that had to be attributed to the wonderful Paul who runs Tekarera!

Paul's hospitality was amazing and his local knowledge of the island and its history was out of this world. His anecdotes and personal experiences made for joyful learning, definitely not something you would get from tour guides who give run-of-the-mill lonely planet explanations... :) I do not want to give spoilers haha but do ask Paul about his adventure @ Orongo with the "hidden basement"... :P

Two thumbs up for Paul and Tekarera~!

We stayed 4 days at Tekarera Inn in early May this year, and had a wonderful time in Easter Island, thanks largely to Paul and his amazing hospitality. We were a group of 8, and Paul moved us to the attached house at no extra cost. It was perfect for us, with 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, and the best part - a terrace overlooking Ahu Tahai and the coast, where we hung out over breakfast, tea, supper, and just watching the stars at night. Cleanliness and comfort was never an issue, breakfast (hand-sized empanadas one morning!) was always waiting for us on the terrace, and there was always juice, coffee/ tea and cereals in the house.

We were amazed that Paul does everything on his own, apart from some help from one of the locals with the cooking and cleaning of the place. When the living room sofa developed a tilt, Paul got down on his hands and knees to look at it. When one of the toilets got choked (from our own mismanagement I'm afraid), Paul disappeared inside and told us it was fixed 5 mins later. He really does go the extra mile and all the way down the road, recommending us great places to eat, driving us around for whole days, and having the flexibility to include sights that we wanted to see. And the great thing is that Paul lives on the property, on the other side of the wall infact, so he would drop in on us to check that everything was alright, with his arrival always heralded by his 2 dogs. We didn't feel like we were tourists in an inn; we felt like we were staying with a friend on summer vacation.

And of course, his knowledge of the island is astounding. Having been involved in restoration of the ahus since as early as 1968, his history is intertwined with the island's. It's not the standard tourist spiel he delivers; almost every site has some sort of personal significance to him, from his youth adventures in Orongo to the sites he has worked on restoring. On our 3 days touring the island with him, Paul was our driver/ tour guide/ story-teller, all delivered in his amusing, charming Wyoming manner. Someone should persuade him to write a book one day.

One day, Paul stopped us by the beach and took us down to a tiny hidden cave. We went inside and there was this other group of tourists from one of the expensive hotels on the island, sitting in foldable chairs and being served lunch. Despite the fancy setup, wine and all, they were pretty much left to chew on their food in silence. Paul took us outside and quietly explained that this was where his wife used to live back when she was a child, and the entire scene just took on a terrible poignancy. It was moments like this that made us appreciate what the island means to the people who have known it thru the years.

Another day, he simply stopped to pick guavas off the trees by the road, amidst one of his stories of the rise and fall of generations of shrubbery. And that night we just fed on a bumper crop of mangos and guavas that we picked from the trees in Paul's yard. They were the best we had tasted!

Well, I could really go on.. But if you want to experience island life with all its history and mystery, there is really no other place and person to go to. And it's comforting to know that Tekarera Inn is part of Paul's greater vision to preserve the island that he remembers, including restoration and a sustainable initiative for the islanders to get involved in sharing their culture; his own way of giving back to the Island, and making sure that its culture and legacy live on.

Stay here and experience it for yourself, and you might just be inspired too.
