“A German Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2008

What a gem! My wife and I could not have asked for a nicer place to stay during part of our honeymoon. The Mosel-Landhaus is now right at the top of our overseas lodging experiences. Our hosts--the owners--Jan and Sylvia could not have been more congenial, accomodating, attentive, and warm. What a lovely experience.

The Mosel-Landhaus has been their main project for about a half dozen years after Jan took an early retirement from a career in Holland. Sylvia, his lovely wife, is German. Together they have upgraded and remodeled an architecturally interesting and established property along the tranquil and beautiful Mosel. The property sits in the heart of the very tidy and quiet village of Briedern, not far upriver from Colchem, a delightful destination for many Dutch and Scandinavian tourists, and which we enjoyed. Together Jan and Sylvia have created a charming, well-equipped, comfortable and romantic bed-and-breakfast inn, having redone seven rooms, each in a unique decor. Now they're working on their final one--the eighth. Our blue suite was delightful and very roomy, overlooking the Mosel River.

When we arrived, Sylvia was ready for us with an unusual and very tasty cocktail made from peach brandy and a local sparkling wine, served to us on the Mosel-Landhaus patio overlooking the river. Wow! What a nice introduction. She sat down with us and gave us a rundown on the inn, as well as some suggestions for local sightseeing and restaurants. Husband Jan, an indefatigably cheerful and hospitable innkeeper, introduced himself and addressed us by our first names...we really did feel at home immediately, just as if we were visiting family. What a refreshing and thoroughly wonderful experience. As another couple has already reported here, do not miss the wine tasting in the evening--great selection of local vintage and both Jan and Sylvia are very knowledgeable. Very, very personal service all the way around.

Breakfast was simply the best we had in our two weeks in Germany. Sylvia took our order the night before and asked us what time we'd like to eat. In the morning it was ready, table set, juice and coffee poured, at the appointed nine o'clock on the dot. The eggs were wonderful, great local sausage, bacon, an array of rolls, pastries and breads, cereals, local creamery butter, marmelades, fruit--the juices were excellent, as was the coffee. We could not have asked for more. All home cooked. What a delight.

So, in summary, we could not have been more pleased. We can recommend the Mosel-Landhaus unconditionally, and already have to friends in Germany, France, and the U.S. The attention to detail and personal treatment was wonderful--a few weeks before we arrived, we received a nice welcoming email, and about a week after we got home, we received a nice email with several pictures that Jan and Sylvia had taken as we left on the steps of the inn. A very nice and sincere touch.

Perhaps the best endorsement that we can give is that, in the end, we feel as if we made two new friends, and look forward to another visit when we're back in that part of Europe. Finally, we both are experienced travelers, both together and independently, having traveled extensively in Europe and Asia, typically multiple times per year, and from that perspective, this place is a real standout--in truth one of those undiscovered real gems, which, selfishly, we hesitate to publicize too much! Call or email them. You won't regret it!

My husband and I are wine lovers and selected this location as a central place to tour the Mosel River Region.

What a pleasant surprise it was to arrive at this river-side inn with its welcoming facade. The hosts, Dutch-business-people-turned-inn-keepers, treated us like family. They couldn't have done more to make us feel at home and to recommend restaurants, cafes and places of interest.

Our room was amazing and just remodeled. We had a direct view of the mosel river, which made for a romantic experience. Linens were white and pale yellow and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was brand new with a huge corner shower and all new fixtures. We felt very pampered.

The breakfast, which was included with our stay, offered the best that Mosel has to offer. The scambled eggs cooked in salty butter with home-grown fine herbs were the best I've ever had. The plates of cheeses and regional meats, the incredible bread, the velvety yogurt and the great coffee were the perfect start to perfect days.

On our last day at the inn, the owners invited us to a wine tasting in the inn's cellar. What a treat! Make sure you do this tasting as it was a great time and the perfect place to learn about German wines.

We highly recommend the inn to anyone who wants to feel pampered and who wants to leave Mosel feeling like they've stayed with family. The hosts, Silvia and Jan are experts at attention to details.
