“Olde style pub which is ok or a short stay when in business!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013 via mobile

I stayed for one night in a double room which cost £55 inclusive of breakfast. Was a little surprised to be personally led to my room by the bar staff up a set if very wonky stairs! Room was clean and tidy but the two sets of ear defenders on the tea tray were of putting. Ha a few drinks in the bar, which unfortunately the bar had a stale aroma which put us of eating.
The room was tidy and loads of hot water and towels with bath and shower available. I had a good nights sleep once bar closed around 11.30pm but was noisy up until then. Breakfast was of poor quality and cooked breakfast came cold. When I queried this with waitress she ignored my remarks and disappeared! Breakfast choice was also disappointing, however the coffee was very nice.

Have visited the Griffin a few times recently for their £1-99 breakfast. I have to say they have been some of the best breakfasts I have had, a fried egg cooked to perfection, sausage, bacon, hash brown, beans and proper thick toast. Served until 12 noon it makes the perfect brunch.

Went twice to this venueduring our stay in UK. Each meal was excellent value and the staff first class. My wife is vegetarian and she had two unusual choices although the first visit the pasta dish was very small. The meals were well presnted by friendly and helpful staff.Wine was such good value getting the fullbottle whn buying two glasses. Also attended a lunchtime bar meal and an evening of real ale all excellent.

Me and my girlfriend went to The Griffin in August with some tesco vouchers and even tho I only had to pay for drinks I still felt ripped off! 2 pints of soft drink came to nearly £6! We went for our meal at around 5 on a midweek day and the place was Ridiculously understaffed, there was 1 person behind the bar, 1 person in the kitchen and 1 person serving and this was stupid for the time and size of pub! I had a mixed grill- the egg wasn't cooked, the steak was overdone, the gammon was burnt and very fatty, chicken was burnt, the only part of it which was nice was the sausage! My girlfriend had hunters chicken which was tiny! When we had visited before it was a good size but this time the chicken was small and burnt with a drizzle of BBQ sauce, 1 piece of streeky bacon and half a slice of cheese! Probably a quarter of the size of last time! And this food took more than an hour to arrive at the table when it used to take less than 30 mins! AVOID THE GRIFFEN!

I stayed here for a week whilst working in the town.Positives were the rooms and showers, clean rooms, comfy beds, good powerful showers with plenty of hot water. One thing that worried me were the ear plugs, supplied with the tea & coffee, which being a light sleeper put me right off, with the room being right outside the main road, I was told that they would not be needed until the weekend when the pub is opened late with music/disco being held. My room-mate did not need them but i was woken every morning about 6ish by a road sweeper and earlier on the Tuesday as a street market was being set up.I checked out on the Friday as i did not want to risk a sleepless night.
For people lucky enough to be able to sleep normally I would recommend this place. A full breakfast is served from 7am, which was ok, and there is ample parking available.
I ate there on the first night, The meal was awful. as were 2 others on our table of 4.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the road and the Market square

I stayed here for one night, the room was actually of a higher standard than most uk chain hotels, with a reasonable bed. I was concerned about noise, but this was not an issue from either outside or the pub (admittedly it was a Tuesday in January).
The food was ok, nothing special, but typical chain pub standard.
As accommodation in this area is limited, I would use the Griffin again
