“Room with a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

The hotel is old fashioned but everywhere is clean and the room we had for our two night stay was overlooking the harbour which we loved. Breakfast was very busy but plenty of food. Being able to park the car safely was another plus. We enjoyed our stay here

The rooms are rather small and old-fashioned (also, there's no elevator, just a narrow staircase), but waking up hearing the seagulls and having sea-view made up for it. Private car park is also a plus - if you manage to be there early enough to get a space.

Dear Mr,

I am really sorry that you were obliged to leave our hotel the other day. I have asked an amercain woman whom I know in Criel sur Mer to translate this letter, as my English lacks some fondation to give you a response as to the famous bugs that were in the Tréport and our hotel the other day.

The technical name is Thrips, and when we have hot, humid days in Normandy, Thrips can be numerous in the air, sometimes more than 2 million per km2. It was once thought that this phenomenon was related to the electrical state of the atmosphere at the approach of a storm, hence their nickname of "storm bugs". But it is just when the temperature is between 19 and 22 ° and the humidity in the air is between 70 and 75% that Thrips fly. These "clouds" of Thrips are due to spin or migratory flights. They are very uncomfortable when they land on you, but don't bite. They live basically 24 hours.

I was astonished that you didn't know these insects, but my american friend told me that they didn't exist where she is from in America, so I assume that they don't exist in England either.

If we keep the windows closed, they don't come in, but since it was very hot, the windows weren't closed. That was our error and also not to have explained that it would be better to keep the windows closed until the evening, when the températures go down.

I just wanted to clarify what happened the day that you came to our hotel. We always try our best to satisfy our customers, and we truly regret that this took place when you were in the Tréport.

We sincerely hope that you will understand and that we really could not do anything to control the weather conditions that brought on these bugs. As I tried to explain, but my English isn't very good, they were Thrips and not mites.

Best regards to you and your wife,

We found this hotel accidently and asked for a good price double-room and we found a really lovely place, rooms are individually designed and from some of them you can see the sea. It was clean, quiet, very small but good arranged and only costs 65,- €. Then another positive surprise was the breakfast buffet with all kind of things you like to find in the morning to eat for only 8,50 €, coffee, tea for free. We felt very lucky to found it. Go there!

Room Tip: Choose room with sight to the sea

Recently refurbished room, nice bathroom. Comfortable bed. Basic toiletries provided. Quiet. A good breakfast but found that the earlier for breakfast provided the best choice.
Something to keep in mind though that there was no lift. We were on 4th floor and this could be a problem for some.
We found all the staff friendly and helpful.
It was a good location. We arrived by train and found the hotel quite easily on the walking route.

We stayed two enjoyable nights at Hotel de Calais in November. We had a corner room with a wonderful view of the harbour although it was up three flights of stairs.
Breakfast was not very good, they seemed reluctant to put more food out! But as we were there out of season there were not any other places to eat at that time of the morning. They do not do evening meals but there are several good restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. If we stayed in Le Treport again I would choose this hotel purely for the position, but go for a harbour view. We parked in the Hotel Car Park which is locked at night.

Room Tip: Harbour view

We spent two days in the beautiful town of Le Tréport last summer. Had a great stay at Hotel de Calais. Neat rooms, good breakfast, friendly people, and wonderfully located along the harbour. Good value for money. We're coming back to this place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second or third floor, overlooking the harbour. It's a little more expensi...
