“friendly, very scenic, great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Our family (3 people) chose this hotel based on other positive reviews - we were not disappointed! This multi-level hillside establishment has great views (makes one say Wow!) across a quiet road of a large natural bay with mountains coming down to the water. There is ample parking in a gravel lot on the other side of the road. Attractive flowered gardens on terraces lead up the steps to the entrance. Our simply-furnished room had cooking facilities (not used by us) and was reasonably spacious as well as clean and very comfortable. It had a small but delightful veranda to watch the ocean at sunset and afterward the starlit sky. The staff were very friendly and breakfast (optional extra) was very pleasant and excellent value. It is a few kilometers to the town, so a car (or lots of energy) is probably essential for a stay here.

Location
On the edge of town but only about 5-10 minutes walk from the centre. Taxi recommended if arriving by bus: the hill up to the hotel is very steep. There is a taxi rank in town. Care needed on the busy road outside the hotel.

Accessibility
No ground floor rooms that I'm aware of

Rooms
The rooms are enormous. They are spotlessly clean and furnished more imaginatively than is often the case in modern hotels. Simple self-catering facilities are included. Bathrooms are also a good size. So far as I could tell all rooms have sea facing balconies with unobstructed, spectacular views. The hotel is very new so do be aware there are a few rough edges and oddities but nothing major and these will no doubt disappear gradually

Food
Breakfast is simple but good quality: fried egg, ham, cheese, bread, cake and jam

Noise
Not an issue. The balcony doors cut off traffic noise very effectively

Parking
Small car park opposite the hotel. Given the size of the hotel this could run out of space in high season.

We had a wonderful room with a view of the whole coast. The room was big, new, modern and spotless (always the first priority). We had breakfast included and the food was delicious. The young man, George, who served us was polite, knowledgeable and friendly. The overall experience was very positive.

Room Tip: There is no wifi in the rooms- only in the outdoor spaces. Be careful when crossing the street- the...

Entering Pylos from the coast you come across the Philip hotel which has an excellent view, good price for what it has to offer, and very nice rooms which have been looked upon in great detail. Very nice beds, good kitchen and very nice bathrooms. When we saw it, it was a wow at first. We stayed there on the 9th and 10th of August. When we arrived the owner who was busy on his laptop did not even greet us most probably because we were not driving an expensive car or perhaps because we were only going to stay for a couple of days. On the other hand his wife was more friendly. I didn't care though but wasn't suspicious of what was to come. The next morning we had breakfast where they only asked us what we would like to eat no one cared about our son he would eat from our food but luckily he got his own juice. We were never asked what we would like to eat but the other guests got a choice or made requests even though there was no menu and the food was dumped on our table by an old lady who was doing her best to serve the 8 guests. The next morning my wife tried to open the balcony door and the door knob broke. My wife was so upset that she started crying and when she told the owner what had happened he replied go to the beach and we will repair it before you come back. My wife asked at that moment until what time breakfast is served and the reply was well its too late know lets go and see the door handle and it was still 10:15 and breakfast ends at 10:30. After they repaired it we got ready to leave the next day and when i went to pay the bill the owners wife requested an extra 10 euros for the handle i laughed and said for sure no problem even though i find this very unprofessional and that we didn't try to open the door with a hammer. The reply was what would happen if everyone who comes to stay here breaks something xaxa what could i say shes right if an earthquake happens and we are in the room well pay no problem. We left very upset as it was not the extra 10 euros which was less than 5% of the total room 2 days cost but the mentality in a country which has currently got many difficulties and some people just seem to ignore and not take care of their guests respectively of who they are. The unfortunate part of this whole experience is that my wife is from Pylos and we were planning to back there next year for longer holidays as we were driving through this year but this cannot happen here. What else can I say the choice is yours maybe we are just difficult people and have high expectations when we pay.

Room Tip: rooms 106 and 107 have a roof over the balcony allowing more time to spend on the balcony with less...

This is a nice hotel with newly designed rooms, featuring balconies overlooking Pylos and the sea. Breakfast is a highlight for the location. Only negative is the busy road outside, that can get dangerous, specially if you have to cross it twice a day to get to your parked car.

The port of Pylos sits in a tranquil bay facing the island of Sfaktiria with its storied history. Overlooking this lovely bay and set up high over the water is the elegant, boutique Hotel Philip. Each room has a large balcony facing the bay. How pleasant to sit and watch the sun set with a glass of ouzo from the little bar downstairs! Until very late, you can also enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by the chef/owner and served by his wife (a high school teacher who speaks excellent English and who possesses expansive historical knowledge) or by his equally charming daughter. Sitting outside and facing the water while enjoying local produce, specialties of the region, and fish provide the perfect Greek experience. Young people can rent a boat, go snorkeling, and visit the exquisite local beaches, e.g. Voidikilia, and the archaeological minded can head to the spectacular site of ancient Messini, hardly done proper justice in the guidebooks. The rooms of the hotel are clean and elegant with nice bathrooms. This is a gem of a small hotel with all the comforts of a fancy 5-star hotel but with much more charm and interest.
