“Lovely quiet place full of history and ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2008

We stayed at the Abbey for two nights in July 2008, and we liked its personality. The sisters who own and run it were very friendly, with good English, and made us feel welcome.
It has the feel of a very large private home (if that makes sense since it is after all a former monastery) and there were none of the luxury hotel touches which always make me feel somewhat uneasy (others of course may disagree, but I dislike the "ticks in the box " facilities beloved of hotel chains).
Great views across the valley, and the front lawn, where you can sit out in a deckchair with a drink, is a great "balcony" from which you can enjoy the landscape and the fresh air.
We had Anselm's room which was very roomy and suitably monastic, apart from a nice bathroom!
Breakfasts include fresh cakes and better than usual hotel coffee.
With the decline in the pound, now a little more expensive than budgeted for, but still good value against what this buys in the UK.
The attached (incorporated) restauarant -under other management- offers pretty good food - I particularly enjoyed the fig and walnut parfait in a fennel sauce! Also a good choice of wines.

We stayed for two nights as part of an organised walking holiday and arrived, pretty tired, after a 20km walk from Spoleto along medieval paths and high passes, like a couple of pilgrims. Wonderful conversion of old monastery buildings, simple and comfortable rooms, good breakfast in the cloisters and very good restaurant with immaginative cooking, and helpful staff. Don't miss the abbey church.

This was truly a unique experience. The monastery has been beautifully made into a hotel. It is very tranquil with wonderful views. The rooms are unique and clean. A very restful place from which it is easy to take day trips in Umbria. The restaurant at the hotel was excellent also. The people there were most accomodating and helpful.

Arriving at this 14th Century form Abbey you are treat with the most awesome of views from the lawn area over the Valderrina wooded valley. Only one desolate abbey interupts the steep slopes. The lawn leads into a beautiful medieval courtyard which leads up stone steps to your room.
We took the Abbots suite which is a good price for 4*, and whilst rooms are simple they are elegant and clean. The owners and concierge are infallible. Very helpful and cheery, with no request too much. Attached to the abbey is the church which features some excellent examples of medieval art, and which is used for Italian weddings. A couple had booked the entire hotel the previous weekend.
The restaurant attached is quite daring. Nouvelle cuisine includes pigeon cutlets, hare mousse and beef cheek! Naturally I tried all three. Suprisingly the pigeon was the tastiest.
To recommend this hotel is not enough. It is a necessity to visit at least once inyour lifetime and to discover this beautiful part of Umbria! Easily the high point of our 2 week honeymoon, we hope to return in the future.
