“Just pumzika”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2015

The name Pumzika, relaxation, describes the hotel perfectly. We have stayed in quite many hotels in Zanzibar but Pumzika is definitely one of our favorites! Makunduchi is a really quiet and peachful village even though there are some nicer (and more crowded) beaches in Zanzibar. We really felt like home in the lovely designed and spacios bungalow. Danielle and Andre are really great hosts. The food was excellent. Andre is creating really unique and tasty meals. We can really recommend this hotel and hope that we will get a chance to come back one day! Matthias and Salla

We spent a week at Pumzika Beach Resort at end of October 2014. Our hosts Danielle and André were absolutely wonderful! Danielle knows everything around Makunduchi and can organize great excursions. She's also both discrete and very attentional, making sure you're always in the most comfortable conditions. André is a very inventive cook (see separate review for restaurant "chez Andri"). The resort is very comfortable and very quiet, only five bungalows (not recommended for families). The beach is nice and we spent half of our time in or around the pool ;-). Altogether, we enjoyed our stay at Pumzika **a lot** and we recommend it highly. We'll certainly come back one day or another.

Room Tip: Bungalow "Le Goyer" has a private terrace with sea view. Quite nice!

After a 10 day safari, this was a paradise to arrive in. Every detail has been thought of- from the mobile phone they hand you so you can call for drinks anywhere on the property, to the room decor, to the property design. The rooms are so comfortable and clean and the pool is just the right temperature and depth. The beach is so close and the food is amazing. Danielle and Andrei have created a wonderful home that they welcome lucky travellers into. We hope to go back someday! Thank you so much for the comfortable and relaxing paradise!

Room Tip: Framboise Up has a view of the ocean!

I will not repeat what the positive reviews have stated, it is all true. The hotel is run by a highly professional Swiss couple who are very committed to make your stay enjoyable- kudos to bother for giving us a great week. There was only one other guest there while we were there, so again more quiet then it would be anyway. Our little one used one of the smaller bungalows while we were upgraded to the deluxe bungalow (definitely a good choice in terms of size although you hardly spend any time in there, I guess)- rooms were nice with plenty of decoration. This is the right place for people seeking silence, piece, togetherness away from the pret-a-porter luxury hotels or whatever. If you are rather up for party time or prefer a 6* private island, you better don´t go. In general, people will leave you alone and if you need anything, just shout (ie use your personal cell that they will give to you). You can eat and drink wherever you want, on your terrace, at the pool, the beach, ... great.
Pumzika is quite remote compared to other places we had been to, every trip will require some car travel (but the island is not too large, so no worries, 60min to AP). The beach was deserted, on some days you could watch the locals working or fishing. They put is some rocks to bury coconut for rope making in the sea but the ´entry´is marked, we did not mind. Few jellyfish, many corals, so bring your bathing shows. Snorkeling was OK but not great. Pool is nice and clean, garden, property, beach all picture perfect (when you walk further up or down the beach you will discover some pollution, not so picture perfect). Every day was a feast in terms of food, expect highest quality, diversity and freshness. We took the bikes and drove to the village. Having been to Africa many times, this was not much of an eye opening but it may be for some.
We felt safe, the resort is sourrounded by walls and there are guards. There is only one hotel close by, so the concept of surrounding walls seems to make sense (otherwhise I would prefer not to have it). Good for younger kids? Depends, our daughter (6) loved it and we loved having the time with her (but it will be pretty much 24/7), may be very boring for older kids (despite the pool and an open air cinema, a library, gym, volley ball).
We had stayed in Zanzibar Retreat in the year before and it is hard to say which one we prefer. Retreat was wonderful, too. Maybe more social since the property is much smaller and more guests- rooms, pool and property are way better at Pumzika, food is great in both places.

We were looking for a quiet and beautiful place to relax for a week by the beach. Pumzika Beach Resort exceeded all our expectations!

The proud owners Danielle & Andre have created an amazingly beautiful oasis of trees and flowers, right by the beach in this remote southern corner of Zanzibar.

Our bungalow Le Goyer was so beautifully designed, very spacious and with a lovely terrace with direct views on the ocean a few hundreds meters away. Free fast wifi internet, hot water and electricity 24h/day.
The beach is beautiful even though it's a "working" beach were local villagers grow and collect sea weeds. We still swum in the ocean every day and enjoyed it a lot!
The pool, the restaurant, the open-air cinema and the private beach area are very nicely set up, and the option to eat the delicious breakfast anywhere in your bungalow or around the resort is such a great idea!

The food that Andre cooks everyday is truly out of this world! Andre is a very talented and creative chef. We had dinner there for 8 nights, and the 4 courses meals were so delicious and varied. A true joy for the taste buds. Everything is home-made (included the amazing bread loafs) and the ingredients are either sourced locally or grown by the owners themselves.
In my many travels over the years, I have never eaten so well anywhere else. The food itself is reason enough to book a holiday at Pumzika!

The other thing that makes Pumzika so unique is that the owners Danielle & Andre live there and dedicate all their time to taking care of their guests. The level of services, the professionalism and the attention to details make for such a comfortable and unforgettable holiday.
Danielle & Andre are so kind and hospitable. It was a real pleasure meeting them and being under their care during our holiday there.
The rest of the local staff are very nice and welcoming too!

I cannot praise Pumzika Beach Resort enough! We hope to come back again one day to this oasis of peace in Zanzibar! Thank you so much Danielle & Andre!

I should say that I created a Trip Advisor account for the sole purpose of providing a glowing review for Pumzika Beach Resort. My boyfriend and I spent 3 days/3 nights at Pumzika in the Oezti Deluxe Bungalow late November 2014 and I would not have changed anything about our accommodation. I have provided some thoughts below for interested travelers:

Location: Pumzika is well worth the trek away from Stone Town and it is about an hour taxi ride from the airport. The resort sits along a stunning coastline that boasts dramatic tides and light commercial activity from the locals (early morning fishing and collecting coconuts). I felt as though Pumzika provided an authentic Zanzibari experience far removed from touristic activities. The grounds of the resort are beautiful and do not detract from the natural beauty of the beach.

Service: I truly felt like an esteemed guest the entire stay. Danielle, Andre, and the entire staff are friendly, attentive, and disarming. I unfortunately fell ill one day and Danielle (also a registered nurse) cared for me and routinely stopped by the bungalow to check on me. Additionally, Danielle and Andre are a very engaging and interesting couple. We had great chats and enjoyed being in their company at Pumzika.

Activities/Amenities: We enjoyed the resort and only left to take a bike ride to the nearby lighthouse and to visit Makunduchi. That said, the beach/pool/library kept us quite busy. We decided against any outside activities because we had already been snorkeling prior to our stay and we were so happy with the resort that we found no reason to leave. Had we not had a couple of days in Stone Town we would have probably booked a tour or activity through Pumzika. We made use of the gym/yoga mats and the sports room. Depending on the time of day (tides) we went swimming, walked out to the reef, or walked along the beach. As per our room set-up and amenities, we had access to WiFi in certain parts of our bungalow (not that it mattered much) and we had everything we could need in the room.

Food: Anything I say could not do Andre's cuisine justice. Breakfast was served at our bungalow each morning and was the perfect start to our day; we even enjoyed homemade marmalades and fresh bread! We ate lunch by the pool everyday and a four-course dinner at the "chef's table." Our first course was always a soup and Andre had us try to guess the main ingredients...it was something unique and playful. We requested meals that featured local seafood and we were not disappointed. Breakfast was included in our bungalow package, whereas lunch and dinner were offered at a small additional cost. I was impressed by the attention to detail and the quality of the food/service for the price. I would recommend a dinner at Pumzika for any traveler in Zanizbar, whether they stay at Pumzika or not.

We made so many wonderful memories at Pumzika and it was the perfect beach vacation. I would, without any hesitation, stay again my next visit to Zanizbar.

We stayed at Pumzika for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. We were the only guests for our whole stay and were treated royally by Andre and Danielle. Our room/suite was amazing...HUGE bedroom, upstairs outdoor seating area (where we had breakfast every day) and nice bathroom. Pumzika has a lovely swimming pool and it's own private beach with rustic sunloungers made from local materials. Every evening, we headed up to the main house to enjoy an INCREDIBLE meal courtesy of Andre. Yum! Although we normally like venturing to different restaurants on holiday, we were more than happy to stay with chef Andre every day! We also watched a film on the private beach which was a memorable experience...lying under the stars hearing the bushbabies calling out while watching a hollywood blockbuster was something special.
If you are going to Zanzibar, stay at Pumzika! It's out of the main hustle, bustle and tourist areas and was perfect for a romantic break.
