“worst 3 star in ten years”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

i should have suspected all the positive articles on the web to be too good to be true. the chef massimiliano alajmo is handsome but the good news stop there. the reality is that it is in a strip mall and no one dares mentioning this fact. the food is decent for a one star but not for a three star and certainly not at the ridiculous price that they charge. in italy you can have better food than this at a fraction of what they are charging.

“michelin stars with personality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

besides the well earned michelin stars the restaurant has personality, never cold or distant, they make you feel at home and confortable evenv if you don't want to spend hundreds of euro

“Love joy& fun - w/a strong dose of compentency”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

As a former culinary tour guide, I've been visiting Le Calandre since 2000. This was my first experience there in wintertime. It is well worth it to visit their shop in. gredienti for a few gifts prior to a meal, then stop off for some chocolates in il Calandrino. When you order dinner, Angelo the wine steward is there to work w/you and explain his choices. He even gifted me a fotocopy of how the Alajmo Pinot Noir is made and showed me where it was produced on the map. Also he will remember your choices & prefereces of a few years back. Massimiliano exudes good cheer and is always personable. What an artist - I especially loved the mini film which is brought to your table over dessert and features artwork of his 5 year old and his hands making the chocolates! My dinner consisted of: piedmontese beef, raw w/cream of sea trufffles (yum), tiny sea scallops w/celery foam, ricotta and smoked squash in broth, risotto w/caviar and sole, lamb chops in alghe sauce, pigeon w/wild blackberry sauce fried polenta and pate, roasted sardines w/wild celery and chocolates. Portions are on the small side which is just right and the attentiveness of staff perfect w/o hovering. I always leave w/a smile.

“Utterly exceptional experience...but”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2011

We had lunch at Le Calandrino, dinner at Le Calandre and stayed at their hotel Il Maccaroni.

Dinner was amazing. We had the classic tasting menu and I was intrigued and amazed by it. The ravioli filled with porcini juice which exploded in your mouth was perhaps my favourite of all. A couple of buts! Firstly the wine pairing was not only expensive at 95 euros a person but had 5 rather mundane choices (the highlight was a Zenato Amarone that I can buy in Canada!). We chose by the bottle instead. The wine list comes on an iPad of course but there are no descriptions there (chance missed) and I could have done with more direction to find something as remarkable as the food.
My other big gripe is they charged 5 euros for a single espresso at the end. No utterly exquisite little amaretti or biscotti with it, before you ask! Just the coffee. 10 euros for 2 coffees. Pity. That smacks of gouging unnecessarily.
But it was an amazing experience for sure!
