“Lovely Bed & Breakfast - Stay here!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2010

My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary during our trip up the East Coast of Australia. It is a lovely setting in Montville and whilst we love the coast it was also great to see some of the hinterland. Lovely host - we were met by Leeroy and the dog and cats and given a warm welcome. The rooms were lovely - very unique and comfortable and I particularly liked the old-fashioned bath. Very French style - some may say a bit shabby chic - if you like your hotel room "cut from the same cloth" as every other chain then this is not for you - but if you want something different and homely then the spotted chook is for you! Also enjoyed having the woodburner in the room - however, if you're from Scotland you won't need it on an Australian winter night - gets quite hot!!

Lovely cooked breakfast prepared by Leeroy. We also had a fantastic meal at the Montville Inn (I think) - second to last pub when leaving Montville - can highly recommend the food here.

Overall, fantastic stay and we recommend it for the discerning traveller who likes a bit of home comfort occasionally!

My family and I have been staying at Spotted Chook Ferme Auberge for many years and it has always offered a unique and delightful B & B experience like no other in Montville. We fell in love with The Spotted Chook for so many reasons and have continued this love affair for nearly 10 years. Each room has its own individual name and style, this time we booked the Loft Room which has scenic views over the valley and offers a feeling of living in the clouds!

Each room has its own bathroom, our Loft Room had a funky claw foot bath to relax in while sipping on a champers! The bed is handmade and beautifully comfortable with lovely fresh white linen and plump pillows - a lovely nest for our weekend away.

The breakfasts at the Spotted Chook are always inspirational and we are never disappointed! We indulged in farm fresh eggs - Eggs Benedict for my husband, and poached for me, with fabulous homemade sourdough, roasted tomatoes and rocket from the garden. There are platters of friands, croissants and fresh seasonal fruits to chose from and freshly brewed coffee.

The Spotted Chook is a our little piece of paradise - somewhere to escape to from your hectic city life and a place to relax and spoil yourself with a special wine by the fire, either in the guest lounge or in your own private nest.

We cannot sign off without mentioning a relatively new addition to the Spotted Chook - Amelie's Petite Mason. A unique little cottage designed for the romantic at heart! It will make you smile and send a shiver down your spine as you prop yourself up in the spa bath on your deck overlooking the valley - have a look for yourself at www.spottedchook.com.au - Amelies. Who could resist for that very special weekend of romance!

Thank you Jane and Leeroy for another memorable weekend in the country!

From the moment we were greeted by the managers nothing was too much trouble.
We were taken to the Snow Pea Suite and from the moment we stept into the suite, the sun was filtering through the windows, we thought we had steped into a French Picture. There was a beautiful view over the garden from our deck and our daughers were able to have a run around in the privacy of the yard.
There were two single beds tucked around the corner of our bedroom where our daughters slept, and this gave my wife and I privacy. From the fluffy robes and quality linen we would recommend this accommodation to our family wanting to have a relaxing stay.
The gourmet breakfast was fantastic. My wife had scrambled eggs and I had the full breakfast (my only complaint was we ate too much) Our daughters wanted different things and it was prepared and server without a fuss. Thank you.
It was such a lovely relaxing stay.

We're just back from a couple of nights at the Spotted Chook. Like many others it had been on our list of places to stay for a while and we finally managed to get a weekend to ourselves and booked.

Due to a bit of a technical hitch we ended up staying one night in the Snowpea room and the other in Amelie's Cottage. Not a real problem as the rooms were both beautiful and the bag transfers were taken care of for us with the minimum of fuss while we headed off walking.

The accommodation itself was simple but a lot of thought had been put into the little details. There were unsurprisingly a large number of chooks but also fresh flowers and knick-knacks everywhere. It felt somewhat like visiting a friend's house and the welcome from Leeroy and Jane was equally warm. Apparently they were recently returned from three months overseas and more than happy to share travel stories and take the time to make us feel welcome in their home.

Given the temperatures outside we were grateful to see that the fire was lit in the lounge room and even happier when we noticed a batch of dough proving in the warm spot next to the fire.

We opted to dine in on the Saturday night and were not disappointed. Starter was a prawn dish with a mild curry sauce, the main was coq au vin and we finished the meal with a majestic strawberry souffle and tea or coffee. They were happy to cope with pretty much any dietary requirements or preferences if necessary. BTW it's BYO.

Breakfasts were a very relaxed affair. We overindulged in homemade granola, thick yoghurt and pastries and while there's no set menu for the cooked portion Leeroy was quite happy to make some suggestions. Most of these involved fresh eggs from their own chickens and the eggs benedict with smoked salmon was particularly good.

As for the rooms the Snowpea was fine although very green. It would be ideal for a couple with a young child or two if all were happy in the same room.

Amelie's Cottage was another step up. It's self-contained with a fridge, two-plate hob and microwave/convection oven. There's a big bathroom with a shower and claw-foot bath and outside on the deck there was a giant hot-tub with views over the valley. The layout was open plan but with the fire going we were toasty and warm throughout the night.

The only downsides were the scratchy bathrobes and the slightly disappointing coq au vin (at least compared to the rest of the meal) and coffee but these were small issues when compared to what was one of the most relaxing getaways we've spent for a long time.

We stayed in the Snowpea room, which opened onto a little porch & garden , and also had an extra couple of single beds in nook tucked around the corner where our 7-year-old daughter slept, so it was perfect for our small family. The little creek down bottom of the property is picturesque. Leroy and Jane were incredibly friendly. The breakfasts were luscious, with eggs fresh from the spotted chooks out the back. Altogether a wonderful weekend.

I booked this trip last minute and wasn't sure what to expect. When we got there we immediately were struck with how French and how clean this place was. You're greeted by the owners- both are very nice!! The decor is just adorable- very country and very french. The rooms are very big and spacious- and each room is different and unique.

The breakfast there is amazing- there is a mixture of fresh fruit, cereals, hot breakfast with gourmet bread and very delicious jams.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who needs some R&R. It's worth every dollar!

A Warm and inviting ambience greets you at the door when you arrive at this 'home away from home' in the hills of Montville (a mere hop, skip and a jump away from busy Brisbane). And the family pets are also willing to greet you if you are so inclined....cute, cuddly and totally addictive....... A Dog, A Cat and a Kitten...

Aside from the natural beauty surrounding this abode which beckons you as you wind your way through the hills, I am struck as always by the lushness of the mountains. Spotted Chook is amongst it all, relatively peaceful though on the main drag and with adequate facilities.

The decor is French Provincial I think, though different interpretations abound - simple, neat and tidy. I stayed with my mother at "Amelies" for mothers day. The Room had a fireplace, verandah with open air spa and a BBQ for those enthusiastic about preparing a meal overlooking the mountains. A Kitchenette is also within. The bathroom was a very generous size with little window seat near the shower and a claw foot bath for character (perfectly functional of course) - it also caters for handicapped persons which I noted would suit my father.Amelies has a dedicated driveway and parking space a few metres from the Main building. Generally warm and spacious though not super plush for those of you wanting a 5star experience. I also didn't notice whether or not wireless was available.

The main building offered a fireplace and DVDs if needed.

Noteable aspects of our one night stay were our host Martine Lokan (filling in for the owners as they were away). Bright, cheerful an exceptional cook if breakfast was anything to go by and with a perfect temperament for dealing with people of all types who must come her way. Martine was exceptionally friendly and willing to have a chat anytime. My communication with the owners was done by email and I gained a sense of warmth and professionalism here also. They were accommodating enough to let us Stay at Amelies for one night even though this is usually booked for a 2 night minimum.

As pet owners, we couldn't get enough of the new kitten - all animals are welcomed within the main house giving it a family appeal and natural warmth expected from such a place. I did however notice that an older couple at breakfast were less enamoured with the pets - but you can't please everyone. We even had a visit from the older cat during the evening down at Amelies which helped us miss our cats at home just that little bit less.

One criticism - the pantry in the kitchenette seemed to have cockroaches and the dinnerware, glasses etc was dirty/dusty and possibly in need of replacing as it seemed a little too stained/chipped/cracked for my liking.

All in All - a very pleasant stay and one I would recommend to others.
