“A beautiful lodge with a beautiful view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2010

We stayed at Apoyo Lodge after reading the reviews on tripadvisor and felt it was the best decision of our trip so far. We stayed 5 nights and Shamus upgraded us to a suite as there were no other guests during our stay. The lodge has obviously been built with love and great attention to detail. The place was spotless and our room was massive with a lovely balcony and view over the lake. We spent our days relaxing, swimming in the lovely temperate lagoon and made the most of the pedalo and inner tubes. Shamus is a lovely genuine guy who went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. He was happy to let us accompany him for free when he went to Masaya so that we could see the markets there. As it is so remote, unless you're eager to hike considerable distances you are reliant on Shamus for transportation which he charges for if he's going out of his way but I would absolutely recommend the lodge if you are looking to get away from it all for a while. The only other comment I'd make is that there are 3 dogs and 2 cats living on the property. This wasn't a problem for us as we love animals and they are all very friendly but if you're allergic then it might not be the best choice. By far our favourite destination and lodgings to date and already planning to go back in the future.

My two week stay at Apoyo Camp and Guest house was a blast! It's tucked away off the beaten path in a nature reserve, which offers a beautiful oasis in an amazing country (Nicaragua). With the communal pizza oven, warm lake, and lots of places to explore, I'd recommend a visit to Apoyo Camp and Guest house to every age group, kids included. The accommodations were comfortable and clean, and the staff were not only helpful, but a tonne of fun to be around. I'd highly recommend stopping by for at least a day, but I'm sure once you get there it'll end up being a couple of days!

We found Apoyo Camp while looking for a place to stay around the lake. Most of the places where full and the owner of San Simian (thank you Amanda) recommended that we check with this place. The road is really tough and you need a 4 x 4 to get there, since a part of the road is destroyed. Make sure to call to be picked up.
The hard access is nothing compared to what you will find there. The house is gorgeous with a big open space facing the view of the lake. Shamus welcomes you and you really feel like home really quickly. He upgraded us with the suite ($30 instead of the regular $45 , which is already a good deal). The room is spacious, the bed excellent, the view and private balcony wonderful, and a special mention for the bathroom. What else do you need ?
The place has a pizza oven and you can make your own and eat it with a couple of Tona (the local beer) in a friendly atmosphere. A little 45 min. walk in the mountain bring you to a very nice point of view of the laguna, and you can find a couple of restaurants if you are missing tostones too bad. We even saw some monkeys and a snake on our way! (it is also very good for bird watching)
Back from a warm walk, we enjoyed the paddle boat that Shamus just got the day before. It was fun but this paddle boat is definitely too slow...
These 2 nights were really like a dream in our stay to Nicaragua. It was a really nice break between walking up volcanoes and city life. Hard to think about it once back to work...

We experienced paradise. Allthough the owner is a strange guy ;-) , very handsome though. This could be a five star hotel. Everyting is perfect. Without joking, this is a mist see. You will exerience the villa life for only $40 or something like that. The owner is a cool dude from Toronto and knows it all. If you want to explore Nicaragua, this is a a hotspot. Grtz Marnix ;)

I am travelling in Nicaragua to learn Spanish and met Shamus the owner of Apoyo Camp in Granada. I decided to visit his brand new Lodge and Hostel on the far side of Laguna Apoyo.

Shamus has been building the lodge for two years and it is now ready to welcome guests. All facilities are brand new and beautifully designed. The property is on the lakefront and the mineral waters of the laguna are gorgeous to swim in. The best thing to do out here is relax, swim, enjoy a cold beer or pizza from the on-site woodfired oven. It is set in a nature reserve so if you're lucky you will spot monkeys, birds and other wildlife.

Being on the far side of the Laguna means a 4 wheel-drive vehicle is necessary to reach the lodge (which just adds to the remote peacefulness of the location) but Shamus offers a daily pickup from central Granada.

Highly recommended if you just want total relaxation in beautiful surroundings.
