“Not quite”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2015

Similar to a lot of buildings in Andorra - built into the hillside so on various levels. Having said that there is a lift but only to two flights of external steps below the reception. The info pack does warn about steepness etc. so no surprise and we were fortunate to have an apartment on the same level as the reception. But.... the two flights up were constantly ice covered and there only seemed to be one man, with very basic equipment, to clean the snow and there was no gritting of any sort. The apartments went on for another few floors so I don't know what one does then!
The apartment itself was very clean and well kept during our stay. Internet was excellent (but extra). All specified equipment was there except the radio/CD player and the hob was so slow that it really was useless. We left a small pan of water on full blast just to test and after 30 minutes it still hadn't boiled! Accommodation was small, we were only two adults in an apartment for four, which would have been very, very cramped. Noise from adjoining apartments was also a bit of an issue with water, waste and bodily fluids easily audible through the walls.
We had a car so could drive to the lifts which are close but far enough down a steep slope if you are walking in ski gear. On site facilities are limited to a restaurant which was under new management and average at best but perhaps it will pick up once things settle down. There is a good selection of other restaurants within 10/15 minutes but do beware of the Andorran habit of sprinkling rock salt on red meat just before they serve it. Takes the edge of a good steak!!

Room Tip: Stay low down unless you are travelling very light of like a good stomp up the steps.

We found this by trial and error, which added to the exploration feel of our holiday. We were skiing at Grau Roig which is about a 15 minute drive. The rooms are basic (these are not hotel rooms) but do the job, i.e. kitchen, dining room etc. Data roaming doesn't seem to work for UK based mobiles so if you need internet then be prepared for the 20 euro a week single device Wi-Fi charge. There's a lovely walk into El Tarter itself, about 15 minutes and worth it. The views are great and plenty access to anything you need.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room at the top, as there are lots of families here if there's a room above...

We have just had an awesome stay here. The Manager Marie couldn't do enough for us.Prices for ski lifts and Equipment hire were good from reception. My children 15 and 20 loved the apartment, it was fully equipped so we ha a few cooked meals in.The ski lift is a 10 minute walk down the hill. We drive down early and got great parking near the lift. Great restaurants were recommended to us by the Manager,Marie. La Sangria was an excellent French fine dining restaurant 5 minute drive away. They do steaks on the open grill and foie gras. The skiing was good, friendly instructors and slopes for all levels.I would recommend this place to anyone.
Thanks Marie you made our stay fantastic,I would steal you away and make you work for me if I could.

We stayed here in Feb 2012 for two nights with our young family. We were impressed with the apartment as it was a good size and well equipped. it was very good value for money. It is far out from the resort so better for self catering families rather than people looking for restaurants and bars. We had a comfortable stay and would return.

Luckily I had read the reviews before we left and printed a couple out to take with us so that we could find the hotel given that it seemed people have found it difficult to locate. The review about the phone box was the most helpful because you basically turn off the main Soldeu - Canillo road when signposted for Ransol (and in fact a roundabout has now been installed at this junction very close to the Food and Drink Emporium) and drive up the hill until you reach a phone box on your right. Park anywhere on the road here and get ready for the very steep hike up to the reception area with your cases! It is right that it is called El Dorado or something similar on a signpost close to this phone box so if you look our for the phone box and this name, you will be ok. We went to Andorra for the walking and in this respect, we had the best holiday ever because it is extremely challenging with excellent reward at the end of each walk - the views and the scenery - not to mention the cheap duty free in the supermarket across the road from Ransol! However, had it been raining, and we were not into walking (and ski-ing in the winter months), this could have been a disaster because although perfectly adequate for the amount of time we stayed in our apartment, the apartment was dull and quite run down with definitely some health and safety question marks! There was no fire escape, smoke alarm, windows, the electrical wiring left a lot to be desired (I got an electric shock from touching one of the lights in the bathroom to reposition it!) the furniture was old and tatty, the fridge tray that sits on the door had a hole in it, some of the doors didn't close properly, etc etc. It just needed some love and attention as it is really quite quaint from the outside and in a great position in terms of getting anywhere. It is a shame the owners have not spent the money on it in our view. We were particularly unlucky because we were in number 2 which didn't have its own terrace / balcony. Instead it just shared a 'walk-way' with other apartments so consequently there was nowhere to have breakfast or have a glass of wine in the evening apart from indoors unless you didn't mind sharing everything with your neighbours and having to make polite conversation all the time! We had fabulous weather and so it would have been nice to make the most of the views that surround this hotel by having our own private terrace where we could sit and relax, rather than have to carry dining room chairs outside to sit on a pavement basically!! People were also right in previous reviews that there was only ever enough hot water for 1 bath so if you are not into sharing bath water, be prepared to have a cold one! The bath was nice and big though - just not enough hot water! Another thing which I had to agree with was the noise coming from other apartments - the screeching of chairs from adjoining apartments etc - so take your ear plugs for the nightime! It was quite cold at night time too although blankets were supplied.
More general tips for Andorra: if you are a serious walker, we would recommend getting GPS and getting the Walk Andorra book by Charles Davis. Walk 1 (Estanys de Tristania) is superb and idyllic - but hard work climbing over rocks a long way up so only do it if you are fit! In terms of eating, we felt the Bonavida Hotel in Canillo offered the best choice with good food at similar prices to other places. Pizza was very good in Hotel Bruxelles in Sondeu and they offer big portions but more 'run of the mill' food - chicken and chips, pasta, pizza, etc, whereas for the same money you probably get something a little more up-market and typical of the region in Bonavida Hotel - but it depends what you want! There is a restaurant (Borda de l'Horto) just down the road from the aparment on the right hand side as you drive towards Canillo which is excellent too but almost a bit too fancy for us! Nothing straight forward like chicken and chips, that is for sure! We were out of season given that their main season runs November - Easter due to ski-ing so we did struggle a little bit for decent restaurants that were open and had more diners than just me and my husband inside! Even the hotel restaurant only opened at lunch time Monday - Friday we believe! Not a lot of good to us wanting a meal in the evening after a day out walking!
Scenery spectacular, people very friendly, and a good country to visit - providing you enjoy walking or ski-ing - just avoid apartment number 2!!
We went through Club la Costa holiday club.

We arrived easily as we had already read the reviews here explaining the wrong name (now corrected, I see) and the exact situation. Just followed the signs behind the first phone box you find on the road to Ransol.
Just 900m from the parking for the gondola. Too much to walk on ski boots, but a minute by car.
When arriving, if you are not booking a parking place, leave your bags in the car, and check in. Then you can take the lift down to the garage, block the door with something, and use the lift. I don't know if you can ask for a key for the pedestrians door, we didn't do this and carried our bags up the stairs. No big deal (though it can be for older people or when carrying luggage for a longer stay).
We had apartment 101. Good views, we could see the gondola and the lights of the Ratracs. Very small, but enough for one night. Well equipped. There were some little toasts, butter, jam, one liter of milk, one liter of orange juice, and a bottle of water (1.5 l), plus coffee and tea bags. You can have a light breakfast without having to buy anything else. There is a big supermarket on the main road, within walking distance, though.
It was clean. The beds were very confortable, the sofa-bed included.
We didn't have any problem with hot water, it was enough for two showers.
The only problem we had was with the heating. It was set up at 35ºC, we corrected it to 20º and opened the french windows for a while, but we still were a little too warm during the night. Maybe we should have left the windows open longer, while we went shopping, but we didn't dare as it was very easy for anybody to get in.
Don't leave your skis or boards on the roof of your car if left outdoors. We met somebody on Sunday that had them stolen during the night. Probably a one off situation and of course it is not a hotel fault, anyway. Use the lift to get them to your apartment, or book a parking place.
Probably the following will not apply to you, but having Catalan as our mother tongue, and travelling to a country where Catalan is the only official language in the country, we were shocked that nobody from the staff spoke it. Same problem in the ski shops, in the ski resort ticket boots, in the bars...
If we go back to El Tarter someday, we will probably book here again (if more than one nigtht, we'll ask for a bigger apartment, though).

This is an RCI resort so the standard of cleaning and care is excellent. The apartments are 700 m up the Ransol road which is close to El Tarter. The directions on many inernet sites are wrong and map locations wrong on the internet sites. The resort is part of the gruphotel chain and their website provides accurate location instructions.

The resort is handy for El Tarter SKI area - around 1 mile from the main free car park at el tartert and gondola.

The biggest drawback is the resort is on a steep hill and contrary to some web sites is not ski in ski out. If you can park on the road outside, there are around 40 steps to climb to the apartment. The apartments are up some steps behind the blue phonebox, but could easily be missed.

We had a one bed apartment for four people. The main bed was fine but the put up bed not very comfortable. The staff were great and helpful, and we would be happy to stay again. The rate for the accommodation was also very good.
