Istas is an institution and a piece of history. Originally set up to supply the locals with bread with fromage blanc ( a fresh, mild white cheese spread) and radishes, it has been serving most of its Belgian customers for several generations. The menu has expanded to include steak with a variety of sauces (my favourite is the poivre vert flambé), stew, mussels, game and fish all served with the best frites you could wish for. They have a nice selection of beers too, including Kriek (cherry beer) and blanche. Istas offers unpretentious good value food served quickly in what is usually a quite simple yet busy environment. The waiters are fascinating. They know most of the customers since there is so much repeat business and are at ease chatting in French, Dutch, English and German. Families and friends go often, given the great value.
