My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Western Lodge in Creel. The town itself is a backwoods place with some of that sleepy indolence of old-style Mexico, but the hotel is well-run and looks after its guests well. I have just read some of the negative reviews that others have posted on this site and I can only say that that was not my experience. My wife and I had no cause for complaint. We found the staff helpful, the food tasty and the new manager, Salvador, a friendly and considerate host.
Like most visitors to Creel, we arrived on the Copper Canyon train and the hotel mini-bus was there to meet us. Our rooms were spacious and well-equipped. The restaurant served a wide range of dishes for breakfast and for dinner, and the wine list offered lots of choice. We tried one of the restaurants in town for a change and were glad to go back to the hotel restaurant the following night.
There are a lot of hawkers in the town, mostly Mexican Indians, women and children, selling colourful trinkets and bead belts, etc. They were not troublesome. Most times they simply held out their wares without even speaking.
Creel is only a small town and it is quite limited as regards things to do. We enjoyed cycling to the lake for a picnic and the younger generation went horse-riding. We also took a taxi out to the waterfall and found the old taxi-driver a mine of information, though it taxed our amateur Spanish to communicate.
All in all, the Copper Canyon journey was a memorable episode which we are glad we experienced. The variety of landscapes from the train was amazing. We would recommend it.
