The George was one of seven locations we looked at a year ago to hold our wedding at, which was four weeks ago. I kept notes detailing our thoughts of all the places we viewed, which is helpful now that I am writing this!
When I rang a year ago to book an appointment to view the venue, the staff member was very polite and helpful. They asked brief questions to make sure that they could accommodate us prior to booking an appointment so that they did not waste our time. You would think this would be common sense but out of the seven venues we contacted, only The George and one other checked this information prior to our visit. Despite me making this call at 7pm, within 20 minutes I had been emailed a brochure and the email contained a personalised welcome message, not a standard message.
When we met the then-deputy manager, he sat down with a blank piece of paper and said “What do you want your day to be like”. Out of all the venues we visited, he was the only wedding planner to ask us this. All the other venues told us what would happen and how the day would run. He was very approachable and friendly and we were told that the hotel will be closed for the day so that our wedding would be exclusive to us. We were given complete flexibility with every aspect and the rooms could be laid out in a variety of ways. The bedrooms were very spacious, even the smaller rooms, and were well decorated. The rooms were very clean and each had complimentary dressing gowns. Tea and coffee is also complimentary.
We looked at a few more venues after this initial visit, but none of them came close to The George, so we booked our Wedding with them. We had a further meeting with the then-deputy manager and he answered all the questions we had and nothing was too much trouble. I designed my own menu rather than using their set menus and we visited the hotel in October to try what would be our wedding meal and the wines we had chosen. The food was absolutely incredible!! We also took this opportunity to look round all the bedrooms in the hotel to choose which one we would like for our Wedding night. Whilst there is large room that is usually used for the bridal suite, and we did go on to pick this room, we were given the option of any room if we preferred one of the others.
We found out earlier this year that the then-deputy manager had left employment with the hotel and were told that Cynthia, the manager, would be our wedding planner. I was anxious, as I’m sure many brides would be, as all my arrangements had been made with the then-deputy manager and part of the reason we had chosen that venue was because of his attitude and approach to helping with our wedding. Any concerns I had quickly subsided when it became clear that the then-deputy manager had documented all of our conversations and Cynthia showed us that she is just as efficient, if not more so.
On the run up to the wedding, I sent Cynthia a number of emails clarifying things, or adding and changing things. Two weeks before the wedding, I added extra guests to our wedding party when some friends and a relative were able to attend following their plans changing. I was never made to feel as though I was being a nuisance. Each time I emailed, I received a very quick response.
I stayed at the hotel the night before our wedding and from the moment I arrived, all the staff made me feel special. It’s hard to put into words just how wonderful the staff at The George are, but each and every one of them made us feel as though we were the most important customers to the hotel.
Our wedding day was simply perfect and Cynthia and her team made sure that it ran smoothly. Unfortunately, it rained all day, but Cynthia and her team were quickly on hand to help our photographer set up ‘plan b’ for our photographs. Cynthia ensured that everything ran to the timings I gave her. The food was even better than we remembered and our guests are still commenting on how they will return for a meal at the hotel.
The overall cost was very reasonable; but for the level of service we received it was exceptional!
We have experienced everything that the hotel has to offer; a function, food, drinks and accommodation and we could not recommend this hotel highly enough. Thank you to Cynthia, you exceeded our expectations and played a vital role in our special day. And thank you to all the staff who really know what customer service is all about and are a credit to Cynthia.
