“Beautiful retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

Visited here a few years ago. The staff were sincere and friendly. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxing. Enjoyed a hot stone massage which may have been the best massage I have had. The location is very isolated and the drive there from Tabacon was rough but it was worth it to disconnect. Bring a good book and enjoy the serenity.

Gracias! It is always a pleasure to hear back from our former guests. Thank you so much for remembering us so fondly. I certainly hope you have a chance to visit us again soon. Since your stay, we have completed many exciting projects including a brand-new eco-adventure park, Private Two-Bedroom Villas, and an expanded selection of farm-to-table cuisine, cultural experiences, and spa services. Warmest regards from all the staff!

After a long day of travel our group arrived at El Silencio Lodge late afternoon on the 28th January, 2014. We were welcomed by several members of the staff who were very friendly and accommodating. We were given an overview of the property and shown to our beautifully appointed cottages. As we all settled into our rooms we were brought hot chocolate (your choice of coffee, hot chocolate or tea is offered complimentary from 3pm-5pm daily) which is a nice amenity for you to enjoy either in your room or on the beautiful deck overlooking the mountains and cloud forest. The lodge offers breathtaking views of the mountain ranges and cloud forest from your deck. One of the most peaceful and tranquil places I have had the pleasure of visiting. The following day we experienced a mystic hike through the cloud forest in morning and a Costa Rican coffee tasting in the afternoon. Benny our concierge and guide was very knowledgeable about the area. His passion for conserving the environment was evident in his love of his surrounding and preservation of the cloud forest. The next day we awoke early for bird watching and another hike. Again Benny escorted us on this hike and was fantastic. I have never been interested in bird watching but have a new found respect for it because of Benny's expertise. The food during our stay was excellent, A special dinner was arranged ( for an additional charge) on a viewing platform. What a treat!!!
The spa is also excellent everyone in the group had at least one spa treatment and everyone agreed it was outstanding.
Overall El Silencio Lodge was one of the best experiences I have had in quite a while. Being a luxury travel advisor I will always recommend this resort to my clients traveling in Costa Rica.
Thank you El Silencio for creating a wonderful experience for my small group of friends and family.

We found the El Silencio Lodge from the warm welcome from the staff through the quality of the rooms just wonderful. A very special "must see" place. The own veranda with the view to the forrest is just taking you to another planet. - The planet of silence. But still, everything is there you can expect from a hotel of this category. Best quality, skilled and very friendly people. Congratulations to the management for this special place in the forrest.

Room Tip: All the rooms are in a extraordinary standard.

We just returned from a week-long vacation in Costa Rica, with our first three nights being at El Silencio. This place is absolutely amazing, it set the bar very high for the rest of our trip. We love smaller, more intimate hotels and this place fit the bill perfectly. We are big time outdoors people and we hiked all over the property and were amazed by the beauty of the forest and the three waterfalls on the property were breath taking. This is not the place to go if you are looking for a pool party. This IS the place to go if you are looking for a peacefull retreat with five star accomodations, food and spa. We visited the spa twice for massages which were top notch. Food was incredible and staff couldn't have been more accomodating and friendly. I absolutely cannot say enough about our experience here (which says a lot because I can be very picky) and have already recommended it to a friend.

We were there until January 16, for a two night stay.
The drive to the lodge is breathtaking.....in both beauty and in the hairpin turns we drove in the mountains.
The greeting by staff was warm, friendly, and helpful. The room and site are in a remote area, like a private oasis. The air temperature was cool, but the outdoor jacuzzi was warm.

We did the three waterfall tour, and I used the spa services and attended the cooking class.
All were excellent.

We had come from Lapa Rios, so it was nice to be in the fresh cool mountain air.
We had sunshine, great food, and excellent guided hikes.
I recommend it highly. All the staff is excellent. They are putting the finishing touches on their zip line, and it looks like fun.

What would I change? I would stay three nights. Also, I would take layers of clothes, as the temperature varies during the day.

What will I remember? The guided hike and the picking and preparing our own produce with the chef at the on site gardens.

Well done. Thank you.

One and a half hours drive North of the international airport by car or taxi (125 USD single trip) and you arrive (after some 2 km dirt road and asking for directions) in the middle of the rainforest. After days of sunshine it was pouring down when we arrived. Already at arrival we were disappointed. Not only because everything was very humid and cold but also due to the lack of internet in the villa’s. You have to walk/hike quite a distance in the rain/darkness to the restaurant area to get online. We appreciate that the rooms have no TV but we are not sure if every one does. The 16 villa’s are gorgeous. Big balcony with wooden, leather chairs, wooden floors, extreme comfortable king size bed, lots of light due to the huge windows, good size fridge, tea/coffee facilities, two comfortable day beds (children could sleep here), separate toilet and shower and outside a two person Jacuzzi. The only disadvantage; is that it takes 2 hours (of power) to heat the tub. Staff is very friendly and willing to do their utmost to make you comfortable. Breakfast includes fresh juice, granola with yoghurt/fruit and a choice of eggs or another local dish. Dinner in the restaurant is ok but not very special or cosy. It was a very cold place (the gas heating is not sufficient to provide a comfortable setting in case of heavy rain). One night the food was good, the other night the pasta was much to salty. The staff did not reacted on our complaint. Why do we only give two ‘stars’? The reason is the price/quality. We paid nearly 400 euro for two nights (breakfast and 1 nice hike to the waterfalls included). Let us emphasise that El Silencio is not to blame for bad weather. They, however, should be able to provide guests with a comfortable feeling if the weather is not as good. In the villa (with two heaters on) we felt comfortable but there was no Internet connection. With two days of pouring/stormy rain it’s nice to spend a few hours ‘connected to the world’. This is however only possible in the main facility. There, again, it was ice cold and windy (due to open doors) Because of the wet weather the staff was not able to light the wood burning stoves. They even tried with electric heaters but also without success. There is also no gym so (again in such a bad weather) not else to do than sit in the apartment and read. We had so much looked forward to stay in El Silencio (we specially flew to Costa Rica for staying here) but were so disappointed. We were pleased that we could depart despite all the positive aspects of this place which are definitely also there…..!

Thank you for providing us feedback about your experience at El Silencio Lodge & Spa. I am saddened to learn that your stay did not fulfill the high expectations that we normally surpass thanks to our outstanding facilities and our staff's superb service. I regret that your stay coincided with a period of intense weather since this fully impacted your experience. I also regret that much of your disappointment stemmed from a misunderstanding about your lodging unit. We offer two types of accommodations, Suites and 2 Bedroom Villas. The unit you describe is a Suite, a spacious king-bed + 2 single day beds accommodation. Suites, however, do not feature WiFi or TV sets. The Two Bedroom Villas do offer both services. I will review our web content and reservation material to ensure that this information is further highlighted. If possible, please write to me at: outreach@grupoislita.com I would sincerely appreciate chatting with you in order to learn as much as possible from your experience. We are always eager to learn from any mistakes or shortcomings. I thank you once again for taking the time to express your thoughts and for having selected Costa Rica as your travel destination. Our best wishes for a wonderful 2014!

El Silencio is a perfect way to start your trip. It's in a remote location - it took about two hours from San Jose. The property is beautiful - the resort is surrounded by forests and the resort is very eco-friendly. We stayed there two nights before moving on to the coast. This was perfect, as the lodge is a place where busy people can completely unwind. The rooms are private bungalows. Larger villas are available for those who need more space. Our room was clean and so quiet, with a king size bed, large bathroom, porch space and outside jacuzzi. there are no tvs or electronics of any kind. You can find those in the community tv room and in the villas. The rest of my family stayed in a villa. Those are amazing - two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a huge deck, full size modern kitchen and living area. The service was so great. Up in check in, we were given a very refreshing drink. Food was fantastic. But the best part was the little touches. It gets cold at night and to make sure you are comfortable, the staff puts hot water heating pads under the covers at the base of your bed. I love that! We went in a nature hike - which was also great and we introduced to the lodge's farming.

All around, great place. Two nights was perfect for us.

Saludos y Feliz 2014! Thank you so much for giving us a chance to set the tone for your fantastic Costa Rica family getaway. Your comments and vivid descriptions are much appreciated and helpful. Not many guests have a chance to experience both our Suites and our Villas :) Suites are perfect for couples who want to enjoy a luxurious nature-immersion experience emphasizing tranquil relaxation. Villas are perfect for families who want to live the magic of the cloud forest with the full comforts of home. For travelers escaping from the Winter chill, the tropical mountain weather at El Silencio Lodge & Spa can perfectly bridge your vacation before embracing the heat at Costa Rica's beaches (like our sister property's Hotel Punta Islita's)!
