Room - spacious, well appointed and nicely finished with a large en suite. However, the tv reception was non-existent and I got a room on the front overlooking a very busy road junction. The lorries pulling away from the lights started at 3.30 and didn't stop.
Dining room/meals/service - at dinner and breakfast the dining room was staffed by young people who had no idea of customer service or it would appear, even common sense. My water glass had a shard of glass at the bottom which I noticed almost as soon as I sat down. How could the person who laid the table have missed this? It could have done serious damage. The waiter replaced the glass but offered no apology. The evening meal was ok but not as well presented or tasty as the menu made it sound. And how hygienic is it to serve steak on a well-used wooden board? The waiting staff at both dinner and breakfast were going through the motions, plainly terrified of engaging with the punters, and apparently lacked any formal training in the way they brought food and cleared tables. The menu advertised 'buttered' fish when it should have said 'battered' - after one person complained, the mistake came to light. Where's the communication between front and back of house? And then I heard others ordering the same dish without being told the mistake. Overall this place has aspirations to be a quality hotel but it is laughably not. It may be the most salubrious hotel in Highworth but that's not a recommendation.
