“Needs renovation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Like most visitors we chose Chateau d'Audrieu as we were visiting the WWII landing beaches. While the reception staff were excellent, the property was not up the levels we have come to expect from Relais and Chateaux. We were in the lower level of a small house near the garden. The room had a damp odor. I kept windows wide open whenever we were in the room. The toilet had no ventilation. The large bathroom had a jacuzzi bath but no shower just a shower attachment on the taps. There is ample room for a walk-in shower. The layout of the room was old fashioned and awkward. My husband had great difficulty walking around the bed from his side as it was too large for the room.
The restaurant meal was excellent and service was faultless. The same could not be said of breakfast. The staff were inefficient. Items were not replaced. It took far too long to get tea and other things that were missing from the buffet given how few guests there were.
Sadly, we would not recommend this hotel to others, nor would we stay in it again.

This is a beautiful property. The rooms are OK in size but desperately in need of renovation. The bed is squeaky and the bathroom is tired. Such a shame since the building itself is spectacular.
We stayed in a "standard room" with a King-size bed on the first floor facing the courtyard and garden. At Euro 330 per night, it is a bit over-priced. However, the restaurant is outstanding. We hope the owners will update the rooms real soon.

Room Tip: Get a room on the first floor. Avoid the ground floor.

When we decided to visit the Normandy beach area our hotel choice came down to this property and Chateau La Chenviere. We chose the latter. Either would have been a fine choice. We did eat here one night, however, and it was terrific. Just what one would expect in a R&L property restaurant. Great food, service. Expensive, but what else would one expect here?

My husband and I splurged for two nights in a junior suite during our visit to Normandy. We loved learning about the history of the property and the room was lovely. What made it less than ideal for us was the fact that we had to play second fiddle to the Backroads biking group at dinner. Nothing against Backroads; I've gone on several trips with them myself. But when you can't have dinner the first night because the restaurant is closed (understandable) and the earliest you can make a reservation for the next night is 8:30 PM, you just expect to get your starter before 10 PM. Our server was aware of the situation and he did try some remedies - pouring more wine (the bottle was about finished before our food arrived) and bringing an extra little plate of something from the kitchen, but it just was very disappointing. Breakfast was just okay; maybe it was our bad luck on the timing, but no glasses, some selections of food had run out; etc. For an extra $26 euros per person, this just seemed wrong.

A lovely place to stay. The welcome was good, especially after a very long drive, but unfortunately the restaurant was closed that night so a snack was provided at the bar. The room in the attic was large and comfortable and we slept well in the peace of the countryside. The breakfast was excellent and sent us on our way, happy.

Room Tip: We booked one of the least cost rooms in the attic and it was fine for us. You can pay double the ra...

Chateau d'Audrieu is close to Caen so ideal as a stopover to or from the ferry. Definitely a picture postcard French chateau with a charming garden. We were upgraded to a ground floor room when the staff noted I was walking with a stick (recent operation) which was spacious and well equipped. The dining room is in the 'central' part of the chateau with views on both sides, charming floral displays and service was excellent. Dinner was good but perhaps a touch below Micehlin * level. A buffet breakfast was extensive including three sorts of cake (though chocolate cake for breakfast seemed a bit too much even for a chocolate lover). We would certainly stay again.

We booked an attic room (€200 incl. breakfast for 2) and for this price we would stay here again. The hotel is in a lovely location and beautiful surroundings. It was lovely to dip in the heated pool before breakfast. The breakfast buffet is excellent, so much choice and top quality. The room was spacious and comfortable. As it was hot, we asked if they had a fan we could use, which was promptly brought and the room cooled down very quickly. It was a pleasure to sleep with the windows open and enjoy the country side silence.

We ate 2 nights in the restaurant. The meals were excellent, but definitely on the pricey side, but for what would get worth it. We did not experience anything negative when compared to some of the other reviews. The service was very good and friendly and the chef came to our table to discuss/explain the dishes after the meal, which we enjoyed.
