“Basic accommodation, but good value and friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Stayed here with a friend for a short break. We got a good price having booked with Buyagift. The hotel is in an old building and is looking a bit tired. There is good parking and the hotel is near to the small town and station. Our room was at the front of the hotel and we could hear the trains with the window open. The room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was big but in need of a spruce up. We had breakfast on both mornings. They do use good quality ingredients in the cooked breakfast but are let down by the cold buffer and cheap bread for the toast. The girls serving are pleasant but seemed to forget our hot food on the second morning. Check in and out was efficient. The pool is small but a nice extra.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back will be quieter

My boyfriend and I stayed here.for two nights all inclusive this month. The deal was fantastic as we were able to use the health suite which included a small pool and steam room. Breakfast and evening meals were absolutely delicious with friendly service throughout our stay. My only negative is the lack of attractions in the immediate area, however if you were to travel by car there are plenty of things to see fairly nearby. I'd definitely recommend a trip to Boscobel house and the white lady priory. If you want to go further afield, Lichfield is around 20 minutes drive away and a wonderful day out. All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and we had a wonderful time. Thanks to all the staff!

Clean, comfortable hotel, decor a little tired in places. Bed comfy, we went down to breakfast towards the end of the sitting so not all choices were available but we expected that. Second morning more choices, because we went down earlier, so overall no complaints. Staff friendly and we were happy with the price we paid and service provided. Did not use the the Leisure facilities.

First impressions was of a fairly unkempt frontage, quite gloomy. Reception was fair with helpful young staff, but when the card machine refused to accept neither my nor my wife's card she inferred it was the cards at fault. Went into town to cash machine, drew cash no probs, machine at fault. Room average, good beds, but bathroom very tired. Could not obtain hot water from bath or sink taps at all during two night stay. No towel rack, shampoos etc. not renewed daily. Ground floor room, no net curtains had to keep main curtains closed for privacy during daytime. Breakfast too expensive at £13.99 each, staff surly and inattentive, no napkins, milk jug on table empty, floor littered. The whole impression was of poorly trained and managed staff. One couple walked out of breakfast after 2 mins. shocked by price. Overall, very average.

Booked a one night stay having stayed at other Merure Hotel Spas and we needed accommodation in that area. Upon booking online, I noted that AI was a possibility so I requested that upgrade. Communication prior to arriving led me to believe we would just pay a supplement upon arrival. During check in, I was told it was impossible unless booked before arrival so we just had the DBB deal. However, this morning another family arrived, complained about their room and were offered the AI deal to compensate. Our receptionist clearly said it was only possible if booked prior to arrival. It seemed that inconsistency was created depending on which member of staff dealt with customers.

Our room was fine but there was no aircon. We requested a fan but this made little difference. As we were on the ground floor, we were unable to leave our window open all night or when out.

The evening meal was good and the service exceptional. The waitresses were attentive and the food was good. This was the best part of the stay.

One of the reasons why we selected this hotel over others was due to the pool. Hmmm.. It was the size of a jacuzzi. If more than 2 people were in it, it was impossible to swim. The most frustrating thing, however, was the spa wasn't staffed in the evening or morning which meant there were no towels whatsoever and the male lockers weren't in use. The steam room door was also stuck - glad we weren't stuck inside. There was lots of mould on the shower walls and the showers had only pipping hot or even hotter water.

Breakfast was a bit bizarre too. We were led to a dirty table when clean ones were available and we had to ask twice for it to be wiped. Waiting on staff seemed a bit too casual, except for the foreign girl who waited on last night, it just didn't feel right. We were positioned right next to another table making all conversations overheard. The restaurant needs to have background music playing to create some atmosphere.

We frequent hotels on a regular basis and knew it was only a three star. We felt that the hotel has lots to offer if inconsistencies and basic attention to detail are addressed then this would improve the overall customer experience in this hotel.

Mostly this hotel was excellent check-in was excellent and very friendly. The room was excellent, bathroom could have been maintained better but was pretty clean. Food was excellent but waiting staff seemed a bit inattentive bt overall not bad. The decor of the hotel was lovely. But and its a big but the leisure centre was rubbish. It was quite warm during my stay and I was dying for a swim to cool me down but I have seen bigger bathtubs and I sure have seen cleaner bathtubs. I lasted about a minute in there as there was already one person in the pool and it isn't made for more than one. I had a go in the steam room and nearly got stuck as the door wouldn't open. The showers and changing room were dirty.

If I were the manager of the hotel i would stop advertising the leisure centre and concentrate on the hotel.

This "Mercure" is defiantly not the quality of others I have stayed in.
