“Fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights & 2 days at the hotel. There was nothing more we could have asked for. The food, the ambience, the people : all we're excellent. They were so child friendly that my 4 year old enjoyed so much & went around like the hotel was his grandma's home. The guide & the staff of the hotel were so warm & hospitable...We look forward to going back there, for that amazing food, so traditional & so excuisite. A def recommendation for friends & family.

- fantastic staff who were genuinely warm and personal
- Sarah-Ann was a fantastic hostess
- beautiful, well- maintained pool
- very peaceful, despite being by the road
- free water, tea & soft drinks is a lovely touch. Just one example of how they are not like many top notch hotels which are always trying to rip you off. It is all around excellent value
- great food, especially the traditional lunches served on banana leaves. The mango chutney is especially good. Beware your waistline - they are always generously trying to give you more food and give you extra helpings!
- If there are any negatives it is that it is not really near a huge amount, especially not too many other Chettinad mansions....the main place to see them is 10-15 kms away
- Overall the bangala is excellent and we would highly recommend it

We had a wonderful time in The Bangala, Karaikudi for 2 days. Amazing food and even more amazing hospitality is to be called out. Staff was very attentive but never intrusive to make you uncomfortable. The lady guide we took from the hotel to show us around Karaikudi, who is also a hotel staff member and EA to the owner, was very informative & sweet. Needless to say it was our first experience with a female guide and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The presence of Ms. Meenakshi to oversee personally that her guests are comfortable is greatly appreciated. Overall a wonderful experience, worth all the travel and money spent!!

We had a lovely time at 'The Bangala'. The stay was great, the food was excellent, the staff's customer service was amazing! My mother got injured and fractured her leg. The staff was very helpful in arranging for a wheelchair from the hospital, having her shifted to a ground floor room, arranging for room service (although their policy clearly says there is no room service option).

The food was excellent, not spicy at all and especially suited for kids' tastes. The guide provided to take us around the nearby places of interest was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful too (she stuck around with us for nearly 2 hours while we were at the hospital).

The facilities at the resort were excellent too, especially the swimming pool, reading material, etc. Perhaps some children-focussed activities could make this more child-friendly. Our kids (8 & 5) did start getting bored after a while.

We'd love to go back and also highly recommend this to others planning to go there!

The Bangala is a great place to stay and has every facility one requires, service is impressive, quality delicious food, spacious room and powerful hot shower. The hotel will organise a guide to the mansions, village market etc all very enjoyable. We also watched a cooking demonstration and hope to be able to replicate the recipes back home. No television in room but available on outside balcony where we watched the cricket one evening. We loved the food, the soups were my favourite whilst my husband always seemed to be able to fit a little more dessert in each night however three nights of three to four courses was enough!

we didn't stay at the bangala... but had lunch there! a luxurious (read expensive) lunch! spent the afternoon under a whirring fan, reading a book about the Origin of animals and then left...

they were very sweet people, extremely hospitable. i am starting to believe that all chettiars or people who live in chettinadu and those areas of tamilnadu are just very hospitable and kind... never seen that level of hospitality even at a Taj - which is by far the most hospitable of Indian luxury hotels! its just not forced. almost like they want to be nice to you, and are not being forced by some higher authority!

lunch was lavish - lots! and was decent. this is an old 'men's club' converted into a hotel. unfortunately, very few rooms seem to be part of that old structure. so the new rooms seem like a regular hotel - atleast from inside. yes, they have chosen great furtinure, done the flooring in beautiful green athangudi tiles - they are gorgeous! but you know you wont be staying in an OLD room.. that was something else before it became a room for you. so for me that takes away from the charm of a heritage property!

of course all of this is given that we were staying at a heritage hotel that was all lived in with minimum new constructions at the nearby kanadukathan village... so we had a point of comparison... if we had arrived here directly, maybe we might have loved it too....

the location is fine. at one side of karaikudi... which itself is a tiny town. but there is no view around.. they have a swimming pool and a spa within the premises.

there are a few lanes to walk around... do visit the antiques road... all the objects are quite expensive, but some really pretty stuff. and at times you come across something that you have seen at your grandmother's house ... and it jogs a memory of that! maybe buy a sari from a nearby shop...

walk down the chettiar area of the town... and see all the lovely but shut houses... do ask if you can go and visit the owner's house 10 - 15 mins from the Bangala. its a very well-maintained property, though not as pretty, awe-inspiring as some others in the nearby villages.

do visit the villages around karaikudi to look at their beautiful bungalows - albeit mostly from outside! the famous "shooting bungalow" / periya veedu (big house) at athangudi, is of a size unimaginable - you can step in!

some kms away are a host of temples that were built by the chettiars. these are all clan temples.. but are beautiful. though like any temple in India, ends up being very crowded.

a lovely trip - chettinadu was an eye-opener. normally known for their non-vegetarian food... as vegetarians, we enjoyed - the food and the culture and stories about all the ancestors!
