“Unbelievable Experience set in an Idyllic Setting.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2011

Places like Playa Viva are difficult to define without sounding cliche; stunning, redefining, idyllic. Playa Viva hits those marks and goes over and above with their commitment to sustainability, the environment, and the surrounding community. Their staff is on-point, attentive, and entertaining. Our group was always taken care of, with no complaints, worries, or issues - hands-down an unbelievable experience. I hope to visit again next year!

Imagine Mexico without the tourists. You can walk on the beach for an hour and may see a local net fisherman, if anyone. We released baby turtles in thre morning and at night gathered the eggs from the large ones that came onto shore. The staff is incredible, the activities second to none, the vibe authentic, faciltiies immaculate, and food incredible. If you are considering going to a big resort in the same area, don't. This is a slice of paradise. I will come back.

After walking under butterflies, vines and flowers towards the common area of the property, my husband and I were met by Julia (the manager) and David (the owner) with iced tea and the ocean. This trip was amazing from the start. The staff is kind, easy to talk to, and took care of all of our needs. We asked about excursions and they were arranged. Meals were delicious and Johnny's basil margarita is one of a kind. It was nice to talk to the other guests during meals and while hanging out, and we got to know some good people from all over. We spent time every day in the ocean and did not see anyone else for miles. The turtles were an experience too - we were fortunate not only to release hundreds of baby turtles over four releases, but saw two mother turtles laying eggs as well. We spent an evening in Juluchuca for dinner and would recommend the candy factory as well. Bring your bug spray and sunscreen - use them frequently and you'll be fine. A bathing suit, shorts, flip flops, shoes for a hike, and a hat and you are set. Would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: The ecocasitas are beautiful! We had a preying mantis as an outdoor roommate during our stay. You ha...

The team at Playa Viva has done an amazing job at establishing a small, low impact paradise. Warm, friendly staff, great service, beautiful setting and a fantastic beach.

When you also consider what they do for turtle conservation and their local community, this really is "travel as it should be".

Everything you could possibly need on a relaxing vacation is here.

Room Tip: Ask for casita # 8....

I used to daydream about visiting some remote paradise while reading adventure stories like Robinson Crusoe, Richard Halliburton's adventures and Swiss Family Robinson. After 30 years of traveling to faraway places, the dream of actually experiencing something like it had almost died when, suddenly, it came true.

This small, self-contained resort is a paradise. Inside our casita, up on stilts and surrounded by views of mountains, jungle and the vast Pacific Ocean, it was hard to decide what direction to look. The views are quite literally 360 degrees. And those views are not obstructed by walls, just framed by bamboo poles and thatch above. No glass, no screens.

The casita was everything I had hoped for in a Robinson Crusoe daydream, and more. I never imagined dark wood polished floors that felt like cool glass on bare feet, or an en-suite open-air shower and bathroom with views of the jungle and ocean, or super-comfortable mattresses.

The food was fresh and excellent as was the setting for the dining room (again, no walls or windows to block the stunning views of the sea.) There are two bells before each meal. After the first bell signalling breakfast, it is possible to clamber down from your tree fort, dive into the pacific, run back up the beach, rinse off at the outdoor shower, dry off and be pouring your coffee at the breakfast table before the second bell rings. And the two bells are only five minutes apart.

The ocean here in May was very wild. Not great for swimming, but spectacular to watch, and hear.

From the ocean, however, is where the uniqueness of this place really hit me. During a swim a little way out into the waves, I looked back at the picturesque little collection of thatched roofs of Playa Viva. Out in the water, looking back at land, scanning the horizon from end to end, the view is: beach, beach, beach, Playa Viva, beach, beach, beach. It stands all alone. There is no evidence of another man-made anything anywhere in sight.

My wife and I would love to go back there soon. It also seems like it would be a good place to bring our children. There are plans to expand the resort somewhat. Based on what they have done so far, the expansion will surely be tasteful and restrained. However, we would like to go back soon, before it changes because it is perfect as it is.

Room Tip: The Homeymoon Casita is stands alone, and is the most impressive. We were glad we sprang for it.

We felt blessed to be able to spend a week at Playa Viva! What an amazing experience! A unique eco friendly and self-sustainable resort with meals so fresh!, Every meal was cooked with love from the incredibly friendly staff, with produce from their own organic garden.
Do not miss the basil margaritas by Johnny!

This place was a wonderful surprise! With 5 beach front villas and communal dining - it was a great retreat and very enjoyable to co-mingle with other guests. Just enough privacy and just enough socialization.

Being able to release some newborn turtles in to the ocean was really cool!

The cell and internet service are spotty. So, prepare to set you phone, your laptop and your watch in your luggage not be be looked at again until you get back to civilization!

It was warm even at night and the rooms are open air - so sleeping comfortably took a few nights to settle in as it was quite warm and muggy. But, the rooms have mosquito netting over the bed, so the bugs weren't an issue.

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite is the only standalone villa. The other four share are connected to each other.
