“Kouri-jima Island Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014

Kouri-jima is a small island off the north coast of the island of Okinawa in Japan. Bridges connect it to the main island by way of Yagaji island. We spent a pleasant afternoon snorkeling at a beach located on the north side of the island.

Several vendors supply snorkeling equipment and showers in the beach area that we visited on Kouri-jima. The one that we chose was small, but well-equipped with four clean showers. It also sold snacks and rented snorkeling gear.

The beach that we chose was nestled and protected between two rock outcrops. The coral was located just a short distance offshore in shallow and crystal-clear water. The large variety of colorful fish entertained us for several hours.

If you visit the beach on Kouri-jima, be prepared with sunscreen, snorkeling gear, and a sun tent, if possible. The summer sun in Okinawa is intense and can quickly burn the skin. Being well-prepared will help you enjoy your visit.

This island is a must-go place.
Especially summer time to enjoy its local atomosphere...well time goes so slow and good for a vacation.

Kouri island is known for sea urchin, which is edible in summer and can taste its rich flavour, urchin is famous for one of sushi rolls, the orange egg stuff rolled with nori weed around rice.

When you turn left (coming from Naha) at Yagaji island crossing(there's Family mart convenience store around the corner and can't miss it), just go straight, reading road sign, you will drive on Kouri ohashi bridge...amazing view when it's sunny.
Enjoy the breath-taking view on bridge. Blue ocean with turquoised spots are really addictive.
Just be carfull that you cannot park your car on bridge in Japan due to illegal action it is. Many visitors do so, but please respect local rules and manner.
This island has been made as a tourist site slowly, but most of residents are farmers, so drive slow when on island.
You may wanna go to the highest spot of this island, where a small 270 degrees view is available. it's kind of hard to explain since it's very localizd area and therer're few signs to get there. But you'll love the scenic very much.

Nice calm ocean and beach.

Enjoy your journey, have fun!!

“There was a horse in the road.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

While taking a quick drive around the island there was a horse in the road. It didn't move. This signified what a wild place this island is! We could drive around the island in about 20 minutes easily, but it did seem like the kind of place you could spend a bit of time hiking around and maybe even finding some beautiful beach areas away from the bridge.

“Great Place to Spend a Day Exploring”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

A little off the beaten path but, well worth the drive to visit, I've gone to Kouri-jima a few times over the past few months. Away from the hustle and bustle ofn the main island of Okinawa, it's easy to access by bridge and lots cheaper than depending on a ferry. There are historical and religious sites to see and plenty of nature to observe. I found the staff in the community center to be very helpful and they allowed me to take photos of the artworks hanging on the walls. Anyone exploring the side roads and rocky beaches should wear sturdy shoes, as there are some slippery trails and sharp, coral cliffs along parts of the shore. A great place with lots of scenery, a camera is recommended. It's easy to spend a half day, or more visiting this small island. Most of the places for food or refreshments are close to the causeway, as you enter the island so, it's best to stock up there, as you won't find any convenience stores as you travel other places around the island.
