“Most spectacular ocean view in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2009

We are building a house near Ojochal, and stayed at the Lookout for about 5 nights while we were meeting with designers, etc. The location is perfect - right on the highway near the entrance to the town and very close to several beautiful, quiet beaches. The drive up is typical Costa Rica - 4 wheel drive is recommended! We've stayed in many places across CR and have never been at one with a better ocean view - even from our bed in the morning! I'm not a bird watcher, but I couldn't help noticing the toucans and scarlet macaws while eating breakfast. Steve and Carol, the owners, were looking after the place while the managers were away. They were wonderful - very friendly and good company. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome. At the end of our days we felt like we were coming home to family. The restaurant was not open while we were there, but I understood that was temporary pending the managers return and more staff to be hired. Luckily there are many nice European as well as Tico restaurants nearby - so we didn't suffer! Carol was quick to offer to make reservations for us and even ordered take-out to be delivered one rainy night when no one felt like going out. We look forward to our next visit.

The Lookout is well-named; the incredible views were the highlight of our November visit. Gorgeous sunsets over the ocean and jungle canopy. Personable hosts/owners Steve and Carol were charming and gracious. Conversation about books and travel and their help with local day trips set them apart from other places we stayed in Costa Rica. Rooms were clean, comfortable and colorful; fresh flowers and candles a welcoming touch. Only (minor) complaint was no service (dry towels) which we chalked up to an off-season glitch. We’d recommend the Lookout to our friends and definitely stay there again. Deborah and Joe, Ashland, Oregon

My husband and I recently spent a week at the Lookout in Playa Tortuga, Costa Rica. We were so excited to find out that the owners were back at the hotel after a couple years away. We had met Steve and Carol in 2002 when we stayed at the hotel and were blown away by the service we received then.
The hotel is as we remembered...beautiful tropical décor, amazing views, clean and comfortable rooms, and wonderful, attentive staff. We just love the ambience of the Lookout. Its such a peaceful place; a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We had planned on doing lots of activities, but ended up spending our days at the beach and taking the zipline tour at Hacienda Baru. The beaches were amazing - there's no beach I can think of where I've ever been the only person on the beach, but we had that experience at Playa Ventanas one day. Wow!
We spent a lot of time talking with Steve and Carol and really appreciate the experience they are trying to create for their guests. We certainly enjoyed our stay and wish them great success.

This hotel was booked for us through Adventure Life who had organised a tour for us and I have to say let them down badly as without exception all other accommodations booked by them were of a far superior quality, I guess they must have been fooled by the webpage.
The view from the Lookout is great, Kate is very nice, knowledgeable and helpful, but she wasn't there when we arrived and no one seemed to know we were arriving.
We had to ask to have our so called cleaned rooms re-cleaned. The whole place needs a major overhaul. The pool side was grubby there were only 3 loungers of which 1 was completely broken another slightly broken and the 3rd needing a good scrub!
The hotel is located up a very steep and bumpy track which in the heat is not something you wish to walk and is located too far from the beaches to walk comfortably to so you would need to hire a car to get you anywhere.
On the positive side we found Kate and the staff very friendly and helpful you did get the feeling it was a big family get together there.

My husband and I own the Lookout and had leased it to Kate and John until August of this year. I'm sorry that your stay wasn't what you expected.

We have completely renovated the property and are committed to providing our guests with clean, comfortable rooms and a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Our hotel is adult-oriented and designed to allow our guests to kick back and feel rejuvenated before returning home. We have also repaired the road to our property, which had been neglected while we were away.

We also recommend that our guests rent vehicles when visiting us as most of the attractions are not within walking distance. There's nothing worse than being stuck in a hotel when there is so much to do off the premises. We offer a full concierge service to help our guests with all their tour and transportation needs.

We stayed at The Lookout in Playa Tortuga for three nights. Kate and Jon are the owners. Kate was helpfull while we were in the US and offered to have the hotel pick us up from San Jose and drive us 4 hours to the hotel for $150. Once we arrived, we found that we were in an isolated location and really needed a rental car to get around. Kate could have told us that we should just get a rental car in San Jose instead of making the extra $150 off us by arranging the pick up in San Jose. To make matters worse, when we checked out, she wrote up the bill at $175 rather than the $150 quoted over the phone and on their web site.

Kate was not arround much when we were trying to arrange excursions, so we tried to work with Jon to arrange a dive trip to Cano Island. He kept telling us that he would help us arrange the trip but nothing would happen and we almost did not get to go diving. I suspect that Jon was not sober and probably could not remember that he had offered to help arrange our excursions. It was frustrating. By the time Kate got back, helped us reach Crocodive, we were unsure Crocodive could go out on the day we had available to dive. Without getting into all the details, we drove to Sierpe and just booked our trip directly with a dive master there. That worked out well.

When we checked out, Kate wrote up the rate at $95/night even though she quoted us $85/night.

The rooms were nice. The lobby was beautiful. The restaurant was very good but after two nights, we exausted the menu. By the way, the menu is different than the one posted on the web site. There should be more seafood dishes. The chef is Italian so there are too many pasta dishes on the menu and not enough fresh seafood. After all, the hotel is located along the beach and the web site claims that the hotel is fabulous for fishing excursions.

After meeting a nice couple staying next door at Villas Gias, we checked out of The Lookout and checked into the hotel next door. Our vacation started to fall into place once we checked out of The Lookout.

I'm sorry that you had such a negative experience at the Lookout. My husband and I are the owners of the Lookout and had leased the hotel to Kate and John when we had to return to the States for my husband's chemotherapy in 2005. Kate and John have left the business and we are now running it again with our managers, Eduardo and Denise. We have completely renovated the property and given it the TLC it had been lacking while we were away. The hotel is geared to adults who want a quiet, relaxing vacation away from the stresses of "real" life. We are dedicated to offering our guests the best service, care, and experience possible. Thanks.
