Description: Il Calandrino is a casual version of Le Calandre, the Alajmo brothers three Michelin star restaurant. It is located directly in front of Le Calandre and serves excellent modern Italian food. Great wine and cocktails as well. And in the back corner of Il Calandrino, there is a small pastry shop selling delicious cakes, cookies and small pastries.

“Funny, fresh and good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

We have been there 'cos we knew that Calandrino belongs to Alajmo's family, and the main next door restaurant was unfortunatly closed that day!
As good americans, what can we go for?
Big Max, of course! We found it very funny, that a chef like Massimiliano can decide to make a dish like that! This is a very good and fresh way to make an hamburger, and maybe we should send the Mcdonalds here to learn something about sandwiches!!!!!
My husband went for the pizza, and even if we have to wait for it we found it very good!!!!!
We recommend it, the atmosphere was lovely and the service was very efficient.

“Service, what service...?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2011

This restaurant belongs to the Alajmo clan, which also manages the "La Montecchia" Restaurant (one Michelin star) and the "Calandre" restaurant (three Michelin stars).

La Montecchia is an absolutely outstanding restaurant with incredible food, a wine list that literally bowls you over and service that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. A totally incredible experience and well worth a detour on whatever route you are travelling.

Based on the great experience we had had there in October 2010, we returned this summer. Once again it was devastatingly outstanding - there are no other words for it !

Obviously, we thought that a sister-establishment would be equally good - you know, same management, same outlook on the culinary experience, same focus on customer service etc. So the next day we are off to "Il Calandrino", the light version of "Calandre" and situated right next door (same staff, same kitchen ... we assume).

Well, if the "La Montecchia" is the Everest of the total restaurant experience, then "Il Calandrino" can only be described as the "Marianas trench". Talk about a total disappointment. Good quality food, but vastly over-priced. Nothing to write home about. Wine was ok, but again massively over-priced (twice the price of the same bottle at the "Antica Trattoria" in the Colli Euganei). But the absolute killer was the customer service or the total lack thereof. Rarely have we felt that we were being asked to leave EUR 200 on the table for a light lunch, but if we could hurry and leave it would be even better. If that is the Alajmo ideal for service, then sorry but pack your bags and go home !

The worst of it was that the Padrino of the Alajmo clan was there at "Il Calandrino", but he was more pre-occupied with reading his newspaper at the bar than he was ensuring that his customers got great service and true value for money.

Italians need to understand that in the current economic mess in which they find themselves, they cannot afford to screw around with big-spending tourists. We have plenty of choice out there and ultimately the choice to go elsewhere.

Alajmo : what you have built at "La Montecchia" is incredible, but "Il Calandrino" is sub-par. A word of advice - on this basis you should not market an Alajmo brand that includes "Il Calandrino". Don't pretend to offer an all-encompassing experience at every restaurant that you run.

“Not good at all”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2011

I went to il calandrino about 3 weeks ago with my gilfriend . I new that it was not going to be like Like LE Calandre next door from the firs moment because i read about it a lot ,but i was expecting a little better for such a renown chef Masimilianno. This restaurant is in a horrible location ,We booked from a few days before , and still they wanted to sit us in the worst table after talking to a wayter he took us to a better place , One of the wayters was tryng to be funny with me and i found him really annoing like the kind of service that is not been look after at all. The we went to the big classic menu ,and apart from one dish i found the food nothing speciall at all, complitly out of season and really expensive. But the worst of course was one of the wayter that was being funny with me for no reason. We came from Vennice Specially to eat at Il Calandrino, And maybe another time try the 3 stars next door . Now i really dont want to come back to any of them.
