“Great base for visiting Maramures”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

We had four nights at Casa Muntean and were delighted with our stay. Comfortable accommodation, delicious food (soups to die for, plus excellent breakfasts) and homemade palinca which rounded off a busy day's sightseeing perfectly. Florin and his family were very welcoming and were quietly on hand to give advice, recommend excellent places to go, fix up horse-and-cart rides, whatever we needed. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Strongly recommended. Btw, first Monday of the month, livestock market at Sighetu Marmatiei - down a dusty track immediately after the turning to the village museum on the edge of the town. One of the real highlights of our stay. Visit the villages on a Sunday, if you can!

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are possibly quieter, being further from the road. We found it very peaceful.

We had a fantastic stay here, lovely atmosphere and were made to feel very welcome. We truly felt like we were guests of the family and were treated accordingly. Had a great tour and rented our bikes here, all very reasonable prices and we also got lovely generous breakfasts and dinner. They made a special effort due to us being veggies and all the food was lovely! Would recommend a stay here, just a lovely helpful family!

Room Tip: Florin can pick you up and drop you off in Sighet Gratis and we asked for a dinning table to be set...

I stayed 3 nights at Casa Muntean and it was very good. The food was the best and most real romanian food in my whole trip to Romania. The day trip around the sights of Maramures region was the best guided tour I ever had. Florin also drove me to Suceava for a very good price.

Family-run B&B with excellent home cooked meals available (Breakfast included, dinners can be added and include homemade tuica). Very clean and comfortable. Rooms have wireless internet, shared toilet/shower, quiet paved road access (DJ186). Excellent location to explore surrounding attractions - Memorial to the Victims of Communism and the Cimitirul Vesel (Merry Cemetary) are must sees. Excellent value. Pleasant common dining room with patio. Easy to find if arriving by car, right on DJ186 (well-marked, but not heavily travelled). Wonderful host family.

We stayed at Casa Muntean for 2 nights, and the owner, Florian Muntean provided us with a guided day in the area. He took us to the Prison museum, the museum of Folk LIfe (a village of original Maramures homes) as well as many small villages and of course the traditional wooden churches.
We also spent a couple hours at the Merry Cemetery, a must-see if you are in Sighet area. I also would mention that it is a simple, short border crossing on foot to Ukraine. Florian's wife worked hard to provide 2 beautiful dinners and breakfasts for us as well. Bathroom is shared and that is a bit of a drag, and investing in some new towels would be a good idea, but all in all, our experience was plenty adequate and pleasent.

We had a fantastic two nights staying at Casa Muntean, and would throughly recommend it. Maramures is a wonderful region which should be visited if you are travelling Romania, and Casan Muntean is a perfect place from which to explore. The whole family are warm, welcoming, and extremely helpful, and the home cooked food is delicious - a must if you are staying there!
