“A Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2008

I can't enough good things about Club Tapiz. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights during our honeymoon in Oct. 2007, and we had excellent service through and through. One of our favorite features was the (free) wine tastings each night. It gave us a chance to meet the guests--- it doesn't get much better than enjoying wine, cheese, and conversation with travelers from all over the world in front of a crackling fire. The restaurant was good, too-- although there are so many wonderful restaurants in the area that we tried to venture out for many of our meals. The staff helped us to book all of our wine tastings, restaurant reservations, driver, and even a rafting trip. The room was comfortable (great bed) and there were handmade bath products in the bathroom. I would (and already have) recommend this place to friends. Also-- if you are staying here, make sure you do the Tapiz wine tour. They took us around the vineyards in a horse-drawn carriage. An unforgettable experience.

We spent four wonderful days at Club Tapiz and ditto all the positive reviews below. While there is no shortage of activities in the area --- wineries, Mendoza museums, biking, etc --- it was hard to leave the comfort of the inn garden. The restaurant is terrific, and the staff is happy to recommend other great places to eat.
Note you will want your own car. Also note Club Tapiz is not at the Tapiz winery. Make sure you have explicit directions to find the inn, and time your arrival in daylight.

Our experience of Club Tapiz varied from day to day, which might account for the two recent divergent reviews. It depends entirely on who is on duty. At the beginning of the stay, the manager did not seem to have a grip on her job and seemed overwhelmed. Our last night another manager arrived who was very knowledgeable, welcoming and helpful. The place is lovely, and the public rooms are beautifully appointed. The nightly wine tasting is a great way to chat with the other guests. Tapiz was a nice change from the sterile Park Hyatt in Mendoza. On the other hand, our room was quite small and had very little privacy. The room had no windows, but large French doors giving onto a courtyard, which meant that we either opened the curtains and had everyone walking by look in or kept them closed and had no natural light. The maids have a peculiar routine of turning down the bed while you are dinner and leaving the light on and the curtain open.

We ate twice in the restaurant and liked it. There is a great restaurant not too far, Albacin do Sul, where we had a superb lunch. I would skip 1884 Francis Mallman in Mendoza, which is greatly overrated (our Argentine friends agree that it is all hype). The food was nothing special, and it was very expensive by local standards.

  • Liked — Physical charm, intimate size and spectacular views of the Andes
  • Disliked — Service at front desk varied enormously depending on who was on duty.

This was my first booking through i-escape.com and I can now say that this is a great website and way to book. They take a deposit on behalf of the property and the information/reviews/photos on the site are entirely accurate.

We took two rooms of the seven available at Club Tapiz and were very pleased with this lovely little place. As far as I can tell there are not too many choices in the wine region of Mendoza and many people choose to stay at the Park Hyatt in town. We went there for drinks, but it was a very drab hotel (apart from the amazing facade) and it has a horrible casino at the back filled with middle aged smokers!

Club Tapiz rooms are clean and simple with everything you need. For $170 per night you could not ask for more. We usually stay in 5 star hotels and we were completely happy. It's the blanket and sheet bedcovering that I hate, but everything else made up for it.

7 rooms set around a tree and bird-filled courtyard. Gorgeous pool, gorgeous setting, lovely food both in the restaurant and room service. The Tapiz wine tour was the best we did and the complementary evening wine tasting with a huge tray of cheeses and bread was fantastic. The concierge staff will organise everything for you once you arrive, from drivers and wine tours to dinner reservations. You MUST eat at 1884 and also ask about the 15 course (tapas) wine tasting dinner at 743 Bistro This is a chefs house with 4 tables where the food is matched to each wine and your server discusses each course with you for a bargain £20 per head - WOW-AMAZING and a recommendation from Tapiz.

In a Country where the people are naturally friendly and smiling Club Tapiz must have a special recruitment programme to find them so miserable and unhelpful. Physically the hotel is nice but the management and staff are unhelpful and, for an International Hotel, have poor language skills. The Manageress glides about without talking to any of the guests (We were the only people in breakfast when she arrived, ignored us and sat down for hers) something amiss in a small hotel. The restaurant may have been good in the past but now, compared to the others I experienced in Mendoza, it is very ordinary and overpriced.
All in all, it has the stand off nature of many of the large group hotels embodied in a small boutique hotel - quite an achievement.

We had a lovely (though unfortunately too short!) stay at Club Tapiz. The people who work there are wonderful and mellow... the grounds are so pretty and peaceful and the intimacy of staying in an inn with just 7 rooms was really special. We loved sitting by the pool, beside the vineyards and with a view of the mountains. It was such a welcome escape from the city (both B.A. and Mendoza City) to hear nothing more than the birds making a ruckus. We also loved checking out the winery "museum" at Tapiz... they no longer use the enormous (10' in diameter) oak barrels, but it was so fun to see.

I suspect our night at Tapiz was unusual, as it happened to coincide with the Masters of Food and Wine event that was going on in Mendoza at the time. We joined the dinner (which ironically was featuring a chef from Nobu in NYC, which is where we're from) and had a fantastic and somewhat raucous night, laughing and drinking too much wine with the people we met at the dinner. The owner of Tapiz and his wife were there, and they were warm and welcoming.

A delicious breakfast is included in the room rate, as are taxes! I'd recommend travelers request a room looking out on the pool/vineyards... ours only had a window/door to the courtyard so it was a bit dark.

  • Liked — The setting was beautiful.
  • Disliked — The pool needs more chaise lounges! (They could have 14 guests at any time, so more than 4 chaises would be a good idea.)

After a long flight from the States, we made it to Club Tapiz and were pleasantly surprised to find this perfect country inn. The 100+ year old converted farm house, has been excellently re-modeled into 7 large and comfortable rooms. The grounds were blooming with roses and shady trees, and a backyard pool added to the relaxing atmosphere. The best views of all are provided by the gorgeous snow capped Andes Mountains in the distance, which are visible from anywhere on the property.

There is a lovely wine tasting every night at 8pm which gives guests from around the world a chance to meet and mingle while enjoying some of the winery's tasty offerings.

You can still view the winery's old fermentation rooms and it was fascinating to see the huge old oak barrels. It's also a nice idea to take a walk around the actual vineyard and see a close up example of how local vineyards have adapted to the high desert conditions by utilizing water from the Andes mountains to irrigate their fields.

The best part for us about staying at Club Tapiz was the absolute incredible meals we ate at their restaurant. Even if you decide not to stay at this inn, you must experience their food.

Club Tapiz is located outside of the city, but only by a 20 min drive. This gives you a great opportunity to see life in the country and experience the city of Mendoza too.
