“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2010

This is a great little place, we stayed one night while travelling through Scotland. The breakfast was great and the staff very friendly. Its right on the water's edge with no much else around so very peaceful and quiet. Very beautiful! The room we had was very comfortable, clean and well decorated.

Fabulous location 5 minutes from Eilean Donan Castle and within striking distance of Plockton and the Isle of Skye. Amazing lakeside views from our bedroom window. Our room had a private entrance, was spacious and maintained to a high standard. Highly recommended.

I arrived at Balmacara Mains Guesthouse on Saturday 10th April after having travelled 200 miles on my motorbike with my wife and luggage and was pretty tired, despite the awesome views through Glencoe.
On arrival we were met by Norman and what a gent he is.
We were given the keys to room 3, this is more like a suite, luxuriously decorated and furnished with views out onto the Loch. I asked Norman where we could eat and he recommended Plockton and offered to book a taxi for us for 7pm. At 7pm Norman appeared in his car and said that he was struggling to get a taxi but would drive us over to Plockton for dinner. On the way there Norman explained what the dinning options were and we opted for the bistro (www.plocktonshoresrestaurant.co.uk) where we had a lovely meal, good atmosphere and a warm welcome. A taxi returned us to Balmacara Mains later that night.
Breakfast in Balmacara was another experience, touched on by other reviewers and was most enjoyable and very filling with a huge choice and a broad Scottish menu. This set us up for another day on the bike touring Skye. On our return on Sunday evening I was privileged to hear Norman playing Bach on the Piano and had a shot myself. Norman is a perfect host, not at all in your face but there to recommend places to visit and places to eat to ensure that you get the most of your stay. The website ontheloch.com does not do the place justice both in terms of it’s setting or welcome.
I will be back, this is a beautiful part of Scotland and the welcome provided just adds to the attraction.

Just got married yesterday at Eilean Donan Castle and we used Balmacara Mains as our base. From the moment I contacted them with my ideas and plans for my day they swung into action. Nothing was too much trouble! My family and I took over the lodge for two days and the staff and service were faultless. Stunning rooms, stunning views and stunning food. The chef, Dede, planned my whole wedding meal for me and the food was out of this world. Such attention to detail!
Our wedding day started with Norman playing some beautiful wedding music on the piano which I could hear when I was getting ready, Helen and Gillian even decorated our bedroom with rose petals and candles!
If you're planning a small intimate wedding in the HIghlands, you will be hard pushed to find a more stunning location and service.

Stayed for two nights last week with my wife, please believe all the reviews, this is a fantastic place to stay, the surroundings were beautiful, the hotel was great, all the little finishes were done with taste, but the star of our two nights had to be Norman, and his breakfasts, what a wonderful man, he made us very welcome and is the sort of character that makes travel a great experience.
Please book without a worry, its that good.

As you will see from the photos on the web site this B&B is in a truly stunning location. We stayed for 3 nights using Balmacara as a base to visit Isle of Skye, Plockton and Ilean Donan Castle. Norman takes a personal interest in looking after you from the moment you arrive and he has a very dry sense of humour and makes you feel at home. Our room was spotlessly clean with truly excellent standard of fittings. The en suite was of the highest quality.

On the negative side, we had a room with a view of the Loch, which was outstanding, but you had to tip toe to see it. Next time, and I am sure we will return, we will book one of the other room which do have a better view.

There are some wonderful woodland walks within yards of the entrance and if you are a photographer there are numerous opportunities quite literally around every corner.

We were very impressed with the location. It was everything we hoped for and more.
