“Weekend retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Me and my wife and daughter were looking for a retreat in the middle of our trip to Portimão. The New Forest Lodge was what we've found in the internet and it was the right choice. We spend a splendid weekend in the mountain, went to the beach near by, ride horses and slep in an amazing bedroom. It was really relaxing. Fry family are very welcome and Francis cooked marvelously our last dinner there. In the end, my wife was happy, my daughter was happy and of course, if they were happy, i'm happy too.

French/German family 2 adults (riding beginners) 2 children (experienced)
#Getting there and around
- we booked 18-28 april, and took a rental car to drive from Lissabon to the NFL
-We strongly recommend a car ; since NFL is very remote and besides the horse rinding you might want to take the liberty of driving to Lagos or Aljezur, sightseeing, beach, shops, cafes
#Hospitality and food
- The Frys looked after us very well, we had delicious food from the homegrown garden and prepared with a lot of passion, variety and profession by Frances
- very children friendly atmosphere
-nice opportunity to meet the NFL family and other guests in a familial setting
#Riding/horses/other animals
-thoroughly enjoyed the horse riding (despite that we, the parents, were the beginners and our girls, 8 and 9 yrs, the pros) and carriage riding with the professional and patient teachers Manny and Milton, different tracks every day, no cars, just nature, picknick at the beach with horses
-children could help at the stables and had great liberty in riding the horses, always surveyed by Manny
-the horses are well behaved and in good condition
-the NFL is guarded by the most adorable bunch of dogs - absolutely children friendly
-Frances also offers cooking classes which we did not book, but a couple at the lodge the same time as us was very much into it, so we benefitted of really excellent dinners they prepared for everyone - and they seemed to enjoy it.
#Accomodation
- The accomodation is basic but clean - we had the Groom cottage which was sufficient for the 2 children and us, and had a very efficient wood oven as heating - sometimes needed in April. For the double bed you should not be taller than 1, 80m.
-no wifi - but Aljezur or Lagos have free internet hotspots or cafes - or you use roaming.

We can really recommend NFL and the great hospitality of the Fry family if you are looking for family friendly lovely riding trips in the nature and a relaxing quiet eco-holiday in the beautiful Algarve region

Thanks for taking the time to post a review. Its good to hear you all enjoyed your riding holiday with us. I have shown your comments on room cleaning to Milton and trust he will take note. The bed length is a problem as there is no space for a longer bed in that room. We will have to book you into the Smithy on your next visit.

'The New Forest Lodge' is a remarkable experience. The Fry family works hard with the farm they have brought back to life to give you a terrific vacation. The sturdy Andalusian horses carry you or pull you and your cart over a network of miles of country roads. Especially beautiful are the trips to the ocean; the coast must be one of the most stunning in the world. The family gardens are harvested daily, so that absolutely fresh ingredients, along with fresh fish and meat, appear at the table in a wonderful variety of combinations and preparations. If you want, you can learn to prepare these meals yourself for when you get back home. The patio, the flower gardens, and rooms all give you a feeling of harmony. No vacation is perfect for all. If it is luxury and indolence you crave, go elsewhere. For the rest of us, especially if you like horses, cooking, and adventure - you'll have a wonderful vacation.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review on Trip Advisor and for the charming water colour, which we have put in a frame and is on the wall in Groom Cottage.
We have been making great progress with the new pony Dora, she is very responsive and even the grandchildren can drive her, well Rosa can , unaided, the others need help of course. She is also proving to be a good riding pony as she is a bit lazy so very steady.
Hope all is well with you both and you are enjoying some great spring weather.

My friends and I recently returned from our second trip to The New Forest Lodge, this time for a week-long riding holiday. As before, the accommodation was welcoming, with a beautiful log fire and delicious lunch almost as soon as we arrived. Fran and David made us feel almost like family and couldn't have been better hosts.
As for the stables, Manny and Milton are fantastic, and the range of horses suited us perfectly. It was relaxing and we had a wonderful time taking in the beautiful surroundings of the woods and the beach, and an invigorating gallop or two too. There was no fuss and we certainly didn't feel any pressure to get on until we were absolutely ready, and Manny put up with (and even joined in with) our excited babbling about the local birdlife.
The food was excellent from start to finish, and the ingredients were as fresh as possible, and whenever possible straight from the garden. I feel like I've come home a stone heavier, mostly due to Fran's sumptuous cakes!
To top it all off, the price was very reasonable and included shed-loads of very drinkable wine.
I couldn't recommend this place more highly, and I know we will certainly be back next year!
Thanks very much Horses In The Sun

So often you find that you build a place up in your mind, only to find that upon your return visit that you are disappointed.

That is catagorically not the case with Horses in the Sun. Last year myself and 7 friends came for a long weekend as a Uni club reunion of sorts. We had such a great time that we decided to make the return visit longer, and so this time we came back for 5 days.

Once again the horses were superb: Fit, well mannered and friendly, the food was top notch: all local produce and veg fresh from the garden (its not often I eat a roast dinner and only get to the meat after the veg are gone) and the people are more than friendly!

We are already planning trip number 3 and as soon as we have dates it will be booked!

but under the patient and expert tutelage of Manny and (Heels-Down!) Milton and with greedy but good-natured Vanessa as my ride, in the space of a week (with a day and half off for R&R) I rather clumsily but steadily progressed from complete novice to cantering through forests and down beaches. Was I terrified? Absolutely. But do I feel smug? Hell, yes.... And that I suppose is the fab thing about the Lodge.... You want to stretch yourself at learning to ride? You can. You'd rather be in a kitchen cooking? You can (and I was very tempted to, but I can't be in two places at the same time). You'd rather just sit the sun and snooze? You can (though December may not be the best month to do that). And if you even get slightly bored there are at least 6 amiable, affectionate dogs to keep you company. I have never met a dog quite like Noodle the Poodle, and doubt I ever will again.....

What you cannot do is:
- pop out next door to the pub (nearest town Aljezur is about 20 mins drive away)
- get wifi internet
- turn down any fantastic meals Frances offers to feed you with (I chose to eat out one night and ended up missing roast pork with crackling). And make sure to leave space for the puddings, even at lunchtime!

Room Tip: One of the rooms has a fireplace in it, which I imagine is great to have on wintry December nights...
