“Clever cuisine and excellent wine!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

I had the pleasure of eating ath Casa Piolas a couple of years ago during a business trip.

We enjoyed a 12 course "menu degustacion", or tasting menu, that included some of the most clever dishes I've ever had the pleasure of eating. The chefs, who are big fans of Heston Blumenthal, like to experiment with dishes that trick the senses. For example, one dish looked like bacon served with a raw egg but was, in fact, something quite different (I'll let you go try it for yourself!).

I agree with the other reviews that the wine list at Casa Piolas is impressive. There are some delicious "vinos del terreno", or local wines, along with other from different regions of Spain.

The service at Casa Piolas was very attentive and the staff spoke enthusiastically about food in general.

Algarinejo is a bit off the beaten path but, if you're travelling through Granada province, is definitely worth making a detour. You will eat very well!

“An unforgettable experience in a most unexpected place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

Casa Piolas is in Algarinejo, Granada province - a small rural white village surrounded by olive groves. You enter through what looks like a normal village bar but if you have come for a tasting menu, you will be ushered into Jose's restaurant - Interesting artwork lines the walls of this low lit room. It is all very tasteful and low key and the placemats reveal Jose's interest in music - they are old LPs. José is warm & welcoming and he & his well trained staff will guide you through the 10 course tasting menu where each course is a feast for the senses - Using local ingredients and recipes he learned from his mother, José adds his own trademark creativity to each dish. We have been to Casa Piolas 3 times and each time there were new seasonal treats and some of our old favourites - one of which is an olive tree made of pure chocolate and filled with foie. At 45 euros, this is one of the best meal deals you will ever get. If you want advice for wines to go with your meal, trust José - he knows and you won't have to pay through the nose. And if you want to work off your meal before driving back, you can walk along the river on the Camino de los Molinos - very shady & pleasant.

“Fantastic restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend who lived in Granada Province. It is in a small city called Algarinejo which has a population of about 5000 inhabitants. Casa Piolas is tacked away in the corner of the main square next to the farmacia (chemist). Nothing indicates to the passing tourist (of which would be not very many) that here he is going to find Michelin star quality food. Food was of an amazing quality, prepared with care and attention to detail and clearly displaying great culinary skill and a lot of imagination. We certainly be back many times and will recommend this place to all our friends. We intend to eat in Casa Piolas again in July. If this restaurant was in Marbella you would have to wait a month for the opportunity to book a table. It is a Michelin star quality restaurant for the price that you can afford. Wine was also excellent. It was in fact so good that we bought 2 bottles take away and ordered 24 bottles on the internet from online wine company after we got home. What is also unusual in Spain and great for tourists is that Casa Piolas stays open all day, no siesta break. You can eat there at 4:00 p.m. for example. There are not many places in Spain (out of tourist hot spots) where this is possible. Be sure to order testing menu. There are 4 to choose from (including one vegetarian) depending on how long you have for a meal and how hungry you are but for all you need to be hungry because if you consume a lot of small portions you end up consuming a lot of food. The most complex one cost € 50 per person and takes 150 minutes to eat. We ordered menu called gastronomic for € 45. Our bill including wine and drinks was € 121 for 2 which I find very reasonable considering that everything was prepared fresh, of exceptional quality and mainly from local produce. Service was also very professional. Every dish was explained to us in detail. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Malaga to Algarinejo but if you decide to go there you would pleased you made an effort.

“Without a doubt the best ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Many visits later, Las Piolas is still the best restaurant I have ever been to. From the delightful waitressing staff to the charming records as place mats, every single thing about Las Piolas exceeds expectations.

The food is incredible - delicious - beautifully presented - exquisitely decorated - flavours combined to perfection.

The idea of for instance local meats being presented in the style of a washing line is just amazing!

Joseillo is a dream - his love and passion for his food and the delight of his guests is second to none.

150% recommended - an absolute MUST visit.

“Excellent local food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

We went for a special meal and came away very impressed. On arrival you enter what appears an ordinary bar. The were a half dozen customers sitting on stools and having a chat. We ordered a few drinks and after a few minutes a chef brought us a couple of spicy chorizo sausages and a flaming pan to cook them in. A hands on start to the evening. And all good fun.
When we went into the restaurant itself we were the only customers, but the room was nicely decorated: the theme was rock music, with old 33 rpm records as place mats, and 45s as coasters. The menu was unique: local produce in a variety of imaginative courses. We went for the 4 tapas starter and they were magnificent. Small creative dishes which you have to taste to believe: combinations of flavours you wouldn't automatically put together. But their flavour was exquisite. Every dish was a joy.
The main course of steak which we cooked ourselves in a hot pan on burners was again delicious.
The wine was also not expensive but a pleasant accompaniment to a good meal.
A real treat. I'd highly recommend this restaurant.
