“Excellent, Fantasic, we'll be back!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

My partner and I went to Hunchy Hide away to celebrate our honeymoon.
You couldn’t ask for better host as Ali and Dennis!
The minute we walked into the Gum Nut cottage we were impressed.
Everything was spotless and the fridge was filled with the making of the next few days of breakfast meals. Not one thing was missed.
Lovely fresh bread, scones, candles, firewood already set in the fireplace.
It was just wonderful!!! But the BEST touch was having the possums joining us each night to share wine, cheese and fruit. Who would have known the possums like salami, camembert cheese, grapes and apples.
Neither my partner nor I are woodsy kind of people, but it was a fantastic, relaxing getaway and we’ll definitely will be back!
We highly recommend Hunchy Hideaway.

Thanks Ali and Dennis!

We stayed in the fig tree cottage - it was so beautiful and peaceful - we did not want to leave. We stayed for 3 nights - and it was 3 nights we will never forget...it was just so relaxing. Ali and Denis our hosts were just so great - they were very friendly and very helpful.

We would highly reccomend this accommodation to anyone and everyone - it it just so special. Our only complaint it time went too quickly :-(

Room Tip: the fig tree was perfect - fully self contained

We stayed at Hunchy for 3 nights and it was great.

Ali & Dennis gave you stuff to make breakfast, scones for afternoon tea and peace. It was absolutely magnificent.

If you want to do nothing but relax or go sightseeing then this is the perfect place.

We loved it. Thank you Ali & Dennis

My partner and I went to Hunchy Hideaway to celebrate our 2 year anniversary and having stayed at similar styled places before we were quite excited. However, once we arrived this excitement quickly faded.
The cabin was covered in a thick layer of dust, even the ceiling fan had a thick black layer upon it. All the glasswear and crockery had to be thoroughly washed before it could even be used. The shower was covered in mould, and the spa bath jets all had built up lime scale which also affected the outdoor shower. The BBQ was also filthy to the point that my partner spend 20 minutes trying to scrub it clean and it still wasnt in any condition to cook in. It was obvious the cabin hadnt been thoroughly clean in a while.
The cabin came with breakfast provision, however this consisted of stale bread, and bacon that was so pumped with water that it was reduced to 40% of its original size once cook after it had been boiling on the fry pan for several minutes as all the water escaped the meat and boiled away. Needless to say we werent impressed.
Another matter that left us unimpressed was the fact that despite the fact we had placed the Do Not Disturb Notice along the pathway that lead solely to our cottage, in the morning we awaoke to discover it had been taken down and someone had moved things, replaced things, and added things to our balcony. The main sliding doors to the cabin did not feature curtains so this lead to concerns over privacy.
When we left I approached the owners about our issues and they looked at me contemptuously and flatout told me I was wrong with all my complaints. Rather than apologise and look into the matter they simply shook their heads in disbelief and argued with me, saying I was the first to complain! I highly doubt this however as the guest book for the cabin had a fair few pages obviously torn out; one can only presume they had a fair few bad reviews.
This place has a lot of potential but is obviously run by rude and lazy people who considering how much they charge for the cabins can afford to at least clean them properly and provide decent provisions they can afford to put the effort in that the customer is paying for.

DenandAli, Owner at Hunchy Hideaway, responded to this review, May 18, 2011
It is incredibly confronting personally when you have guests whose expectations you failed to meet, and while it has not happened before in the two years we have been here, it was certainly the case with these guests. We really do want our guests to enjoy their stay at Hunchy Hideaway and indeed the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland. We appreciate feedback and positive suggestions for improvements and our guest books are all intact, warts and all! The guestbook in that particular cottage had indeed had pages ripped out – just after we put them in two years ago, one guest tore some pages out of the middle of the book to use as scrap paper and up until now we didn’t realize the implications of missing pages as the many lovely reviews have now overtaken the ‘missing’ section! The book has now been ripped into two pieces which we find incredibly sad.

We do apologize to these guests for our inability to respond to their complaints when they were checking out. We take our business very seriously and actually do all of the cleaning ourselves so we do know what has been done and the condition of every cottage when the guests check in. They did not complain once during their stay, and in fact we heard much laughter and singing from them over the two days they were here. The complaints at check out time were so nasty and personal that I hope that we can be forgiven for not being able to respond properly – we were just so taken aback and really taken by surprise that we just stood there, quietly stunned, and I do remember saying to them that we have never had a complaint like this before! I might also have managed to say that the bread is bought fresh from the bakery on the day they check in.

We live in a rainforest environment and we use bore water in our cottages. Spiders take up residence in an afternoon and have no respect for the fact that you have just cleaned their last web away. Every time a guest stokes their fire a fine layer of dust will come to rest on every surface in the cottage. Every surface is thoroughly dusted after every guest leaves. In fact this cottage had all its benches re-varnished just the week before these guests arrived! We can only think that they did not look closely at the surfaces and dishes until they had stoked up the fire fairly vigorously on the first evening. The dishes and glasses are also washed before being put back in place. We do appologise for the fan having dust on it – they are very high up and hard to clean on a day to day basis and in fact are done by our window cleaner when he comes with his high ladder every few months .

These cottages are 10 years old and admittedly have some signs of limescale that no amount of scrubbing will remove. There are indeed some black marks on the grouting in the shower, but this is no reflection on the amount of scrubbing they receive! We have to limit the amount of chemicals and bleach we use as we have a water and sewerage recycling system that does not like chemicals. The outdoor shower on the deck of this cottage was a whimsical addition by the first owners and we aren’t aware of anyone using it – this may be the trigger we need to take it away!

We include a very generous amount of breakfast provisions in our tariff. We are aware that other establishments give continental provisions and charge extra for bacon and eggs, however we like to give everyone provisions to cook. We buy our shortcut bacon fresh from the local IGA in Woombye and every cottage is supplied with eight pieces. Sometimes it is cut a little thinner than others, but we have no reason to think that it has been pumped full of water and it certainly isn’t cheap to buy. The bread comes from the local bakery and still appeared reasonably fresh and soft when we cleared the cottage. We are very sorry that the complimentary breakfast provisions did not live up to the high standard that these guests obviously require.

We pride ourselves on providing a totally private environment for every guest. The ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs, another whimsical addition by the first owners are rarely used and are not even necessary as each cottage has its own private pathway. They have to be securely placed over the wooden pole to make sure they stay in place and I can only think that it was not the case this time, and either the wind blew it off or a possum walked over it and knocked it off. We have a large population of possums who enjoy being fed and entertaining our guests who sit outside. If there is nothing to eat they often ‘steal’ the fat container from under the barbeque and leave it on the ground after eating the contents. The most common cause of broken glasses is the possums! There is no other explanation for the overnight ‘visitors’. When we cleared the cottage, we found nothing on the deck that was not there when the guests checked in apart from several boxes of empty beer and wine bottles.

The barbeque is a standard ‘plate’ style which is cleaned and oiled after every guest has left and covered with a wooden lid. Sometimes the possums bring food to eat and sit on the barbeque so the lid will sometimes have stains from berries or fruit.

We do feel that we meet, and indeed often exceed, the expectations of most of our guests and all of the reviews already posted here reflect that. We hope that our response to the criticism in this review is sufficient to help others understand that we live in a living, breathing rainforest, not a city with its slick bug and possum free environment.

Please read all of our other reviews as we feel that they are a more fair and accurate reflection of who we are and what we do
Thanks
Ali & Denis

My partner and I decided to stay here over the Easter break, we were struggling to find anywhere free and Hunchy's was the only place available. I can't be more grateful that this place was where we ended up! We had read a review that stated as soon as you arrived you instantly felt relaxed. At the time we both had somewhat rolled our eyes. Well, we were both surprisingly wrong! Literally as soon as we arrived, we were overwhelmed with a calm relaxing sensation. We stayed in the Cedar Cabin, upon first glance the relaxation continued. We spent an absolutely relaxing and romantic few days. Ali and Denis could not have been more friendly, and the breakfast hamper was just lovely. We will definitely be coming back and recommending to family and friends!

As soon as we walked down the garden path to reception, we knew we had arrived to a special place. And it only got better from then on!

We stayed in gum nut cottage and had a fabulous 5 nights, enjoying the bush outlook from all windows, the great double spa bath, feeding the possums and bush turkey, and it even got cold enough once for lighting up the slow combustion stove!!! Ahhhhh candles, roaring fire, red wine....just the best romatic spot!

For serious walkers, please accept the generous offer from Ali & Denis for a car shuffle to do the 11 km walk from the Falls to Lake Baroon. We did it and don't regret it ( even though sore all over tonight)!

It deserves all the accolades other reviewers have written and which guided our decision to book there in the first place.

SERENITY NOW!

This is one of the most relaxing settings we have stayed in. Our room was beautiful, clean and cosy, nestled in amongst the beautiful greenery. The homemade scones and lovely breakfast were just a couple of many small touches that added to our stay. With Montville so close by, we had plenty of things to do by day if we chose, and many excellent restaurants for dinner. Above all, privacy was a given, making Hunchy a perfect place to get away from any outside distractions.
