“Wonderful,Hospitable Place To Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2010

We live in Santa Ana, Costa Rica and this was our first "sightseeing adventure" to the "other side" of Costa Rica.It was to celebrate the 21st birthday of our grandson and his college roommate. So there were 4 of us in a lovely 2 bedroom cottage suite (#21) overlooking the beautiful Lake Arenal.Leo and his lovely daughter Peggy from belgium are the people in charge here and they just treat you like family. They go out of their way to assure your every comfort. They can arrange your tours, such as the bass fishing on Lake Arenal, trips to the volcano, etc. They prepare wonderful gourmet meals for you at breakfast and dinner, and for us, even prepared and cooked the bass that our grandson and friend caught on their fishing trip, as a "pre-empt to our dinner meal that evening.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a homey, comfortable place to stay while visiting in Arenal. We certainly look forward to returning there ourselves at the first opportunity.

Luxurious hotel wth a beautiful view of the lake - not of the volcano - with comfortable rooms but what a dissapointment to have to pay extra for the "non-continental breakfast". A bare breakfast is included (toast and jam) but all the others such as the local fruit, eggs, pancakes, etc. are charged separately which increased our room fee of $ 200 a night by about $ 15 - 20 per day. It is not so much the actual costs as the thought behind it. In a hotel of this quality, charging extra for breakfast doesn't seem right.
We also thought the Belgian owner, quite moody at times, was very keen to sell his expensive Monteverde trip (horseback tour and hike $ 125 per person) and did not seem amused when we kindly declined.
These few details did affect our overall rating. Would we recommend it....yes, but think twice before booking trips you might not be in the mood for and be prepared to pay a lot of extra's if you are in the mood for Costa Rican fruits for breakfast.
And do bring an umbrella!

Love this very unique property. Great view of the lake , awesome sunsets, beautiful gardens and charming villas. Family owned, service is the #1 priority. Meals were excellent. This is not an ordinary hotel. It is one of a kind with a certain european rural charm. We took day excusions from the hotel to the volcano, hot springs, rafting etc. and although it takes a bit of time to get to your excursion (30 - 40 minutes) the ride is filled with exciting sites and vistas. We really enjoyed our stay and would reccomend it for travelers going to the Arenal area.

The view from our chalet was breathtaking. It was like looking out on an isolated Scottish Loch........ only with humming birds and lush tropical vegetation.

However, the place was badly let down by the food. On the first night (the only night we ate there) they had run out of deserts. For breakfast the following morning, there were no banana pancakes (they were out of bananas), no breakfast sausage (whatever that is) and they had run out of chorizo. How they managed to run out of local produce is a mystery. The waitresses did their best and were sweet, but perching themselves on a serving trolly is not good. We got the impression that the owners were free-wheeling and there was a lack of management. The fridge in our room was ON…..but bare. No milk, no water. Plus the hot water was intermittent. I worked out that I had to run the tap in the bathroom for the boiler to ignite, so we could fill the jacuzzi

The lack of cuisine in some respects was a blessing in disguise as this forced us to eat out in La Fortuna where there were plenty good places to eat.

Previous writers proclaim the fine dinning. Well, I am astonished. We werent expecting London dinning, but local food, well prepared would have been great....which is exactly what we found in a number of restaurants in La Fortuna.

There is another factor to bear in mind. La Mansion is around 40 Minutes drive from La Fortuna. If you havent rented a car, then you need to get a taxi which is $40.00 each way. Comming from London, this is still cheap, but should be factored in for those considering visiting this place as it begins to add up.

But its the tranquility and the view where this place wins. If they raised thier game on the food front, it would improve the experiance hugely.

We spent 4 nights at La Mansion Inn including New Years Eve. This place is so beautiful. The view of the lake, flowers and birds still linger in my mind. We had a great New Years Eve dinner along with fireworks and champagne! The location is pretty far away from La Fortuna and Arenal volcano but once you get there it is heaven on earth! Leo and Peggy were also very helpful and the staff was sweet and accomodating. The breakfast was the best! Our room was perfect for a family of 4. I would love to go back someday!

I spent one night at La Mansion Inn during a trip to Costa Rica with my mother and sister. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer! The setting is amazingly beautiful, the cottages were clean, spacious, and very comfortable, and the service was extremely friendly. All in all, it was a fabulous stay!
We stayed in a cottage with two bedrooms - it had a large master bedroom with a sitting area, bookshelves filled with books, a fireplace and a flatscreen tv (not that you will want to watch it while you're there!). There was a separate bedroom with two twin beds. A large bathroom separated the bedrooms, and there was also a large jacuzzi tub in the front of the cottage, facing the lake. There was a very nice front porch with rocking chairs and a table that faced the lake, with views of horses grazing nearby. The scenery was stunning!
The hotel has a pool, and a large, heated hot tub, also facing the lake. The restaurant is small but very nice, and we had a wonderful dinner. It was my mother's birthday, and they went out of their way to make the dinner special for her.
If you are in the Arenal area, I highly recommend this hotel. It was a little slice of heaven!

The hotel really is gorgeous with beautiful views of the Arenal volcano and lake. The staff was super friendly and in the non busy season everything was very reasonably priced. However, we did not rent a car and ended up spending quite a bit of time traveling in a taxi van (the hotel itself is about 45 minutes from La Fortuna where most of the trips leave from). I would definitely only go back if I rented a car, but other than that this hotel is a really great place to stay.
