If you have already been to magical Kinosaki, then you'll already know it as one of the best onsen towns in Japan, even if a little out of the way. To experience Kinosaki you need to pick a ryokan (hotel), don your yukata (robe) and geta (clogs) and clip-clop your way around the town's seven public onsen. This is best done early in the morning or early evening when the streets are empty of cars and trucks, and is when the other onsen tourists take to the streets. Kinosaki offers accommodation for all budgets - cheap through to expensive. My first trip was to one of the cheaper ryokan (minshuku). Then, second time to Kinosaki, I decided to try out Nishimuraya Honkan which is at the expensive end, and makes claim to be a real japanese ryokan - something difficult to find even in Japan. Nishimuraya Honkan has great facilities, comfortable and clean rooms which overlook a beautiful japanese courtyard. For once, it actually looks better in real life than in the photos. But most of all, the hotel excels with its service: We were greeted at the station by one of their staff - a beautiful japanese girl in kimono, who was assigned to us, and made a genuine effort to make our stay special. She served us tea, food, and dressed my partner in her yukata, made up our bed and oriented us to the town's onsen. We made it to 4 of the 7 public onsen which were of high standard. If you are after something more romantic, then I would suggest booking into their private onsen at their sister hotel, a little way out of town. Staff will arrange a driver. I wouldn't bother staying at the sister hotel due to its location, but the private onsen is worth the trip.
All up, this ryokan is one of the very best I have stayed in. The service sets it apart from the rest - it is up there with Fujiya Hotel in Hakone as an experience to remember, although for different reasons. The Kinosaki and Nishimuraya Honkan combination makes for an excellent romantic getaway, and a highlight for your trip to Japan, so much so, I hestitate posting this review because I want to keep it all to myself :)
