“Absolutely outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

We spent several days at the Cara Sol and and were amazed by the experience from the moment we arrived until the time (reluctantly) we had to leave. John and his team have got things just right, and it is very obvious that they work extremely well together. The staff are friendly, the food exceptional (how nice to eat such good French food in premises where they don't make you feel they are doing you a favour by letting you eat it!!), the view from the terrace spectacular. We will definitely return.

This is a great hotel. It is situated up on the ramparts of Elne on route to the Cathedral. The room that we had was in an extension to the main building that is two years old and was large and well furnished. The owner who originates from Halifax gave us a friendly welcome and was most helpful in assisting us to plan a day investigating the coastline down into Spain. The evening meals were first class with friendly service. The town of Elne is a short walk from the hotel and is taken over on Friday's by a massive market. The train station is 10 minutes walk and we spent an interesting day by train in Perpignan. It is also a worthwhile stroll through the narrow lanes and alleys near the Cathedral from the hotel.

TIP We parked on the left on the hill leading up to the rampart gateway and walked up to reception, however, the owner explained that we could take our car through the alley immediately right after coming through rampart gateway despite the "No Entry" sign. This provided more free parking and an easier turn around than doing a 3 point turn on the hill.

This is a cracking Hotel in Elne. Rooms are new, excellent value for money. The food is excellent but the best kept secret is the wine from the local area.
Actually, every aspect of this Hotel is great. Staff are very friendly, food is to die for...had fois gras ravioli the last time as a starter which was devine and completely cleared the plate of my steak main course.
I'm looking for any excuse to go back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are new so no stress needed at all

We stayed here last week for three nights while exploring the area. The hotel was a complete contrast to the other hotel was used as it is very contemporary in style. The room was fine and had air conditioning which was needed as it got very warm while we were there. The evening meals in the terrace were a great end to the day, with lovely views of the mountains, and the food was always good. Breakfast was a little more basic than other places we have stayed but still good. The only slight problem was more one for us in that is was very easy to speak English throughout the stay! As we now live in France we try to speak French wherever possible to build up our knowledge but it is always quicker to fall back on what you know!

Room Tip: We had a room on the front looking out at the mountains which was very nice.

Cara-sol is classified as a 2-chimney establishment in the French Logis guide – I’ve stayed in many 2-chimney Logis, and I think that Cara-sol is infinitely better than any of them. It is moreover excellent value for money: we had a modern, clean, comfortable bedroom with a stunning view over the plain of the Roussillon towards the Pyrenees, and a copious breakfast, for 85 euros. Bathroom well-equipped, but a hairdryer would be useful. Bed and pillows a little hard. Good restaurant, with terrace sharing the same wonderful views. Highly recommended.

After returning from a spain vacation, we stayed a couple of nights in this great hotel. Sitting on the walls of Elne, you have a stunning view on the Pyrenees. The restaurant is great, wonderful meals, the english cook is doing as good, if not better than any french cook in this price range. John, the owner and host is always helpful. While staying there, the hotel went through some major extension with adding more rooms. The town is easy to reach from here, as well as the sea cost and Perpignan. The rooms are good size, nicely equipped and clean.
