We stayed at this hotel for three days. Let me start by saying you really need your own transportation unless you are ok with paying $70 for a cab back and forth to all the tours and activities. We had a honeymoon suite and the inn had only a few guests during our stay. The view and setting is beautiful. The accomodations are more of a western rustic flavor. All in all the staff was very accomodating and treated us very well. It's more of a family run business so many times there was one person present running the show. Our one complaint was that we had dogs barking at 1:00 am every night. The drive to the activities takes around 45 minutes and I would recommend not doing the drive at night. It was a bit freaky even for a guy from Alaska. Given some rain it might even qualify for an adventure tour. Recommendations: Ice cream w/ Belgian chocolate, Canyoning tour, La Fortuna Falls, ATV tour, Brasitas Restaurant.

We had a room overlooking the Lake! Really great with nice chairs under terrace. Rooms are big, but furniture is kitchy and not typical. Beautifull pool (cold :-/) and jacuzzi. We had bad luck with the weather but this must be great with clear weather so you can see the volcan. Food is really very good. Nice staff (Belgian beers).

My wife and I stayed at this wonderful place after leaving Palo Verde Resort which did not met our expectations. We were driving and had no problems with driving in Costa Rico. The auto was nice as we traveled around this area and saw howler monkeys (don't get too close as they throw feces and urine at you) and a nice stream by the volcano on a rural road. This was the nicest place that we stayed in Costa Rico!! I would not stay anywhere else if you like to drink, eat, lounge in a small but nice pool and hear nothing but birds and monkeys howling in the distant trees. It is not for the budget traveler!

We stayed at La Mansion Arenal for seven nights (January 10 through 17). We absolutely loved it! Our cottage was lovely and comfortable with a stunning lake view. The breakfasts each morning (included in the room price) were spectacular with an extensive menu to choose from. The hotel staff (especially the manager Joey) were extremely friendly, helpful, and informative. Joey scheduled all of our daily activities and made great recommondations for places to see and restaurants to visit. The new (and very large) outdoor hot tub overlooking the lake is great. The only drawback to this hotel is the distance to the nearest towns (Nuevo Arenal is 20 minutes, La Fortuna is 40 minutes). We rented an SUV, and highly recommend doing so. Here are activities/restaurants we highly recommend:

1. Hiking by Arenal Volcano (no need for a tour, you can get a map of hiking trails at the entrance to the park)
2. White water rafting at Rio Toro (class 3/4 rapids). We used Wave Expeditions and they were very nice
3. Day trip to Selva Leona rain forest (available exclusively through La Mansion) - one of the highlights of our trip!
4. Gingerbread restaurant (between hotel and Nuevo Arenal) - one of the best meals we've eaten anywhere in the world - the owner only seats a few tables each evening so he can give all guests his personal attention (will be reviewed in Conde Nast soon, so secret will be out of the bag)
5. Joey recommended EcoThermal Hot Springs as opposed to the very crowded Tabacon. We enjoyed Eco Thermal very much.

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor - we decided to go to this hotel for our recent trip to Costa Rica. We were in CR for 6 nights, and spent all 6 nights at La Mansion Arenal. We LOVED it there - the decor was darling, the views spectacular, the food outstanding (GREAT breakfasts!), and the staff was unbelievable. Joey especially was the BEST - we traded MANY emails during the months leading up to the trip - and he never seemed tired of my many questions. He set up all the activities we discussed - and his arrangements were perfect.

There are two downsides to this hotel: (1)the location - it's a bit off the main path, so you spend extra time getting back to La Fortuna (40 minutes each way) for many of the activities. We had a driver (arranged by the hotel) which worked perfectly for us (it did cost us $130/day, but he was with us the whole time), or you could rent a car. The road to/from La Fortuna is fine to drive - you can't get lost on this road. It just does take time.

And (2) you can't see the volcano from the hotel, so we never got to see the early AM "best views" that the travel brochures boast of. We did get to see it a few evenings, so we were fine with that.

Even given these two issues, I'd still give the hotel a 5* rating - it was so nice to be there. It's so small you get treated like you are one of the family while being there. We loved it! AND - the hotel is building a large jacuzzi that will look out over the lake - it was almost done when we were there - would have been spectacular!

FYI - our activities included (5 days) - all set up by Joey:
Day 1 - horseback riding at the hotel, evening tour at the Arenal Hanging Bridges
Day 2 - full day trip to Monteverde Cloud Forest
Day 3 - almost full day trip to Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge; hike to La Fortuna Waterfalls; Eco Thermales Hot Springs in evening/dinner at that location
Day 4 - daytime self-guided tour at Arenal Hanging Bridges; lunch in La Fortuna; late afternoon hike at Arenal Volcano (with tour group); dinner at Volcano Lodge
Day 5 - white water rafting; back to hotel around 2:30 for afternoon at the pool

We stayed at La Mansion Inn, Arenal for 3 nights in June and absolutely loved it. The grounds are beautiful, the staff warm and helpful, and the cottages great. The breakfasts were the best and looked forward to it every morning! Would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing getaway. The only down side for some would be that it is a good distance from La Fortunua so requires a 30 minute or so drive anytime going to town. The roads were really not as bad as we had read either.

My husband and I stayed here at the insistence of friends who had been before. We were debating staying at Tabacon and were sooo glad we did not - La Mansion is simply indescribable in words. When we arrived for the beautiful sunset, there were horses grazing in the distance in the front of the plunge pool and by the lake. Simply breathtaking. The food was outstanding, though, as others stated, very pricey for CR standards. The service was phenomenal - Joey takes care of you and hooks it up! If you're looking for pure romance at an affordable price, definitely stay here!! If we ever go back to CR again, there is no question that this is where we will stay.
