“Amazing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had stay for a night away from all the hustle and bustle of city life; you can only hear nature. Each of our meal was set up in different place and was very well presented. The rooms were very clean. Will stay here again and will recommend to all.

South India may not be as well known as the north, but it has so much to offer the traveller. However, it is chaotic and noisy, and the towns and cities are crowded. Lakeside is the perfect antidote. It is a haven of tranquillity, the perfect place to return to after an exciting, busy day sightseeing. The term ‘guesthouse’ doesn’t do Lakeside justice. Staying there is like being in a house party, looked by generous, amenable hosts and their attentive but discreet staff. Adding to the atmosphere are Perry, the extremely well behaved dog, and Raja, the Kathiawari horse.

The accommodation is excellent; mine was in the main house and comprised a good size twin bedroom with a well equipped en-suite bathroom. The double doors opened onto the terrace with views over the beautiful gardens, with the lake and the Palani Hills beyond. The only noise to disturb the tranquillity was that of the many birds that inhabit Lakeside’s large grounds.

The food at Lakeside is excellent; menus are fixed, but the staff will respond with alacrity to any special requests. It is worth adding that this is the only place in India where I have been happy to eat anything offered and to drink water that isn’t bottled, such are the high standards of hygiene.

This was my second visit to Lakeside; I stayed for ten days this time, having visited two years ago. Like other reviewers, I don’t usually contribute to websites like TripAdvisor, but Lakeside is very special. Its owners, Dorinda and Pete, strike the perfect balance of friendliness and attention to detail. They are always there when you need anything and seemingly nothing is too much trouble. Pete takes great pride in ensuring that the accommodation is always in perfect order and that the beautiful swimming pool is sparkling clean, and Dorinda organises and escorts fascinating local tours from Lakeside as well as ensuring that the menus are superb, and always acceptable to individual guests’ needs.

Lakeside is simply perfect!

Thank you for your kind and encouraging comments. We were very happy to welcome you to Lakeside a second time, and hope that it won't be the last! As you know, we have worked hard to put together some interesting excursions from Lakeside, but if you have any ideas about what else people might like to see and experience please do email me. Your ideas would be much appreciated and would be used to help create more excursions.

Such a great review from a well-seasoned traveller to India is most humbling, and very much appreciated. Thank you.

The brochure says it all. We cannot fault this wonderful place Dorinda and Peter are delightful hosts and made our stay memorable. The staff, lead by John Kennedy were charming and attentive and Perry the dog must not be forgotten. A good sized swimming pool was most welcome after long walks around the lake and cycle trips to the village. We stayed for four nights and were sad to say goodbye.

Like a previous reviewer, I use TripAdvisor a lot when searching for somewhere to stay but have never written a review. This place is so special however that I just have to write.

We stayed in this valley for two nights two years ago while on a tour and found it was not long enough. The place we stayed in was set back from the lake so this time we thought we would try Lakeside which is right on the shore making access to the lake easier for walking - and we were glad we did!

We spent five nights here and could have stayed longer. The grounds are open and spacious with an abundance of shrubs and flowers in the neatly kept gardens, (my wife loved the gardens) then there is the contrast of about three acres of wild forest left for the animals and which we were able to stroll through. Add to this direct access to the lakeside and you are in a unique place.

The swimming pool is one of the best kept we have seen during our travels in India - always spotlessly clean. There are areas for sunbathing (suited my wife!) and shady areas for reading (suited me!)

The owners of Lakeside are an English couple who welcome you as friends. They have many fascinating stories to tell of their time in India which gives a real insight into rural life there. The staff are helpful in an unassuming and unobtrusive way, some of the best we have experienced in guesthouse (and hotel!) stays in India. We also found the food to be of great variety and quality - lovely tasting south Indian food without too much spice for us.

We took a couple of excursions arranged by Dorinda and thoroughly enjoyed them as they gave us a much deeper understanding of rural life in India.

Lakeside is definitely our favourite place in India and we hope to be able to return.

Thank you for your kind remarks, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. It was our pleasure to help you explore this lovely area and to meet with some of the locals who, as you are aware, are also keen to meet our western visitors!
We do hope that we will be able to welcome you to Lakeside again in the future.

As the name suggests, Lakeside is beautifully situated overlooking a lake with a ring of mountains behind it.
Although we were in the cheapest room (3600 rupees / night) we had a wonderful view from the long, shared veranda and spent many hours in comfortable chairs gazing at the lake.
The rooms are very comfortable with an excellent shower and comfortable beds.
The cottages on site looked very attractive and are well spaced
The service by the six male staff was excellent and the quality of the food high - in fact, we had some of the best meals we have had in India. The meals are a fixed menu offering both Indian and western foods.
Peter and Dorinda, the very hospitable owners, offer two interesting half-day trips-one around the local village area and one to the nearest town. Both are well worth going on for non-Indians. They also offer day trips to Madurai and Thekady which we did not go on as we had already visited them.
There is also the opportunity to walk around the lake and view the many birds as well as cycling into the local village.
We had an extremely relaxing and enjoyable week at Lakeside and would highly recommend it.

Thank you for your review Doug. We are glad you enjoyed the trips as they really do give a feel for live in rural south India for the western traveller, and an insight into our life here as ex-pats!

Thank you also for your kind comments about the food we serve, for which we now have an excellent reputation locally and amongst travellers.

The bathrooms have been designed and furniture chosen to appeal to those who like western standards of accommodation, so we are glad that they met your expectations. Maybe you can visit us again sometime to try out one of the cottages?!

Regards
Dorinda

I've never written a review before, but after staying at 'lakeside' for a couple of nights from Boxing Day and enjoying the absolutely incredible surroundings and immaculate accommodation offered by Dorinda, Pete and their staff, I felt I had to.

If you have read their own description on their website and it strikes a chord with you, then you won't be disappointed. We booked a cottage and were suitably impressed with its spacious layout and terrific location. The garden outside our door was beautiful and full of sunbirds.

Pete and Dorinda seem to have done the impossible (or rather, seemingly impossible to find these days) in that their place is not only unique in its style and location, but actually fulfils all of its promises from quality of accommodation, friendliness and warmth, not only of the hosts but also staff who seemed very happy indeed and the bird and wildlife rich environment that surrounds them.

This place deserves to become a 'must visit location' for those looking for somewhere peaceful and unspoilt. I don't think I can remember seeing better maintained plantations in India then those flanking the shores of the drinking water quality lake. We hope to visit again next time we are in the south.

Thank you so much for your kind review Ali, we know that some properties in India bear little resemblance to their advertisements, but we are great believers in honest advertising and try not to promise anything we can't deliver. We thoroughly enjoyed having you to stay with us over the festive season and hope to see you again later in the year. Maybe you will be able to join us for Christmas Day this year?!

Our stay at Lakeside was just perfect!
The views were spectacular especially when having breakfast on the veranda.
The hosts were extremely kind and helpful and went to great extremes to make our stay so memorable. The trips and tours they organised for us to outlying areas and to Kerala were superb and we were able to savour the real life of the area.
The support staff were also excellent and could not have been bettered.
The facilities AC room in main house, pool, meal venues, TV lounge, library, transport etc were all excellent.
The whole experience made our first trip to India so enjoyable that we really hope we can return.
We would certainly recommend the venue to anyone who wants a lovely tranquil stay in beautiful surroundings. Thank you for a wonderful stay Dorinda and Peter.

Thank you Vivien, I can quite honestly say that we enjoyed your visit just as much as you did! We are so glad that you enjoyed your short 'side-trip' to Kerala, especially the elephant experience; we will certainly be happy to help you organise other trips should you return to Lakeside.
