OK - it wasn't a great holiday: rained almost every day, but our lunch at the Auberge de Bac restored our faith in French restaurants. We were the only tourists - everyone else in the packed restaurant was French. The food was classic Norman cuisine, served with classic French professionalism by capable waiters and accompanied with an excellent bottle of reasonably-priced wine. I had a demi-tourteau followed by a faux-filet, finishing with a strawberry charlotte and coffee. The bill for two of us, including wine and water, was about 70 euros.
The setting is wonderful - right beside the Seine. From our tables in the glass-fronted restaurant we could watch the occasional barge making its way upriver to Paris. The whole experience was straight out of an Impressionist painting - just sublime!
