“We will be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

We had a terrific stay at Alma. We stayed at this small hotel (5 rooms) for three nights and felt like we had the place for ourselves. Service is top-notch: David, Russell and Scott were very welcoming and formidable hosts.
Breakfast was very good and the room was comfortable and clean, with a beautiful view.
The access road can be rough so it's better to call in advance and ask for their recommendation on what kind of car to bring.
Ojochal is an excellent culinary destination and with access to the main beaches of the area, a perfect combination.

We arrived to Alma without much reading and planning and we had such a wonderful surprise!
small friendly place. good people, good vibe, the room is well equipped, the bathroom is nice, very clean, with a big nice balcony.
watching the sunset from the pool is a must!
we spent 2 nights at Alma and had a great time!
we were very sorry to leave and if we had found the place earlier in the trip we would defiantly stayed longer.

Alma de Ojochal's perch above rainforest with a view to the ocean makes it a perfect setting for a Costa Rican vacation and especially those early morning cups of Costa Rican on your own private patio or balcony. Scott & Russell, Alma's owners are the best hosts you could hope for as they treat you like old friends, have great suggestions re excursions and other dining establishments in the area you should try, provide tips on the best beaches in the area and really go above and beyond to make sure your Costa Rican holiday is just what you were hoping it would be.

Breakfasts are top quality, beautifuly presented, yummy and some days even included their home grown pineapples picked on their property the day before. Russell's restaurant Azul which is located at El Castillo (managed by Scott's brother John) provides great food and an amazing atmosphere at reasonable prices topped by the best sunsets you'll find in this lovely country.

The hotel and property were recently renovated and they are kept in top notch condition by dear Christina & David the hotel's manager. The pool is just the right size and a lovely place to laze the mornings and day away and a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine while you enjoy the sunsets which are beautiful and different every evening.

If you try Alma, you will become like us, returning guests. Linda & Jim - Wilmot Centre, Ont./Can.

Room Tip: We had #4 on the lower level which we thoroughly enjoyed and while some have commented the views in...

From the beginning of our communication with the manager, David, to our reluctant departure, the staff and experience at Alma was exceptional. As a family group of six, we chose the three top rooms (there are two spacious suites on the lower floor) as we could walk to each other’s rooms via the interconnected balcony. Each balcony has its own locking door, so if you stay as a couple, you will have privacy but if you go with others, it is a lovely feature. Each of the five rooms was filled while we were there, but we never felt crowded. In fact, there was a wonderful intimate feeling to Alma. It was deliciously quiet and very beautiful.

We so enjoyed the wonderful breakfasts and talking with owner, Scott, who was especially welcoming and accommodating. He mentioned we could visit the sister hotel, El Castillo, down the hill for lunch and a swim. Our most relaxing day included a swim in the inviting pools at both places followed by yummy wraps and passion fruit pie (not to be missed) at El Castillo. What luxury (and very affordable!)

Room Tip: Both upper and lower rooms are very nice. I especially liked Room 1 as it had views from two sides...

We happened upon Alma via trip advisor and it's sister property El Castillo. Both properties are gorgeous and we could have happily stayed in either, however the king double at Alma fitted what we were looking for at a very reasonable price, and we enjoyed the whole setup so much that we ended up staying for a whole week in Alma's tranquil setting.

The decor has been tastefully chosen with a contemporary and fresh feel, and everything feels spotlessly clean thanks to the lovely Christina who also manages to keep the owners on their toes! All rooms feature balconies, the non-suites even have a small kitchenette so you can prepare your own simple dishes if you don't feel like leaving at all! Again any extras we needed, glasses, cutlery etc were not a problem when requested.

Both Scott and Russell made us feel extremely welcome and the manager David made us feel equally at home and went out of his way to help us. Even when we set off and managed to have a minor car accident immediately after checking out! However the best bit was that we were 'forced' to stay another night and had the opportunity to try out one of the suites which Scott kindly offered us as the other room wasn't available.

An added plus is of course the opportunity to pop freely to the sister property which is run by Scott's brother. You don't feel out of place in either and should you decide to spend your day at Alma, the pool, cool breeze, great jungle view and bird TV make for a very peaceful time. The sunsets were phenomenal and unique each day and Even the rainy moments were great!

They do a delicious piña colada and make sure you try at least one of Russell's Margaritas!

Breakfasts were healthy and varied, with fruit and yoghurt included as well as a hot main. Though they don't do any other meals there's usually someone on hand with cold drinks, and great advice of where to spend your next few hours or day depending on your needs. And additionally Scott and Russell have some brilliant suggestions for local restaurants offering everything from authentic fresh Indonesian food (ylang-ylang) to delicious French style cuisine (el Fuego) featuring again very fresh ingredients, and there is also some great local restaurants offering tico fare at a very good price.

I would happily recommend this lovely place to anyone looking to explore Ojochal, it's local beaches and the surrounding areas from a comfortable, luxurious and well managed property! Thank you all!

We ended up booking this place when another place we usually go was booked up; what great luck that was!! This bed and breakfast is situated up on the hill with a great view of the jungle and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Scott, Russell and David were very helpful and friendly, making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We really enjoyed our evenings in the common area with them and other guests. It is such a relaxing place and the pool was wonderful at all times of the day and into the evening, where you could watch the sun set into the ocean. They gave us great advice on the restaurants in the area and places to go. They arranged a massage with Cathy; It was the best massage that we had ever had! Thanks again to her! The rooms were very nicely appointed with nice art work, plush towels, a large bathroom with a great shower, a small fridge, counter and sink on the large balcony and a very comfortable bed. The breakfasts were very good with fresh fruit and yogurt to start and something different every morning; the coconut pancakes were my favourite! When we are in the Ojochal area again, we will definitely stay here. E&I

We had the pleasure of staying at Alma de Ojochal for 2 nights during our honeymoon in Costa Rica, and it was a breath of fresh air!

* The owners are great people, very friendly and nice and helped us with whatever we needed , from advice on restaurants in the area, to tour advice, and so on.

* The atmosphere in the place is great, everybody is happy, and it kinda sticks to you when you get there.

* The rooms are well equipped with a big comfy bed, great bathroom, quiet air conditioner and great balcony and view.

* The main pool area is a very nice place to hang out, drink and swim and watch the sunset and chat with the other guests.

I wish we would have had the opportunity to stay more - we didn't want to leave :)
