“Lovely beach getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This backpackers was absolutely beautiful (inside and out). The rooms were clean and beds were comfy. It was great that all linens were provided with the room fee. We booked an awesome, and very cheap, day trip to cape reinga through them. They picked us up at the lodge and dropped us back off as well. The lodge is right on the beach and the area is not stuffed with tourists or shops. The ultimate relaxation. My only complaint is that we brought our food into our room and the next evening the wall and food was covered in ants. Anna was great though and vacuumed them all up and sprayed our room. They were all gone after that, but I would advise future travellers to not keep food in the room. Thanks for a great weekend!

Great house, great people and I felt great because of it. Stayed 3 nights. Very relaxing atmosphere and great location across from beach and great surfing at Shipwreck Bay. Best to have a car because it is a bt out of town and that is part of the charm. Bring your own food and drinks and use the great kitchen, grill and dining areas.

Hello Tim, thank you for your great comments. I believe it is the people who create the atmosphere and you definitely did that. We enjoyed your company, your happiness and music. Keep up the surfing. Cheers anna

I only spent one night here but I could have stayed far longer.

The owner(?) is incredibly friendly, and the house is beautiful. There's plenty of space to lie around in hammocks in the front garden and an amazing outside table in the back garden covered in grape vines where every one gets together to eat.

Ahipara is a little town on the coast, it's not east to get to without a car but it's well worth the trouble.

Absolutely fantastic lodge/backpackers.
Dorm rooms are large, high ceilings and airey, tons of room. There are private double-twin rooms upstairs too.
There are 4 loos and 4 showers, maybe another has been added since a previous review stating not enough. When I stayed the lodge was full on many nights and I didn't have to wait or queue for loo or shower.
The house is spotlessly clean too, with a big kitchen with everything you could want - including a dishwasher and cake tins....
The whole place is so chilled and relaxing, wander over to the beach, relax in a hammock , escape the heat on the vine covered back deck or flop onto a sofa in the lounge, collect mussels, have a BBQ,have a beer on the verandah in the evening sun.....oh, so much to do !
Anna and Blaine - the owners are such a friendly helpful couple and they also make sure that after 10pm the rest of the house is not disturbed by and groups chatting away sitting out on the back deck .
The only downside was there was so much great music playing I needed the playlist for all of it !

This is definitely the best backpackers I have ever stayed in. It's a beautiful old villa, well maintained, very clean, good sized rooms and very comfortable bed. We only had two nights there but wished we could have stayed longer, it was lovely to wake up and hear the waves lapping on the beach and be able to walk two minutes to the beach. The garden is lovely with hammocks and places to sit in the sun or the shade and a nice communal outside eating area under a grapevine. We did have to queue for a shower but we were there at a peak time. The only downside was when guests of the owners decided to sit outside our window and play guitar and talk loudly into the early hours - maybe the owners could consider a curfew or maybe we are just too old?!

I stayed there for 3 nights with a friend and couldn't ask for much better. The staff are friendly and helpful, great kitchen facilities and literally across the road from a lovely beach you can get mussels from etc if you feel inclined. The rooms are nice and simple with comfy beds, some shelves, table and even give you a towel which most Backpackers don't. The other people that were staying were also friendly and lovely so we were able to relax in a lovely outdoor area at the back and eat, play games and chat about our NZ experiences and plans sharing knowledge and tips.
The only thing I was unsure of was there being no locks on the bedrooms but once I settled I felt totally safe leaving the room. Good place :-)

This is one of the nicest hostels I have stayed at! It is a beautiful historic building in the area and it has been maintained beautifully and with pride. The rooms are well presented and I would say most have views of the sea. It has table tennis at the front, along with plenty of lovely areas to sit and relax - including an excellently landscaped area out the back - a long dining table sits underneath a romantic grape vine covered trellis - seriously, this is a pretty special hostel! Oh! One more thing - there really is nothing better than going to sleep to the sound of the waves from the beach!

Room Tip: Rooms on the right of the building facing the sea have lovely views - better toward the front of the...
