“A warm welcome in a beautiful home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

This is a lovely home in the Annapolis Valley, located in a beautiful countryside close to Wolfville. The hostess is very friendly and engaging, rooms are lovely, and the breakfasts are excellent. Highly recommended for anyone staying in the area.

Room Tip: They're all good

My spouse and I spent a night at Carwarden while touring heritage houses in this part of Nova Scotia. The house is absolutely wonderful, an eclectic design with a Craftsman theme designed by a famous local architect in 1910. But the best part was our host, Mary who gave us a great welcome, offered us advice on local sites and restaurants and served a terrific multi-course breakfast in the morning. Mary grew up in the area and brims with stories of local people. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. Our stay was enjoyable and excellent value.

We arrived unexpected and without reservation in the late afternoon. We received a warm welcome by inn keeper Mary. She let us choose between two beautifull rooms. The Carwarden B&B is very charming old house in a beautifull Nova Scotia area. Wonderfull views over meadows and hills. And last but not least a great breakfast with fresh fruits, home baked bread and choice of eggs and granola! Go there!

The Carwarden is an impressive period farm house (1910) that has been cared for with much devotion. It is an observation that my seven biking friends and I recently noted. The setting of the house rests beautifully on a rise, in the midst of open fields. Consider allowing yourself time to gather on the grand veranda to take it all in. Mary engages with her guests in humor, lively conversation, local history, and music. All bedrooms have the feel of space and comfort. Allow time for a relaxing, beautifully prepared, home cooked breakfast. It is a wonderful place to be. Mary, you will see me back before too long!!

My girlfriend and i slept at Carwarden Bed & Breakfast 3 consecutive nights. The room was great, confortable and we had sweet dreams.

The first breakfast was the best of the three : The best benedictine eggs that i ever had!

Mary take care of us perfectly!

Best quality price, according to me.

Room Tip: Private bathroom is better.

Our stay at Carwarden was delightful. The house is immaculately maintained, and the grounds are a pleasure to see. Mary is a superb hostess - her breakfasts are amazing, her personality shines, and she makes you feel right at home. The house is conveniently located near the Lookout, Hall’s Harbour and Wolfville. Mary suggested that we see other things in the area that we never would have enjoyed without her advice. My only regret is that I did not ask Mary if we could take the two delicious muffins remaining on the plate after breakfast - I know she would have said “Yes!”.

Carwarden is a wonderful place to stay: the house, the food, the location, and Mary McMahon herself all ensure a peaceful and enjoyable visit. We spent eight days here in mid-August (2012), a visit that was built around the activities and events of our daughter's wedding. I knew we were off to a good start when Mary came out on to the back steps, beamed at us, welcomed us to Carwarden, and then suggested that people from Ontario didn't get taught how to park! (We had parked too much on the track and not enough on the grass.) This first impression was confirmed when we found a copy of "Keep Calm and Carry On" on a bedside table - certainly an appropriate choice for the parents of the bride. When I complimented her on this, I was offered "Miss Manners Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior"....
Carwarden is a lovely old house in spacious grounds, beautifully decorated, and Mary will gladly tell you its history and her own place in that history. Our room (Cortland) was spacious, comfortable, and quiet, with lovely views. Being in the country, we didn't experience city noises, but instead the peaceful sounds and sights of the country, such as a vixen barking, a cock pheasant gently talking to itself in the early morning, and bald eagles soaring nearby. As for breakfasts ... Breakfasts, prepared by Mary and served in the dining room, were fabulous. There was always juice, fresh fruit (local when we were there) of some kind, granola (the famous "birdseed"), some variety of homemade bread or rolls or muffins, and a wonderful main course such as eggs benedict, omelet, pancakes with sausages or bacon, a magical quiche. After a Carwarden breakfast, we were "good to go" until well into the afternoon.
There is a variety of restaurants in Wolfville, Kentville, New Minas, and Port William -- all within a short drive. On our first night, Mary recommended we go out to Hall's Harbour for very fresh lobster and other seafood; this, too, was not far away.
Mary is a wonderful, kind, thoughtful and helpful host., and a mine of local information. We look forward to returning again soon.
