Last September (2012), my husband and I took an 1800 mile driving tour of Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and Germany. My husband had spent 13 years in Germany while in the US Army, and he had made about 9 trips back since retirement. He had not been to Europe since 1999, and I had never been. One of the places we had made reservations for on the internet was Gastehaus Sagfeiler. We had originally planned on a two day stay. but we both fell so much in love with the place, that we cancelled a planned two day trip through Northern Italy and extended our stay to four days before moving on to Garmisch. This was my husband's eighth trip to the Berchtesgaden/Bischofswiesen area.
We fell in love with the place for many reasons. First and foremost was Frau Michaela Koeppl, the hostess. She is truly into making her guests comfortable and treats them like family. She even did a load of laundry for me and refused to take any money for this. She has about 27 years experience in the hospitality business, and she is just wonderful.
The rooms are very comfortable, and come with a balcony, bathroom, flat panel TV and WiFi access. They also come with an optional breakfast, which anyone would be crazy to bypass. And all this for about USD 75.00 per night for a double room.
The view is breathtaking with a large meadow spread out before a number of snow capped mountains. The meadow has cows with traditional cow bells, and two beautiful horses named Peter and Paul. The first time I saw the view from Sagfeiler I commented that this must be what heaven looks like. Sagfeiler is a little bit isolated, so are car is almost necessary, but this isolation adds to the quiet and serenity.
We liked Sagfeiler so much that we have reservations to go back for 14 days this September (2013). This time there will be no 1800 miles of driving. We will stay with Frau Koeppl and make day tripls brom Bischofswiesen.
