“Could try harder”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Typical 'chain' owned pub with microwaved meals featuring large. Cheap, but not very cheerful with off-hand staff and a 'couldn't care a less' attitude. Useful when other pubs closed i.e mid-afternoon.

“Most amazing value plus good quality food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

We visited the Man at Arms having been recommended by my son's colleagues early last Saturday evening. The choice of meals was extensive although somewhat obscene in offering 48 oz steaks! However, we had a mixed mighty man grill, two steaks and a 16 oz gammon steak which were all cooked to perfection, accompanied by chips, vegetables and salad. We met the criteria for a free bottle of house wine which was a very acceptable French Rose and also had two pints of bitter. The cost in total was £49.40 which to my mind is amazing. The quality of the meat was excellent and although not haute cuisine was exactly what we had ordered. Although very busy, the service was good and food served up hot, which is very important to me. The only very minor negative comment I would make is that the tables are quite snug for four people especially if you are on the large size. It is what it is, a pub serving food with a fairly quick turnover, so no apologies expected!

“Has the potential to be so much more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Visited on Easter Monday with my Mum for a quiet meal, on the recommendation of family who've previously eaten there and at other KHT pubs in the area.

Entering the pub we weren't entirely sure if we should wait to be seated (there are a large number of pubs locally who do this) or find a table ourselves, but opted for the latter as we couldn't see any staff around. The pub was busy as we expected on a Bank Holiday but we found a table easily, in quite pleasant surroundings by the large open fire. Pictures on the website show a very bright, quite modern space, which I don't think was entirely accurate. The lighting was actually very nice, muted and warm but definitely darker than shown online. It was a shame the fire wasn't lit given the current weather but we suspected an extra table had been placed in front of it to accommodate the expected rush. The decor was quite nice but definitely in need of freshening up (chipped, old paintwork) and a good clean (the cobwebs surrounding the suit of armor above the fireplace were quite alarming).

Ordering the food was fairly quick given how busy they were and the bar staff were very friendly and courteous - we were advised that it could take up to 45 minutes for our food to be ready which, again, given how busy they were we felt was okay and it was nice to actually be told in advance. Drinks wise we ordered one soft drink and one cappuccino, being told the latter would be bought to the table. Unfortunately this didn't arrive until our food order was bought out 30 minutes later (pleasantly ahead of schedule!) and we had to request it again. I also had to send my soft drink back as it was totally flat but sadly the replacement was just as bad. It's a real pet peeve of mine that pubs (and they definitely define themselves as a pub, not a restaurant on their menu) continue to serve totally flat, from the pump, soft drinks.

The food was good but not out of this world: I was pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian options available and opted for the veggie fajitas. There was nothing wrong with them per se and the portion size was extremely generous but they were simply "nice". Although I'm not sure that garden peas are a usual fajita ingredient! Mum ordered the gammon, chips and peas and again felt that it was nice but nothing extraordinary. As pub food goes, the choice is certainly broad and it was far, far superior than anything a Wetherspoons or Everards could ever offer up but it just felt lacking somewhat in flavour and finesse.

A few tweaks and this could really elevate itself to a superb place - the atmosphere was nice, music was good and at a perfect volume and staff were great but it definitely feels rough around the edges in terms of decor and the quality of food and drink.

“Interesting comment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013 via mobile

Interesting how the only management feedback is to say how many years they have owned the pub but nothing to say how many managers they have had in that period. Nothing either to say, how many times in the 28 years the owners have actually visited the place themselves. I would have expected to see feedback on the very good and/or the very bad reviews too. Maybe a sign of how the owners as well as the managers view there customers.
A real shame as on a good you can get a VERY good meal at a good price, you just don't know when it will be a good day. Sadly we now go elsewhere
