After much searching on the internet I came across The schoolhouse. I wanted somewhere central to the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, Wester Ross area and Plockton. We certainly found it here in spades!
The building is set right on the street, but across the small village road is a magnificent view and also the garden with some outdoor furniture. Here we sat in the afternoons enjoying the scenery, having some wine and nibblies. Our room was basic but very clean and had a good sized ensuite and still views across the waterway and mountains.
The kitchen was well stocked with cooking equipment, a small bar fridge, which had some eggs, milk and continental breakfast provisions were provided each morning. The owners did not intrude into our privacy so much, but were there for a quick chat at times.
Mary even did two loads of washing, hung it and it was put back folded in our room by the afternoon...no charge!
Dornie itself, is very tiny, one pub open, reasonably good meal, the other pub was under refurbishment. There is one shop, sells beer and wine and is also the post office.Opens 7.30am > 6pm Mon > Sat and 10am > 2pm Sun. It is a tidy village and the castle is in sight. I loved the area and the house next door has a lovely sun room and garden area.
Kyle of Lochalsh ( on the way to the Isle of Skye) is about 15 mins or so drive, where there is a supermarket open 8>10pm Mon to Sat and 8>6pm Sun.
Mary and her husband are still renovating their side of the house but it did not intrude into the accomodation and there were no noises while we were there.
This was a lovely interlude from the hotels and B & B's we stayed at around our Scotland holiday and gave us the opportunity to cook some of the food bought from the supermarket at reasonable prices.
I would recommend the accomodation, atmosphere of the village life and location to anyone.
