“A fantastic weekend, one I will remember for a long time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

From the warm welcome at the start of the stay down to the smallest detail (home-made biscuits in room for example) our stay at this hotel was fantastic, the staff are very attentive and nothing is too much trouble. By far the best thing is the food, not just in the Michelin starred Burlington restaurant which is indeed exceptional but also the Brasserie was very nice and the breakfasts were beautiful. Bolton Abbey estate is beautiful and well worth a visit, the Abbey itself is a half mile walk across beautiful countryside (beware, lots of sheep so be careful what you wear!). The estate is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire (who currently reside at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire) and the personal touches are unique, their family crest is not just on the fine china in the room but also on the carpet, which personally I loved. Worth mentioning though is the optional gratuity charges which are automatically added to your bill, in our opinion we were happy to pay it as the service was second to none, but some people may not be. All-in-all this was a fantastic weekend (for my birthday) and one I will remember for a long time.

Room Tip: Nidderdale Room 21, fantastic views

I am delighted that you had such a lovely stay to celebrate your birthday and that you enjoyed the Duke and Duchess’ personal touches around the hotel. We are lucky to have the Bolton Abbey Estate on our doorstep – and if you do choose to visit us again, remember that hotel guests get complimentary access to the Estate car parks to save yourself a walk!
Kind regards,

We stayed here on a dinner, bed and breakfast room with a bottle of champagne in the room - all for £300. Considering the meal was in a Michelin restaurant it offered fantastic value - hence the reason for 5 star rating. If I was to pay the rack rate I wouldn't have given it that.

The room was nice, and offered all the facilities that you want, tea/coffee (with fresh milk delivered when necessary, and was decently clean - except for 2 points - the toilet was marked underneath - but was cleaned during turn down service and a few insects in the room.

The main reasons why it got a 5star is due to the excellent spa facilities, steam room, sauna, pool etc and the most delightful Burlington restaurant.

The prices for drinks are extortionate - £12.50 for a cocktail is shocking, and the added 'service charge' is unacceptable but all in all great value.

The Burlington Restaurant is a very good restaurant and probably deserves a second Michelin star on the food that we had. However, despite warm staff, we expect fittings and furnishings to be at least as good as we have at home when you are paying the sort of money they charge for a large room. In short the rooms are tired, composite cheap marble for bathroom tops and one bar of soap in two days do not cut it I am afraid.

We pay the same price at The Mark in New York which is in a different world in terms of expenditure on fittings. i understand country style, but cheap dirty phones, lamps etc. are not "country style".

Kauri Cliffs, Villa D'este are as good as it gets. The Devonshire Arms has a great restaurant but is in need of lower prices and equally demanding standards in its rooms.

Thank you for your recent visit and for taking the time to write a review, I am pleased that you enjoyed our Burlington restaurant and that you found our staff to be warm and friendly. Our hotel is unique in that every single bedroom is different;, our affectionately named ‘Old House’ rooms date back to 1757, however for those who prefer a more modern bedroom we also have the Wharfedale Wing which is modern and bright. Once again, thank you for your 4/5 review, we hope to welcome you back in the future.

We spent one night at the Devonshire Arms and ate in the Brasserie. The room was gorgeous, comfortable, quiet and stylish. The hotel itself is beautiful and the walks around Bolton Abbey are well worth the effort (even in the rain). The food in the Brasserie (more relaxed than the Burlington) is really really fantastic comfort food but we'll try the Burlington next time just to get a try of both! Can't recommend this highly enough, the employees are all so nice and the hotel is really welcoming and not at all stuffy

We stayed at the Devonshire Arms a week ago for one night celebrating our wedding anniversary. The location is beautiful and the hotel, our room and overall ambience were very nice. Our meal at the Burlington was simply outstanding and the prestige menu was certainly worth the expense. The service in the Burlington prior to, and during, our meal was excellent with friendly and knowledgable waiters and maitre'd. The only minor complaint would be that the service in the cocktail bar area earlier in the day was very slow - due possibly to only one member of staff serving. Numerous suited members of staff passed by looking busy however having to wait for 25 minutes for our table to be cleared and a drink to arrive is a little long and not what would be expected at this standard of hotel. The first few hours of a stay do influence your overall impressions. It may seem a small issue however it was our first visit and tardy service did tarnish what would have been otherwise a perfect stay.

Having recently experienced a superb afternoon of indulgent pampering at your beautiful spa,I would be keen to pass this information on to your Spa manager. Is this possible do you have a colleague in the spa who provides this first rate service?
Many Thanks

Stayed with fiancee for her 40th birthday at this very nice hotel.

To be terse:

Good points:
- Great atmospheric hotel with Michelin * restaurant, excellent service (don't settle for a seat near the entrance - drafty)
- Fantastic breakfast, some may say it's only small, but definitely perfect/enough
- Great new (looking) bathroom (but small)
- Clean
- Has a pool and gym, with sauna and steam room (see below)
- Doorman very nice / helpful

Bad points:
- Pets allowed in rooms. Not sure I like the idea of having a beast previously occupy my bed, but this may appeal to some
- Paid an extra £25 per person to upgrade to Nidderdale room, however it was still a very small room with ...
- Small beds
- I love it when hotels display Molton Brown, yet provide you with alternatives
- Had to pay a further £25 per person upgrade to dine in the restaurant vs. the brasserie
- Pool and gym rather cramped. Our Sunday use found the pool rammed with kids. I love kids, but my own :-)

Now, about the missing 'magic touch'. I booked this trip especially to stay with my fiancee on her 40th birthday. I made that point clear. However there were no special touches around this, no upgrade (they were "quiet" that day), no freebies, nada. Sure, we got a card (not birthday :-) in the room on arrival, but I suspect this is a standard touch. Just the smallest of treats, considering the price, would have added that little bit extra, but alas no.

As a comparison, on my 40th birthday overnight stay in the Radisson Manchester, they actually did something really special for me. Sure, it's a chain hotel and a different animal, but if such a place can go the extra mile ...

Note: I realise one should never expect, however 'nice touches' are how establishments people get extra points, thus 4* versus 5*.

Room Tip: Pay even more?
