“The best place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Cardomom House is very special. From the moment you arrive, to the moment you leave, everything is perfect. The welcome from Chris and his team is unique, and nothing is too much for them. The setting is idyllic, with 4 rooms in the main house, with a central opening between the rooms, open to allow a breeze and over-looking a large lake, where we swam daily. The food is delicious: breakfast on your large vernandah, lunch in the shade and supper on the roof with veiws of the stars. The rooms are lovely, with nice bathrooms, with piping hot showers. There are 2 other cottages, but the main house of 4 rooms has the best view. They arranged trips, if you wanted, to the local village they support, and to neighbouring towns, including Madurai.
All in all, perfection, and I cannot imagine anyone not loving it. We extended our stay to 5 nights and could have stayed longer if it had been possible. In March 2013, a swimming pool is being built, which will make it even more desirable. Do go if at all possible.

Room Tip: The 4 rooms in the main house are special, but there are only 7 in all.

We went to Cardamom House for Christmas, with a friend’s family. Stayed for 3 days. Everything about this place is amazing. The location with hills around the house & the lake in-front. The service & food was fantastic. I was bowled over by the Cardamom House Omlette & generally enjoyed all my meals, especially the dinners served on the terrace! The trek-up the hill to the local village temple & the walk around the lake were fabulous providing many photo opportunities. I asked the staff to provide me a cycle. This was promptly arranged. So I went cycling, around the lake, on a couple of days. The weather was pleasant & views were simply stunning. There was also some good birdlife at one end of the lake. I also liked their library. If you like outdoors/birding/cycling/photography/walking & food, this place is a gem. A hidden gem. I hope it stays that way! Hat’s off to Dr.Chris & his team!

We were on a 'Kerala explorer' trip, so we were surprised to find ourselves in Tamil Nadu, especially after an eight hour journey to get here. Once here, we chilled and wished that we had more time. The staff were all wonderful, the food was perfect, and the place is very lovely. It is great that this place is the only one we came across that used solar panels! We took the village tour with Pandi, and this was a very special part of our trip. What more can I say, we just did not have the time to swim in the Lake, visit Madurai, or spend much time in Dindigul. We did see the rock and the fort in Dindigul and this was really amazing.

Wonderful hotel run by wonderful people. we hope to find time to come back to explore Tamil Nadu and stay again.

I stayed five nights at Cardomom House and cannot speak highly enough about the wonderful staff who could not have been more helpful and attentive. The food was some of the best I have had in India. Christ Lucas runs his hotel with a light touch and it feels like staying with a very happy family.

Room Tip: The room called Saffron is big and airy and looks over the garden and lake

Cardamom House should be included in the tour itinerary of every visitor to Tamil Nadu. Chris Lucas and his very attentive staff made our stay enjoyable and memorable. Nothing was too much trouble and we could not have been better looked after. Our needs were invariably anticipated be they a cool drink or a refreshing cup of tea or a small snack and they appeared very quickly as we sat on the terrace overlooking the lake. The food was tasty, well cooked and beautifully presented. We'll return again (and again) whenever we feel the need to truly get away from modern day life and relax and luxuriate in the comfort of one of the best homestays in India.

Room Tip: All rooms are good so rely on Chris Lucas to put you in the room he thinks will suit you best.

My wife and I stayed for three nights at Cardamom House (27-29 Aug 2012). She had visited the place a few years earlier, on work and we had been planning to stay there for a long time. Dr. Chris Lucas is a warm, kindhearted doctor and very funny. He gladly welcomed us into his life, sharing anecdotes of his 18 years in Dindigul, designing the fabulous buildings, training local people in the fine art of running a top-class ecologically sustainable resort. The rooms are airy, spacious and tastefully done in a simple, elegant manner. The bathroom was very clean. The sheets and towels were fresh. The food was thoughtfully prepared using mostly locally grown vegetables, something he encourages. The library has a lovely collection of books on local fauna and flora. We were also fortunate to interact with some of his friends who were staying there and who were extremely knowledgeable. The staff -- all from a nearby village with no formal training in hotel management -- are very helpful and friendly, but not in a nosy way so common elsewhere, especially in Kerala. It's a great place, especially if you want absolute peace and quiet. It's best to avoid any travel and just soak in the local sights and sounds. It's a great place for birdwatchers (he also has binoculars and a lot of bird books).

We hope to stay there again in the near future.

Room Tip: Remember that this is a homestay -- the owner Dr. Chris Lucas is welcoming you into his family. Unde...

We had been to cardamom house in mid august for a two night stay. We stayed in a twin bedded room named "pepper corn". The room was simple but tastefully done. The space was adequate for the two of us. The room and bathroom were extremely clean and well maintained. It was well ventilated. In spite of being bang in the midst of so much shrubbery and trees, surprisingly there were no mosquitoes in the room.

As per our request we were served Indian meals for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was continental. The grapes, mangoes, apples, banana, papaya, etc tasted heavenly. We enquired as to where they had obtained the grapes. We were pleasantly surprised when they gave us a sizeable quantity of grapes to take home, for which the staff refused to accept any payment. Lunch was simple, yet tasty fare. Dinner included non vegetarian items too and again quite delicious. Freshly cooked vegetables formed a generous portion of lunch and dinner. We enjoyed the experience of the fire on the banana fritter. We were given water from their tap which was filtered. It tasted good and was far better than bottled water. The lunch and dinner timings suited us fine. But breakfast was quite early.

Cardamom house is surrounded by trees, shrubs and the beautiful lake (even though it was not full at this time of the year). We saw many sun birds in various hues just outside our room. We began a stroll along the lake with a binocular provided by the staff and saw some storks and ducks in the lakeside. But the sweltering heat cut short our intended walk around the lake and we headed back to the room with disappointment. After that the continuous rain made it impossible for us to venture outdoors. But fortunately we saw a lot of other birds and a group of painted stork near the lake. The ever enthusiastic "Periasamy" got us familiar with all the birds, trees, etc around cardamom house with the aid of a few books and his experiences.

The six staff have been well trained and their professionalism was evident throughout our stay. Kudos to Chris for shaping such a good team! They just knew when we wanted them, but at the same time they respected our privacy too. Such a rare combination of traits!

On the whole we had a very pleasant stay in Cardamom house and we would highly recommend it as a place to chill out and relax. It is definitely a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
