“Average North Korean Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

My sister and I stayed at this hotel in September 2012, as part of a tour of North Korea.

We arrived at the hotel at night after a long drive in the countryside.

The staff were nice, and we had an ok meal for dinner and went to bed. The bed was comfortable, with a fetching child's duvet cover on the beds (cutesy little teddy bears) which wasn't big enough for the bed, but it was warm.
Across the road was some construction work and there was Korean music and propaganda blaring til midnight. We had power all night, which was a good thing, and it was clean and bug free.
The next morning, we got woken up with the music and propaganda. Not the hotels fault whatsoever, I will admit.
The only problem was the shower, my sister had a nice hot shower, but when I came to use it at 8am, there was no water left in the tank, the only thing that was coming out of both taps was air. Thankfully, and randomly, there was a big blue rubbish bin full of water directly positioned over the shower so I managed to have a cold bucket shower. It woke me up at least.
Breakfast was edible and the bread was quite nice.

We stayed here as a group touring the DPRK. So the story goes: "The Great Leader, President Kim Il Sung declared 8 March as Ladies Day so a hotel was built in Sariwon so ladies (and foreigners) could view the sights" Huge rooms. We had an anti-room leading into a TV lounge with a club leather settee and armchairs leading into a bedroom and en-suite bathroom. The bed was comfy and we slept well despite a "Big Ben" and traffic close by. The Manager seemed to do everything with about two female cooks/waitresses and a cleaner to help out. When we asked for some pillows he closed and bolted the main doors so no-one could leave (as normal) to take some pillows from adjoining rooms. We were told that the water would come on at 6.30 pm and again at 6.30 am the next day. He also switched off the electricity at 10pm. Evening meal and breakfast was sufficient with nice cold cheap beer. Don't try and leave to go walkies at night though: the manager sleeps on a sofa by the main, locked door. There is a nice mural on the wall of the foyer. All the communial furniture could have come from a pre-war Russian embassy. This March 8th hotel is just one of the delights of touring in the DPRK. I would stay there again. Enjoy the difference.
