I wouldn’t mix repro Louis XV furniture with 1990s rattan but some people like a bedroom with variety. It was a pity that the Sky TV remote control didn’t work but all the bedroom issues were eased by the enormous and astoundingly comfortable bed. It was a delight to sleep in.
Breakfast was very nice, with the added bonus of honey, fresh plums, currants and raspberries from their own garden with cream. Lovely! Jeanette was very amusing and helpful.
When checking out, we told Fred that, just as in an earlier Trip Advisor review, we had to ferry kettles of cold water to the bath because the tap didn’t work. As he took the balance of his £80 fee he offered “Sorry” and the feeblest attempt at justification but nothing more. Then we asked if we could buy some of the free-range eggs on offer. Surely, that was the moment to say “They’re on the house.” But no. “£2 please!”. To me, this said “I knew my plumbing was faulty but did not get it fixed. Too bad, sucker!”
The potentially elegant conservatory and hallway are packed with joss sticks, oriental knick-knacks and posh chocolates for sale. The dining room has a damp, musty smell and the whole establishment needs a handyman and an eye for detail. The fruit and vegetable gardens at Part Y Seal are amazing. I never thought productive agriculture could be so beautiful. With their chicken coop and their solar panels, Jeanette and Fred seem to be trying to live ‘The Good Life’. They are not quite farmers, not quite shopkeepers and not quite running a sumptuous, luxurious B&B which £80/night would command.
