“Low privacy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013 via mobile

This is my 4th visit to con dao but first to CDC. From past experience I got what I paid for. Cleanish rooms no complaints about the bed, linen, towels all good. Water pressure sucks though, specially when you want to get the sand off your body. No food, breakfast was basic. Drinks alright.

To me the biggest issue was the lack of privacy. Workers strolling past your room all the time....some.construction or the other on going...ppl coming to your room to clean the AC, check the cable tv( which never worked). That's definitely an improvement area.

WiFi was good.

Overall decent stay for the price. No complaints about English as some have had by the other reviews. This is pretty standard for con Dao...part of the experience learning sign language :-)

We were surprised for staff poor and selective english even behing in Vietnam. There was things I saw must be said, first the bigest Rat I ever saw, just behind reception, in wall separating from Kitchen. Was about size of a rugby ball not counting with tale. When I pointed to staff he just smile and tried to distract my attention from there. We moved next day. Previosly we watch the reception renting a scooter, with empty fuel, and when girl came back, because the only fuel station on island was without fuel until 16h, the recepcionist was trying hard to say was not their responsability and that she had to pay the same. In 3 nights there, if I had internet more than 5 min in row was already a blessing. The good location on beach, which even had sand flyes ( i was totally bitten out), dont forgive everything. It is budget, but the are a lot of better deals in town.

Accommodation good in that it was basic, but clean with all facilities you need in a room. Towels changed every day. But they could do a lot more for the visitor- they have about 4-5 sun beds most of which are broken. Why not provide more which would encourage you to stay around and then buy their food and drink. But of course they don't serve any food after breakfast ! They are indeed, missing a trick. We found a fantastic beach very near the airport, with golden sands, deck chairs and cafes. Who needs more? We stayed all day and bought their food and drink.
On the plus side, they provide airport transfer at a cost and you can hire motorbikes from them.
On all of Con Dao, you will be plagued by sand flies so we felt 3 days was quite enough otherwise we may not have had any skin left! Do take the highest strength Deet you can with you .
Tours around the prison can be arranged by the staff and the National Park is worth visiting.

Room Tip: Try and get and beach facing room.

We visited in December 2012, the rooms are comfortable and clean, good value and basic. Unfortunately a new dock is being built so this created noise and disturbance and really does spoil the view. The beach is OK but watch out for the sand flies. The weather was windy and overcast but warm, on balance probably not worth the trip from HCM.

Room Tip: Get one as far down the beach as possible to avoid the 5.30 am wake up broadcast from the local Comm...

First of all: how to get to Con Dao from Ho Chi Min City

- fliying with Vietnam airlines or Air Mekong
- take a bus to Vung Tau then a Ferry to Con Son

The first option is "highly recommended".

Follow these few steps if ur brave enough to pick up the second one:
-Go to the Ben Thanh market bus station and just 2 blocks behind it there's the HOA MAI transport office. U probably have to sign ur name at the desk and wait for the first bus available.
-the trip takes 2/3 hours and when u get to Vung Tau ask the driver to get out of the bus at the port where the ferries to Con Dao leave (wich is not a real port but just a pier in the middle of nowhere 10km far from the city center but on the way to it)
-there is only 1 ferry leaving at 5pm and not everyday so check if there's gonna be one that day before leaving.
-be ready to get the slowest, stinkiest, dirtiest ferry ever and small enough to make u feel seek if ur not used to sail. Bunk beds are very small and ull sleep with 60 other people in 50sq mt.
It takes 12/13 hours to get to Con Dao.

About the "Con Dao Camping" i agree with all the other reviewers, the place in nice, right on the beach, room are clean and with fan and AC and the staff is very helpfull, even id their english skills are quite low.

OK normally you get waht you pay for but with Con Dao camping you get far more than you pay for. Friendly and attentive staff - yes english is not their strong point but their english was far better than my Vietnamese by a factor of 100000. Rooms are basic but clean, airconditioned with wifi and with a view and uncrowded beach that will be exploited. My wife and i (we are 50+) had a great time at CDC and the staff helped us enjoy our stay. OK we didin't get to use a motor cycle ourselves BUT it only took a short time to realise that maybe that wasn't the best idea we had ever had.
Room service may have been more on the self serve side but at the prices you are paying for a beach front stay just chill out and be happy.

Room Tip: Add it to the bucket list before we all get there - Swimming pool not needed there is this crowded b...

We are just completing a 10 night stay at Con Dao Camping. We have found it to be a great place to relax and enjoy the slow pace of the island. Nothing like having a long stretch of white sand beach with clear warm and calm water for swimming just steps away from your front door.
We were warned about sand flies but did not encounter them. Perhaps because we used the lounge chairs under the shade of the trees and did not lay out on the sand. If you are concerned than bring a "Deet" based repellant such as "Jungle Juice".
A new pier is under construction next door to the property but this activity did not really detract from the beautiful setting and served as a source of entertainment for us.
Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the rooms. They are clean and comfortable.
The entire staff seemed very friendly although their english is limited. The beach bar style restaurant serves inexpensive seafood with picture menus. Most will find the service slow but they seem to have a real interest in improving in that area. We had fun introducing them to the "ITranslate" APP on the IPhone. Great communication aid.
The manager Ms Dung has good English and customer service skills. She went out of her way to make our stay a pleasant experience. The kindness she showed us is just priceless and will bring us back again someday.

Room Tip: All rooms pretty equal but we preferred facing the beach instead of the garden.
