“Burlington in a class of its own”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013 via mobile

Had a very enjoyable 2 nights stay with a fantastic 7 course taster menu with a wine package to compliment the food at the Burlington restaurant. What a great way to try a range of wines you would not normally choose. The wine waiter new his stuff and made each glass an interesting lesson in flavour and quality. Only tip I would say is watch out on the service charges a lot of hidden extras both in the restaurant and when ordering drinks.

Stayed at The Devonshire Arms 13th February 2013 as a surprise Valentine's Treat arranged by my husband. Were upgraded free of charge to a stunning room with four-poster bed (The Gericault room). Bouquet of flowers in bedroom. Delightful swim in good sized pool and relaxed in the jacuzzi in the Spa just across from the hotel. Had a delicious 2 course meal in the Brasserie. At all times, staff were professional, attentive and very friendly. The accommodation, service, meals and staff were faultless. Felt totally relaxed and comfortable throughout. Will definitely return again - hopefully soon. Would definitely recommend to others.

We went for a family gathering for an 80th birthday just for 1 night.
We had just started to unload our bags from the car when a young man in tweeds appeared to take them into reception - great start to our stay. He also magically appeared to take them again when we were leaving our room the next day!
The entrance is hung with waders and wellies and fishing rods.
Lobby/hall/reception is amazing with a log fire, beams, atmosphere…..lovely lady at reception escorted us to our room which was on the 1st floor and called Wharfedale and looked out over the ornamental garden to the fell.
A lovely large room with 4 poster bed with canopy and curtains. I don’t really get enthused by 4 posters however this one was pretty special. It was solid (I have slept in a couple which were pretty wobbly) and had lovely drapes and a fantastic mattress and pillows. It was also about 3 feet off the ground. It was a wee bit of a climb to get in but I do appreciate not having to get up to get up if you see what I mean :) That bed is the most comfortable I have ever slept in to date. Excellent heating. Lovely sash windows which work. Wonderful old pictures on the walls, really old properly bound books all over the place, magazines, fabulous old furniture. It’s like staying in someone’s home.
Hospitality tray par excellence, hairdryer, hot water bottle, apples, writing paper and envelopes, tv, phone. Wifi in the room but we had to be near the window to find it - due to the hills no doubt.
The bathroom was spacious and modern with double basins and a large bath/shower which had a rain head and was very easy to use – just one tap for water and one lever for how hot. My husband’s a plumber and understands all these shower things but I sometimes have trouble with the modern ones so this was simple and it had good pressure and lots of hot! If I had to criticise I think that the bath should be the other way round with the shower at the door end rather than the loo end, but that's being ultra picky!!
Towels were big and white and fluffy, bathrobes were the same and flannels too. Lovely toiletries.
I can’t remember which function room we were in for the party but it was just the right size for our group and the food was excellent. We had all chosen our meals beforehand and the staff just had to deliver our plates. The food was superb. After we had eaten they took away one of the tables so that we could have a dancing area as we had some live music.
When we got back to our room we discovered that we had been replenished – more tea, coffee, apples, towels tidied, bed turned down and foot balm supplied which I needed after a night in stilettos!
Breakfast in the Burlington was an experience. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen such a varied amount of fruit in February! Then there were the usual suspects – juice, muesli, yoghurt, croissants etc. and the cooked Yorkshire breakfast more than lived up to expectations.
We have stayed in modern hotels and country house hotels and old hotels and I must say that this hotel tops them all. It’s full of character, thick carpets, the floors creak and the furniture’s old and beautiful and has been loved by somebody. The curtains are fabulous. All the staff that we met were polite, friendly, helpful and couldn’t do enough for us – gracefully. Loved it. I'm just sorry that we didn't have enough time to experience the spa and swimming pool. Maybe next time....

Warm welcome. Always friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable lounges although the lighting for reading rather dim. Rooms comfortable and well appointed.

Open fires which were well stoked were very welcome in the cold wet weather we experienced.

Food in the Brasserie was of a high stendard. Good choice, well cooked and attentive service. We did not eat in the Burlington Restaurant except for breakfast which was excellent.

Altogether, we would return for another stay if only to sample the many walks within easy reach of the hotel

Room Tip: We can only comment on the ground floor newer rooms

Dear Rubislaw2

Although we have the breath-taking views being located on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales, we also have the temperamental weather that accompanies this.

I hope on your next visit the sun will be more favourable

Kind regards

Having visited the Devonshire Arms on business a number of times – and exceptionally good it was too – I had always planned taking my wife and to share the restaurant experience and wine list – and last summer’s trip to the Yorkshire deals provided the opportunity. (Note: I share our experience from Aug. 2012.)
There’s a delightful welcome to the Devonshire Arms and the staff are charming. Our room was spacious, immaculately clean but starting to show its age; though no complaints, we were entirely comfortable.
The public areas are tastefully decorated and we delighted at the lounge decorated with ‘dog’ wallpaper; you’ll have to visit to understand and the reported figure of £500 a roll is quite believable.
Breakfast was busy and of expected standard for the quality of hotel. Overall, a lovely stay but a little disappointed by dinner in the Burlington Restaurant - reviewed separately.
This is a charming hotel easily accessed from Leeds Bradford airport if up from London on business.

Our family (14 and 18 year old girls, mum and dad) stayed at the Devonshire arms for a couple of nights. We were looking for a characterful and gently luxurious hotel in the Dales and were not disappointed. Our rooms (Artist and Photographer) were brand newly decorated (literally 7 days ago) and had loads of space and fantastic bathrooms. We enjoyed dinner in the Brasserie which was perfect up market family fare, breakfast was delicious and the welcome and surprisingly, the weather were warm and perfect. We did some wonderfull walks (Malham cove, busy but spectacular, and the walk recommended by Eddy the concierge, from Buckden) and we wandered down to Bolton Abbey on the last day, trying to put off going home as long as possible. The only thing we really needed here was a dog, which the hotel welcomes by the way. I am being a little harsh only giving the hotel 4 stars... it probably should be 4 and half but there were a couple of tiny niggles... A slightly chaotic breakfast, a lack comfortable areas for pre-dinner drinks and I hate display cabinets selling things like towels and spa products.. but maybe thats just me.

Room Tip: Photographer and Artist in the new wing are spacious, newly decorated and have amazing bathrooms (es...

What can you say? It is true the hotel is in a lovely setting with great walks from the door. The spa area, though quite small, is perfectly formed and staff throughout the hotel have been well trained not to pass anyone without a greeting or asking if anything is needed. Open fires and plenty of lounges were welcome in the very cold weather. Rooms, ours was at the lower end of what's available, are clean and smart with everything that you would expect, Although the bathroom was cramped it had all been recently refurbished, Someone in charge of cleaning needed to sit on the loo and see how grubby the back of the bathroom door was though!
We ate in the brasserie rather than pushing the boat out to try the Burlington restaurant, food was good, service was efficient and the wine not as over priced as I thought it might be.
BUT do watch out for the service charge which is added to EVERYTHING, even the two drinks we had in the lounge. Whilst you can ask for any or all of these charges to be removed from your bill that makes you look a bit mean so I expect most do pay and it becomes a sort of 'stealth tax'.
There are other examples. Look at the 'by the glass' wine prices. Small and large glasses are at the same per ml rate. Great, not being encouraged to drink too much just to get a bargain; except that the medium sized glass, probably what most people order, works out at more per ml than the other two, in all cases.
I'm nit picking really. Many of those staying were clearly repeat guests and loved it. I think I've been to other places, for similar money (we were there on a winter mid week deal), that I would prefer to revisit though.

Room Tip: The website leads you to believe that Nidderdale rooms have a view; ours was of the car park. If you...
