I spent in La Madrugada 5 fantastic days over the New Year's week, after getting down from Kilimanjaro trek. I was hoping for a relaxing time in a quiet place out of the crowds and main tourist spots of Zanzibar Island – and I got it all even with more I hoped for! The hotel is situated literally on a beach (with less than 20 steps you get from the pool into the beach sand, white with small cute crabs running in your footmarks from time to time, bamboo made couchettes and sunshades just reinforcing the atmosphere of the paradise. The see rises tide early in the morning and then back in the afternoon, while a stone shelf path leads you to the distant reef in between. Just the local people crossing the beach path on a bike from now and then, Tanzanian women shaping bamboo leaves for further use from afar, little cows driven nearby by the local children at the sunset, none of those disturbing your peaceful beach day, it just accentuates the extraordinariness of the place.
I arrived only a few days after the reopening of the hotel and did experience wonderful personnel (big compliment to the Norwegian manager for how she handled group of inappropriately behaving Russian guests, bothering us all already at their arrival day, I could not hope for a more professional situation handling, thank you!), all staff being very helpful, friendly and filling every single of your wishes (beach drinks, boat trip with local fisherman, etc.) The hotel itself and rooms have fitting local designed interior, simple, natural, pool side entrance (ground or 1st floor situated), the restaurant offering good selection of food with a very skilled cook and barman – and particularly great evening barbecues (including fish and sea food at their local cuisine taste). The special occasion New Year’s beach dinner and party with local group dancers, with lighted Good-bye 2012 / Welcome 2013 beach fires, with an unbelievable almost full moon sky, perfect celebration I’ll always remember.
The place is a true pearl for those who try escaping highly animated resorts with plenty of water sport activities.
I’ll be certainly returning back one day…
